  1. he was called out for being anti war on his return. that stance is often very expensive, even if you're right, just ask the dixie chicks. the guy was in combat. how many recent presidential candidates can say that.
  2. i was pulling for howard dean in that one. probably more analogous to ron paul than bachman.
  3. just pointing out that criticizing kerry for his military record (which was an unimaginably successful campaign tactic) is rather rich when there are so many chicken hawk republicans thast are so much more worthy..
  4. too late..will never get those 3 minutes back. or those 2 minutes. to each, his own... this looked pretty interesting in a bizarre sort of way.
  5. will check this out also. never heard of Starblazers but will have to take a look. i don't know why i seem to like the british tv series more often than us series (maybe because they're often actually aimed at adults?). need something to replace "downton abbey" which finished its season last night.
  6. do you really think romney would name gingrich secretary of state or vice versa?
  7. 2 others to share: Outsourced- indy flick set in mumbai about a seattle transplant learning his way around. way better than tv takeoff series. Queen to Play - a maid becomes a chess star
  8. i've been pretty disappointed in "recommended for you" picks. the lesser known things i've watched and liked were mostly found by trial and error. any sleeper movies, series that you would recommend? i'll start with one of each i've found recently: "cashback": a british flick about freezing time "doc martin": a british series set in cornwall about a grumpy surgeon who develops a blood phobia and becomes a gp. feel free to include sleepers from other sites such as amazon prime and in any genre.
  9. i'm against this mandate and for protection of conscience. i assumed that would be understood by including the link.
  10. i did. individual conscience regarding religious issues and separartion of church and state are tightly intertwined in this issue. the inclusion of one in the argument doesn't exclude the othewr. can't help it if you can't see that.
  11. seems yall are missing the bigger issue in this debate: conscience. the foudiing fathers appreciated the need for it's protection. it seems some of you are selective as to which founding principles you deem worthy of protection.
  12. heard these guys interviewed on the radio the other day. too bad the grammys don't have a classical/disco category. i think they should be recognized for the addition of the milk frother to the genre.
  13. don't know what happened to buftex post with examples of unecessary govt interference from the other side but they're easy to find. many wrongs don't make a right. lunchbox inspection is just stupid but the effort to provide better cafeteria food seems to me a no brainer.
  14. yup...elton john and bernie taupin were big "the band" fans and named that song after helm.
  15. i was thinking 51 is the new 42 but i'm a little delusional. anybody notice levon helm won best americana record for "rumble at the ryman" recorded in 2008! i've heard some pretty damn good americana in the last 4 years but i'm sure helms is deserving.
  16. that and she might be a little worried about another hemorrhagic laryngeal polyp. i would be. she's not everyones cup of tea and thats always the case with music. that's fine. i'm impressed that almost no one attacks her as a person. that's pretty rare in someone with so much success so young. i've listened to her since my mother in law brought us "19" from england before she was really well known here. listened to the cd multiple times the first week and i liked it more and more. i still like it more than "21". while it's probably, on average, an older crowd that listens to her, the number of overall sales would suggest many young listeners, too. but i wouldn't be surprised if she gets back to showing off her talent sooner than she now expects.
  17. some who study entrepreneurship disagree with your interpretation of thiel's theme. his huge recent losses cited in this article also underscore the fact that he doesn't have all the answers and his crystal ball may be getting a little cloudy.
  18. from the comments: " theil just gave a lecture at harvard that advised it's students to drop out and start a business .because, you know, he and a few other zillionaires were successful at it. not sure i trust his judgement". someone else pointed out that kennedy would indeed have had a difficult time dealing with healthcare in the late 60's cuz, um, he was dead.
  19. last week npr had a run up series to the grammys. the reporter stated that the difference between best song and best record was, as GG said, the song is judged on the sheet music while tyhe record is judged on the production as a whole- orchestration, engineering, vocals etc.
  20. random thoughts after watching the tivo: has joe walsh found the fountain of youth? the antidote to drug abuse? beach boys were better than i thought they'd be but that's not a huge compliment gotta check out "civil wars" stuff...wish they did a whole track and taylor swift did a snippet didn't she do "mean" on the grammys last year? blake shelton's version was better than glen campbell's original overall the show was more entertaining than the first 45 mins suggested.
  21. just watched adele's performance on tivo. you're absolutely correct. the reactions were priceless. the more fluff, the more intimidation and vice versa. not generally a fan of bruno mars but he did one of the better performances that i've seen from last night. and while probably considered sacrilege, i didn't think much of the first act. as bruces go, i frankly prefer hornsby. morbid curiosity is pushing me to tee up the beach boys number next.
