  1. Well that didn't take long at all...it's deja vu all over again...Groundhog Day...same statements year after year after year...:rolleyes:

same losing year after year after year. peppers?...we don't need no stinkin peppers! frack him for not signing with the bills for the nfl minimum.

  2. Building through the draft is still to this day the BEST way to build a team, and make no mistake we are rebuilding. We have tossed big money at free agents and have **** to show for it.

I also really don't like this group of free agents. None are a must have in my book including Peppers. I am looking for Nix to do like New England does and find mid tier guys that come in, fit the systems we are running and make this a winning team.

yep, we sure wouldn't want julius peppers with all our pro bowl defensive ends...and didn't new england reportedly make a play for him. Still, I'm really concerned about rw's net worth...best not spend much on fa's.

  3. The thing is...even if they do most of the things you ask for, and of course given Buffalo's screwy state of mind the last 10 years there is no guarantee that they will do any of the things on your list.

1st) You have to look at things realistically, The new Bills head coach was just fired from the Kansas City Chiefs OC position last year for a reason. We don't really know the definitive reason for that firing, but that is not a good sign to hire a guy for a position elevated above a position he was just fired from.

2nd) Chan Gailey hired a bunch of college coaches... even Buddy Nix stated there is a huge learning curve going from college to the pros, at any level. Understanding that it might take them a good 3 years to become good at the position there were hired for, which they may or may not accomplish. The NFL is not a very forgiving league.

3rd) The team is about to try and drastically change both offensive and defensive schemes, going from the Mike Martz offense to a Chan Gailey "pistol" and 4-3 tampa 2 to a 3-4, every player at every position on the team is going to need to go through a learning process. And oh yea...who is teaching them all these new things they need to learn??

4th) The offensive line is in shambles the Bills need two starters at tackle, both left and right tackle. There is a reason Jason Peters in Philly got paid 3x as much money as Trent Edwards gets, Peters is labeled a "franchise" left tackle and Trent Edwards ...

Ralph Wilson just blew up the entire team and is putting it all in the hands of a guy that was just fired Last season as offensive coordinator...

My Take: this team will be competing for the #1 overall draft pick next year, so the team should grab a left tackle with that #9 this year and get the franchise QB next year

Marty Schottenheimer wanted the Job as HC, the Bills wanted to hire Marty's son Brian to be the head coach... and he turned it down.

It stands to reason if the Bills had hired Marty for the HC job, he would have hired his son Brian away from the Jets and trained and groomed him for the head coaching job in a few years. What idiot in the background runs this team... Al Davis?

    Right on all counts

  4. birdog - ease up. I'm sorry you had a bad experience. I have substantial knowledge about tire technology - it goes beyond TireRack info and proceeds to things like slip angle, rubber hysteresis, compounding, tribology, and a whole bunch of other stuff.

I'm not a lay person - I know the business and the technology. I worked in Process Engineering and Materials, and corrosion control. I fought battles with the money people and stylists over tires. Some tread designs pick up the little road stones, then over time fling them onto and into the fenders and rocker boxes that I worked to protect. The battle of engineers vs. stylists re wide tires and lousy compounding and tread design continues today.

The OP asked for help from our membership, and said that replacement tires and the choices out there was not within his ken. Fair questions. I responded, as did others. He mentioned the area where he lived. His vehicle, its' age. I made a recommendation, and mentioned TireRack as a useful source of information, as well as price. Several other poster also spoke well of that business.

Were Virgil living in Alabama, or lives in Minnesota, I might have made different recommendations.

    We must not fight.

not fighting. I honestly think there are reasons to avoid Chinese tires (actually there are at least 450,000 reasons as that's the number of the biggest recall) especially house brands and I think the op should be aware of this before making a choice. But I am more than a little irked at tire rack for selling chinese house brand tires that their vp of marketing states (in the msnbc article that I cited) he wouldn't want on a car traveling behind him. I find this topic interesting outside my own experience as well as it involves protectionism, tariffs, unions (Steel workers represent US tire workers and us regulatory agencies-NHSTA). So, as someone with insight into the industry how do you feel about Chinese tires safety in general or branded vs nonbranded? (btw, the nonbranded tires origin is often not disclosed by dealers) There's a chance your Kumho's came from there as they have a plant there. In my opinion it may well be that the branded Chinese made tires are as good as those made anywhere (especially Michelin, given their reported excellent quality control) but why take a chance?
  5. Are you inferring all Chinese made tires are bad, based on this comment?

