  1. farm subsidies are antithetical to libertarianism but so are most practical applications of the ideology. many farmers, especially small farmers treat their animals humanely, realizing of course, that they are raising a food source. small farmers and supporters of sustainable agriculture have a more consistent champion in dems than repubs. growing food to feed machines is stupid and both parties are to blame for this travesty. a well written book on the subjects of small farming and the many problems of agribusiness that might be particularly interesting to jboys: http://www.amazon.com/Animal-Vegetable-Miracle-Year-Food/dp/0060852569
  2. a good friend with a long career in law enforcement made this point to me recently: http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2012/12/21/columbine_armed_guard_colorado_shooting_shows_that_nra_s_shield_program.html. the nra is f.o.s.
  3. this is such bs.. much of the "spending with the boys" was the result of 2 neocon propagated wars. yet the cartoonist presumably finds social programs like those that would protect those 2 babies, extravagant. it boils down to the same philosophy that foils gun control: "if all else fails, i can take what i want with force." that's a very expensive philosophy.
  4. well first off i don't do either of those things but if i did, my spending would have little effect on the economy as a whole. and i would curb it immediately. the gov't does that and a couple whole generations are likely to be much poorer over night. this needs to be done gradually. starting with increased revenues on the richest makes the most sense.
  5. wow, that's quite a conspiracy theory. must admit the tea party dudes are really playing their roles amazingly. academy award stuff. howard dean is probably one of the few dems who might want this and even he has reservations. do some think going over is preferable to the status quo? yup. i'm sure some repubs do too. but most think a compromise would be the best solution with gradually increasing taxes and decreasing entitlements and defense spending. sudden will be very bad and won't likely last long despite the intransigents on both sides.
  6. one of the few truth speakers around: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2012/12/21/howard_dean_belief_that_taxing_incomes_over_250000_more_will_solve_deficit_problem_just_not_so.html
  7. hopefully those many (minus a few defectors that see reason) won't be enough.
  8. ..."theres nothing like visible turmoil to get our bickering politicians to work together"...this is how I see it playing out. they won't act responsibly til forced but ya never know, maybe they'll surprise us all. if not, which party's agendas have the most chance of passing at that moment?
  9. try this link instead http://www.moneynews.com/StreetTalk/Pimco-El-Erian-cliff-recession/2012/12/21/id/468732

  11. anyone not seeing this as a big loss for the repugnants is delusional. a majority party that can't govern won't remain in the majority long, to paraphrase a republican congressman today. the recent polls support this unfortunately, the country loses as there really is no republican leader to even attempt to negotiate the important national issues with. mark shields said on pbs that it's similar to the problem of finding consensus in europe even though we have only one county to deal with here in negotiations. sounds about right to me. we really don't have time for the repugs to figure out who they really want to be, who their leader is and what they stand for.
  12. thanks. gonna make a pandora station of them and have a listen.
  13. probably the wrong word for mumford...love em also. how bout they're british and play americana.
  14. avett's are probably the best known example. i'd say mumford but they're british usurpers.
  15. i think maybe you're looking at the 12 chevy vs the 12 ford link there. different race. on the vid you never see the mustang. .8 secs in the quarter mile is a lot of space. did you notice he never got out of 3rd? must have been going around 100 at the line in 3rd...
  16. 100 miles of wreckage, the black lillies. Christmas present for my wife. if you like americana have a listen.
  17. the guy driving the viper is 38. the kids that were hit were in a crv.
  18. yup. http://www.greenevillesun.com/Local_News/article/Second-Johnson-City-Man-Charged-With-Drag-Racing-After-Fiery-Fatal-Collision%0D-id-272097
  19. racing on a pulic street is stupid and can be muderous. wanna race? take a road trip some weekend to here and bring a helmet: http://www.dragtimes...3x0GZFc . they charge less than 10 bucks a race. and notice which americn brand won here.
  20. this has been posted multiple times here but i don't think it can be posted too many. wilson's public cynicism in that article should make anyone ever associated with western new york furious. he admits that part of his business plan for the bills includes the fact that buffalo fans will support a loser. talk about exploitation! he was playing the fans back then and has done it most of his tenure. and he's been extremely successful financially with this plan. why would any bills fan respect him? excellent post.
  21. yup. i lost some paint on a parking lot curb on my front bumper. doesn't seem loose though. never considered it might be that way for mileage reasons but that makes sense. it's low and barely noticeable but i'll be going to advance auto parts for some paint when it warms up. for what it's worth, i get 33 mpg highway in a 300+ hp car. they seem to know how to wring out the mileage.
  22. i'm wondering if you looked at the gs. it's an entirely different animal. the interior is very similar to many other euro sport sedans (not quite an audi but every bit as nice as a 3 series bmw which i find pretty uninspired) - baseball stitching, piano black dash, dials that are either backlit red or blue depending on the suspension setting you pick and the gs suspension setting is tight. the caddys are damn nice, too. we drove the 2 door cts with the vette engine cuz it comes in a std and awd - unfortunately (surprise!) they only had the auto, rwd on the lot. felt a bit unbalanced to me. just too much torque and for me to say that means a lot of torque. in awd and std tranny it might behave very differently. anyway, i think gm is making some very good cars now. these opel platforms are really nice and the chassis are truly great. now if opel and citroen/peugot merge as rumored there may be some even more interesting gm cars coming out.
  23. for all you GM haters, check this out: http://www.insideline.com/buick/regal/2012/2012-buick-regal-gs-hits-162-mph-in-open-road-challenge.html. not your grandaddy's buick!
  24. elantra gt is based on their euro model the I30. meant to compete against other sport "hot" hatches like the golf, focus and mazda 3. we drove it and liked it. liked the variable suspension and it comes in leather with a 6 speed - as i said earlier this is rare. the car companies seem to think if you want a manual, you want inexpensive and stripped. humongous sun roof - it's reallly almost like a convertible. it's a bit slow off the start though. not gonna knock your head against the seat but if that doesn't matter to you i think it's a good deal. the best car in this segment, imo, is the focus st - it screams and has actual recaro racing seats. but there relatively hard to find (what is it with the companies not making enough to supply demand?). my business partner ordered one - supposed to take about 2 months.
  25. there are rarely good deals on used subaru's because they hold their value so well. i'd recommend a new impreza hatch which may well be not far from the cost of the vehicles you are looking at. if you go, test drive a wrx just for fun...
