  1. i'm not sure which party has the highest incidence of genital warts but this issue is really becoming a problem for perry. of course, i agree with mandatory hpv immunization just as i do for other common, serious infectious diseases. seems like a rather obscure reason to vote or not vote for a presidential candidate, however.
  2. hadn't heard about it til now but made me look. don't see the gay thing here. i actually have a cabella's knock off pair of uggs so maybe i'm biased. didn't several olympic teams wear uggs in the most recent winter olympics? i think the urban link is kind of strange tho...more appropriately linked with ski towns to me. come to think off it, would be appropriate for buffalo but based on brady as spokesman and on this thread i don't think the marketing is aimed there.
  3. maybe you haven't seen as many losses over 45 years as i have..we each have our own threshold for futility. lets see...sailing with 6 knot winds on a 78 degree clear, fall day and little boat traffic or watching a team that most, albeit incorrectly, picked as one of the weakest teams in the league...hmmm, tough one. i'm glad most people were wrong sunday but i'm also not crying that i missed one game that i can see replayed. i wouldn't have skipped my wifes birthday party for it either. we all value things differently.
  4. i recommend zager guitars. he lowers the action with low frets and a lowered bridge and nut, uses extra light strings and spaces the strings more widely on a relatively low end asian guitar. the result is really easy to play and easy on the fingers without going to nylon strings. i asked a local luthier to set up my martin like it and he wasn't sure he could without causing buzzing. new, they're only available online. used they command close to new price so you're probably better off buying new. they have a money back guarantee for 1 month, i believe. no questions asked. an alternative idea, if you aren't sure about diving in fully is to buy a uke. for $30 you can get a playable uke with easy to fret nylon strings and much simpler chords due to it's 4 strings. we had 2 teenagers stay with us over the summer for 6 weeks. at the end, they could both strum about 6 songs with the help of a dvd/instruction book. very little drama/frustration. if you have trouble with the uke (and i doubt you will), i'd avoid the guitar.
  5. i was ecstatic to come home and see the score (decided to go to the lake on a beautiful day fully expecting disappointment). i'm glad to hear "told you so" although disappointed it could be said by the pessimistic side, including me, so many more times in the past.
  6. for the cost of good tickets, parking and a few beers i'd trade the raceday experience for an actual racing experience. richard petty owns a traveling operation where you can drive actual nascar cars on the tracks. i did it at bristol with a bunch of other guys. had a pool for fastest lap (which unfortunately, i didn't win). i think my fastest lap was about 105mph. there is a pace car in front of you and he won't let you go all out unless he's confident you can handle it. there was also a car taking riders but driven by a pro on the track at the same time. he was going significantly faster i remember that day in much greater detail than any race i ever went to. pretty sure they do it in charlotte and a couple other tracks as well.
  7. 2 tips: stay away from guys like this and be very careful walking back to your car and driving home. there are probably more drunk drivers than sober ones. me, i just stopped going.
  8. selling 136 shares DFVIX @ 14.55= $1978.8 cash available = $2007.85
  9. potential developments for sunday ticket online. sounds promising...we'll have to wait and see. i especially like the per weekend pay option.
  10. there's a thread on this from last year. some folks were disappointed in the quality of the streaming and some were refused, getting only the internet feed if they couldn't access full direct tv service, as i recall. i bit the bullet and signed up for full service again after about a 5 year absence. $42.99 per month for 1st year with 2 receivers (1 is hddvr), hd service, dvr service, 3 months of premium channels, 1 year free sunday ticket, st to go, and free installation. 2nd year without premium channels is $74 per month and will have to haggle for sunday ticket price. got a bit of a discount going through verizon/century link. works out significantly cheaper than i was paying for cable with significant added services including sunday ticket and reportedly better hardware (better dvr) than cable. i don't think it makes much sense to get only "to go" product at this price as total cost is about $500 for 1st year for full service and i think its $300+ for stand alone "to go". of course, you are obligated to a two year contract.
  11. selling 136 shares DFIVX - price to be determined at closing today.
  12. volatility much? ANR up over 10% today but now just a little more than when i bought. will watch tomorrow to see if the time seems right for a move into more stability in ETF's for indonesia and chile. it makes me shudder to think that these are becoming havens.
  13. i have apple tv and am pretty happy with it. might be buying another similar device for another room. are there advantages to roku over apple tv?
  14. 1st post since april and it's to attack a writer who reported an event that could only reasonably be expected to anger one bills drive. it doesn't take much imagination to hypothesize a motive.
  15. buying 136 shares of DFIVX @ $16.32 117.2 shares DFLVX @ $18.94 97.1 shares DFREX @ $22.87 cash = $29.05
  16. buying ANR 100 shares at $33.11 cash= $6689 will invest $2220 each into funds DFIVX, DFREX and DFLVX at price at todays closing.
  17. just do it. wada ya got to lose? and conventianal wisdom says funds outperfom stock pickers by a big margin as a rule. it might be informative to see that comparison in action.
  18. you don't need the other format. i think it would be helpful to restate your holdings at the end of the transaction however. if you don't want to after every transaction then update it once a week. ideally we'll all keep each other straight, especially if you're the one leading. there's nothing on the line here except the fun of it. the more players the better. if it's not fun, we'll stop.
  19. always loved the bread at dicamillo's in niagara falls (and still order it occasionally for parties). very good pastries too. very interested in the news about carlo's - was it bad or just mediocre?
  20. if you subscribe to a real time ticker and want to use that as an advantage, go for it. if we see another flash crash or real crash then were all at a loss and none of us will be very worried about our fictional portfolios.
  21. no transaction fee. no options. buying and selling at price given on ticker (eg yahoo finance, google finance, msn money etc at time you decide to trade. and it's on the honor system. i trust you're honorable, right?
  22. Rules: 1. you have $10,000 to invest in any stock traded in the USA. that includes ETF's and index funds. (I'm not including pinks and OTC's cuz i don't know how they work) 2. unlimited buying and selling but all trading must take place when the NYSE is open. mutual fund trading will reflect the funds price at closing for the day of the trade (just like in real life). 3.you must record the buy/sell price at the time of transaction except for mutual funds for which the price will be determined at day's closing. 4. every buy and sell should be a reply from your last buy/sell so you can keep a running total. 5. the honor system is in effect. 6. you may make your first transactions on sept 1. 7. you can start anytime between sept 1 and oct 1 8. you can use whatever form you desire for posting trades as long as it includes the number and value of shares bought and sold, is unambiguous and the post includes an updated summary of all holdings, including cash at the end of the transaction. 9.game will end at close of trading 3/1/12. rules are adapted from peace (thanks, peace) with a few changes. if you have any suggestions on changes to rules, please post them before Sept 1.