    Just curious.

check out msnbc.com/id/32899266/ns/business-autos/page/2/ "With Chinese tires, It's buyer beware" or just google chinese tires, theres a nyt article on recalls as well ( I can't get this board to accept links- obviously I'm link challenged but you can get there easily enough) It's controversial but I think it best to avoid tires made in china altogether. and certainly the off brand ones.

  6. Well, they published my severely critical review of the Kumho Solus KH16...

I posted 4-5 emails for the review page on the Avon Tyres (I remember the name now- avon tech m550 ultra high performance, w speed rated)) with the story of the sidewall blowout-none published. when I inquired, they stated that they reserve the right to post which ever reviews they choose. Eventually, I saw an article on yahoo finance quoting their ceo on not allowing his family to ride in a car with cheap chinese made tires. I emailed him directly thanking him for allowing me and my family to do just that. Avons are no longer carried at tire rack although I'll bet there are some chinese made major branded tires available there still.

  7. Agree 100%. I have bought tires from there a few times. You can't beat the prices. They can also make recommendations as to which tires are right for the vehicle you want them for.

Don't trust tire rack's surveys and comments on their web site.. They don't publish severely negative reviews. They used to sell a "house brand" tire that I've forgotten the name of that was highly rated on the site. I bought them (very low profile v rated) and had a sidewall blowout at 10000 miles on the highway doing 70. They were about 150 each, brand name would've cost about $220. They wouldn't publish my review but have recently removed the brand. There are a lot of inferior, cheap chinese made tires out there that are unsafe. I will never again buy cheap tires and recommend against it to everyone. Stick with the big names like michelin, goodyear, bridgestone etc. Not a guarantee but your odds are better. I have goodyear eagles on 1 car and bridgestone potenzas on the other and their both worth the extra money.

  8. Someone posted this link a year or two ago. It's a good read the 2nd time around too.

I posted it about a month ago with reference to rw's statement that "buffalonians will support a loser as well as any city" and the only response was that I really hold a grudge since I cited a 1969 article. No one admitted to reading the article. It seems context dictates interest on the stadium wall.

  9. Well.. if people like you would let people like me get a public health care option, maybe I would get to retire at 55..

try to give this statement a little more thought...if those who have done well and could retire early except for the incredibly high cost of individual health insurance, did indeed retire, there would be many more open jobs to decrease the unemployment rolls. This group isn't looking for a handout but a reasonably priced policy to buy. Unfortuanetly private insurers have no incentive to offer such plans. I know many people in this situation. Aside from this argument, small businesses (like mine) are quickly reaching the point where employer provided medical insurance is no longer feasible. When a significant percentage of us get there, the public will be begging for public health care. Profit and medicine mix very poorly. If you don't agree, take a look at the rapidly growing concierge medicine movement. The implications for access to care are very scary.

  10. Ralph owes us? Really?

NEWS FLASH - the Bills franchise is a commodity that is PRIVATELY OWNED. Ralph owes us NOTHING.

let me make an analogy that counters your argument:

A woman finishes top medical training with the idealistic notion of starting a rural practice. She establishes said privately owned business in an area with few other doctors. She almost immediately has patients knocking down her door to see her and has offers from much larger communities offering better pay and hours. She chooses to stay where she believes she's most needed but with the great demand, she could easily "phone it in" and not keep up to date on new developments or go to long, tiring medical meetings or maintain long hours. The patients would still come. She would still make a good living. She believes she owes it to her patients to provide them the best care she can. After 50 years, she realizes that her skills have faded and she recruits her replacement who takes over a very successful practice. She retires a local hero. Ralph would probably think her stupid and naive.

