  1. yup. "an eye for an eye" seems to still be the prevailing attitude there. it's barbaric. unfortunately, it's not going away anytime soon.
  2. a proxy war involving each sides teenagers: a real life "hunger games. this is an ancient, brutal, unevolved and uncivilized region of the world. among the worst. the palestinians can at least claim desperation. the israeli's have made it so. what is the israeli's excuse?
  3. i really like it. wife thinks it's nihlistic and she's right but i think it's compelling. was expecting something more like what i've heard about "left behind". not read that but i'm guessing this is pretty dissimilar.
  4. i wouldn't have any objection to a Christian bookstore doing that anymore than i feel guilty about refusing to have dr oz shite marketing pieces in my waiting room
  5. wish there were a costco near me. seems a very responsible corporate citzen. censorship? give me a break. is hobby lobby engaging in censorship because they don't sell pornoigraphic magazines?
  6. i've been intrigued with her story and music since i heard this. love her voice. seems she become very popular in europe posthumously. seems not so much in the US. This show gives a fairly succinct history as well as an interesting duet (even if a bit morbid):
  7. just saw this: http://www.sonyclassics.com/timsvermeer/. yup, it's a documentary but it's amazing for the main character's genius and for the story on its own.
  8. apple radio turned this up for me yesterday. quite an amazing story about this artist. this was her last performance. she died from metastatic malignant melanoma a few weeks later. and she chose this to end her set: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEBBGSgO16M
  9. he's brilliant. some of my favorite bits so far: FIFA, Dr Oz, Assad put down http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lKYPp2Kp6s and the bit about dingos. the best flattery is when those you poke fun at quote you back in their arenas. that's just what's happening.
  10. 2 or 3 chord monotone songs with da dum da dum tempo are not very good. so i'm standing by it.
  11. demanding much? but i'll oblige:more than a feeling don't look back peace of mind spirit of the radio closer to the heart roll with the changes say you love me or say goodnight keep on lovin you and anything by america but especially horse with no name
  12. but with few exceptions, it's the same songs from a particular band that get airplay. and it's not a function of how long the songs have been out. it's how often it's been played in a set time frame.
  13. anything by boston, rush (yes, i know they have talent but enough already), reo speedwagon and anything by america (don't know why they got airplay in the first place).
  14. a nice follow up piece about bob dylan's collaboration: http://www.npr.org/2014/07/01/326959136/on-remedy-old-crow-medicine-show-gets-a-favor-from-bob-dylan
  15. it's pretty common for people to drop off perfectly great herding dogs because they didn't understand that they were bred to be high energy and not sit inside or in a cage all day. then they don't understand why they become destructive. would seem a fine match for a farmer.
  16. couldn't agree more. yesterday is saw 2 dogs roaming in a gas station parking lot that almost certainly had been dumped. i'm not in a position to take 2 more right now as we have two old dogs already and they're getting frail and weak and it wouldn't be fair to them. but consider what a great life your dog had in comparison and how great a life you could give another dog or two. all of our dogs have been rescues. i swear, they all knew they were saved and we're enormously appreciative loyal and loving in return. it's a great deal all around.
  17. Contact is one of my favorite movies. watched it many times.
  18. flesh gordon. i think it was r rated and pretty racy at the time. saw it at a niagara falls drive-in. surely mild by todays standards but still very funny. http://www.totalfilm.com/features/50-best-movie-spoof-moments
  19. it's very different. people cheer for teams out of regional affiliation mostly. sometimes nostalgia (which is true for me in the case of the bills). rarely out of true self interest (unless they or a family member plays on a team). people often vote out of self interest. except when they don't which is a significant minority of the time but still important. and i think it happens in both conservative and liberal voters but in general i think it's fair to say that most conservative voters vote for candidates that will generally advance their interests or art least they think that they will. i think a higher percentage of liberal voters don't. no, i can't prove either statement. they're based on observation alone.
  20. my point was that envy is frequently invoked here as the motivation behind liberal positions.
  21. thanks. amazed that stocks haven't got creamed the last 2 days. something smells bad for this perma rally.
  22. whatever happened to the politics of envy or lack thereof?
  23. i have friends on my fb page that are more conservative than you (albeit more polite). i just ignore most of their political posts and they seem to ignore mine. none of us post them very much. it's more fun and effective at keeping frineds, scrapping with complete strangers here. i can certainly see where asheville and you weren't a good fit. it'd be like me living in the buckle of the bible belt...oh, wait..
  24. no. i never said or implied that. the duke lacrosse case was bad shouldn't have happened. shouldn't happen again. the death penalty applied to the innocent is bad. should never happen. one case is rectifiable. the other isn't. the selective lack of outrage for the latter is remarkable. that's all. that's enough.