  11. Buffalo would not have a team if not for Ralph Wilson in 1959. Does he always spend money wisely on players? No. Does he always hire the best management or coaches? No. Has he always stood up for small market teams? Yes. Has he kept the team in Buffalo even through the worst economic times Buffalo has experienced not just this current time? Yes. Yes, he has made a profit over the years from the fans filling the stadium and even for the deal to play a couple games in Toronto. He's a businessman. But he didn't slink out of town like Ersay, or move to from one city and then back like Davis.
So, relative to those ass####s, he's a great man, right? Uh, ok, I'll buy that.
  12. 1969????? You sure know how to carry a grudge.

    PTR

that makes it all the more salient. "Wilson's not dilattentish in sports. His afl team is a profitable enterprise and he means to keep it that way even if it means moving to the Yukon". Wilson was threatening the area with moving even then, after a 1-13 season, and holding the fans and the city hostage despite their filling the stadium for a miserable team. It illustrates that his mo has remained constant over 50 years and dispels much of the revisionist history spouted so often here.

  13. At least Snyder apologized over and over again for losing. Ralph blames it on the market and the inability to compete with big markets. I llive in DC too so I get what your saying, but there is a difference between an owner who tries every season to put a winning team on the field but fails because he doesn't know football (Snyder), and an owner who uses shortcuts and gimmicks to fill his stadium while continuously putting out a crap product with no signs of improvement(Ralph).

this, ralph publicly stated years ago that Buffalo will support a loser and he's played that angle to the max.

  14. Finally, someone said it.

I looked through 8 pages of this thread to see if anyone said the most obvious answer to the question.

That little ol' band from Texas seems like the obvious choice for the first Superbowl in the new Dallas stadium.

They're commercial as all hell, and certainly fit the bill for having wide appeal and putting on a rocking show for the masses.

That said, they're another one of those bands whose best recorded work was albums 1 and maybe 2, and after that they sold out. Laughing all the way to the bank.

Another classic Texan - Steve Miller.

Fogarty would have the same marketing appeal as all the recent acts. Lots of well known classic hits and fun party songs everyone knows the words to. Eagles - same thing.

Dixie Chicks are from Texas..maybe a little wide left for ole jerry and the NFL though.

  15. Pretty sure you're tone deaf, if you really believe that. Very few of 'those kind' have more than a 3 note range and most sing flat.

Then there's that hideous twang thang..

Yeah, it's been watered down a little lately with manufactured acts but there are still many great artists in the genre. Go see a grand ole opry show at the ryman theater some day and see what you think. Go when there's some bluegrass acts as well (like Del McCroury) and then tell me the players aren't talented and the vocalists don't have range. There are multiple entire disciplines of stringed instrument techniques discovered and mastered by country musicians (see Merle Travis) and borrowed and adapted by many other genres. Broaden your horizon a little...and it's as American as apple pie and the NFL. And, millbank, BB King with Eric Clapton would be awesome.

  16. Agree on Bon Jovi. Seems like the next safe superstar act the NFL can hire. Plus Jon Bon Jovi owned an Arena team (Philly Soul) and let it be know he wants to buy a piece of an NFL team.

    AC/DC, another solid choice.

    Black-Eyed Peas, great modern choice.

The Eagles, another classic rock/country superstar band.

    Taylor Swift anyone?

    PTR

Only if she used an autotune...got to be the least talented grammy winning singer in recent history...would be much worse than the Who
  17. Let me say I thought the Who were quite good...considering they are pushing 70! My wife who grew up a huge Who fan was aghast at how old Daltrey and Townshend looked. And frankly Daltrey had to tone it down just to keep his voice from giving out.

It made me think about why the NFL keeps dredging up these fossil bands? I mean the median age of a Who fan is probably 55. The median age of an NFL fan is much younger. So where does the NFL go next year? What 60's rock bands are left? Any other ideas from other decades?

If I were to predict I think the NFL will chose a country artist for SBXLV.

    PTR

Emmit and jerry doing a tango exhibiton...but seriously if it were country, maybe Brad Paisley. How bout blues with BB King or maybe U2 or Dave Matthews-would have pretty broad appeal
