Traded not dumped. Nice try. Not to mention Phillip Rivers, their golden boy, was ready. He's a pretty damn good QB himself. He should have never been drafted while they had Brees but he was on the roster. Go back and check the threads. I threw out a number and said it was a bad risk. Just my opinion but at least I took a stand and tried to back it up.

Another telling clue I tried to mention was the fact that San Diego released him. QUESTION: What team dumps a SUPERSTAR that is recovering from a manageable injury who will likely return to something at least slightly resembling his former probowl form? ANSWER: Nobody! It was clear as day. Give it a rest Robo-tripper. You know nobody said Maybin was a probowler. All I will say is 3 sacks and 3 forced fumbles in how many games? Here is another interesting fact for you....Maybin and Merriman have the same number of probowls in the last 3 years

I know I can be a real d*ck sometimes trying to drive a point home but I'm as disappointed and upset as everyone else. Part of being a fan, which we all are and sometimes forget, is hoping when there is no factual reason to hope. I hoped for the best but was prepared for the likely future.

What does Kelvin Sheppard at ILB have to do with losing Merriman at OLB?
-
Or maybe Merriman is just broken like some of us said and hasn't done jack since his rash of injuries and steroid suspensions.
-
Can we revive the me against the world thread about Merriman not having done anything since getting off the juice and beginning his string of injuries 3 plus year ago??? Everyone tried to blast me up and down about how it was a "good risk" to sign him for a few million. I of course argued that that money could be used to sign a difference maker. Sometimes the difference between a pro bowler and a lunch pail veteran is only a couple million. Nobody could even come close to qualifying much less quantifying the risk but judged it to be a good one. I don't know about you but if I walk into a casino and I don't know the odds of the game...I'm not playing it and I SURE as hell would not say it was good risk. That is just a dumb uninformed decision. I hoped this guy would prove me wrong. I would have been happy if he could have been 75% as successful as he used to be statistically. My heart wanted to believe he could become a valuable contributor but my head told me he was done. Not just done in Buffalo, but done for good. His body is broken beaten and scarred. I feel really bad for the guy and worse for this team. It leaves an enormous hole AFTER THE TRADE DEADLINE and getting rid of Maybin. At this point I don't think he will ever be anything more than an IR spot waiting to happen.

Maybin has 0.5 less sacks than our entire team

WTF??? 3 forced fumbles as well? Good thing we never gave this guy a shot on the field. Fitz, as have others, has shown us that mediocre practice guys can be good gamers. Now I am doubly pissed at Maybin but also annoyed that we didn't give him time in game situations just in case. We gave Trent Edwards, a 3rd round QB, 4 years to prove he sucked. We couldn't give Maybin 6 - 8 games?!?!!? I'm sorry to all of the reverse apologists that are trying to nit pick and down play his 3 sacks but 3 forced fumbles on top of that? Come on guys. The guy is playing some freakin' football now. This may be a quick flash in the pan but if he can sustain it....another lost opportunity for the Bills. -

I would rather see our corners try to cover man for 4 seconds than watch them break down playing zone after 6 seconds. Of course this is all predicated on additional bodies or scheming being able to speed up the rather slow running clock in our opposing QBs heads. We are 31st in the league in defense. One thing that we can say definitely is that what we are doing is not working. Unless we go back in time and change personnel the only thing we can do is modify the scheme. -

Silly supposition that it would have come down to Maybin or Florence. I tell you who would disagree with you about sacks which are also a reflection of QB pressures, OUR DBs. They are being asked to cover too long and are getting burned. I thought it was just McKelvin that was sucking until Florence got embarrassed and torched against the Giants. I agree we need to rush more than 4. Our low sack total and the huge amount of time the opposing QBs have to pass generally isn't working. Additionally we are still having trouble against the run so more pressure/bodies up front might do the trick. That being said they are getting it done we are not. The fact that Maybin has been a 3 sack contributor makes it that much worse. -

PDaDdy replied to deep2evans's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
All well and good but the irrefutable fact remains that Maybin has 3 sacks and the entire Bills team has 4 sacks. If Maybin is a piece of crap waste of space then what does that say of our entire defense? You can't look at his performance in a vacuum and NOT compare it to how our TEAM is doing. It's just disgustingly ironic as hell that the under performing piece of junk that we got rid of has almost single handedly equaled our entire teams sack production. Make all the excuses you want. The numbers speak for themselves. -

This I agree with 100%. If we could have kept him on our roster for ~$500K a year I wouldn't have minded if we could have found a use for him as the Jets had. If we were still paying his fat rookie contract no way in hell was he worth it at the time. -

PromoTheRobot, on 23 October 2011 - 01:27 PM, said: All you are doing is harping on stats. You don't know anything about how those sacks were achieved, just that Maybin has some. Maybin is crap, pure and simple. PTR Let's do a little logical proof. If Maybin with 3 sacks is crap pure and simple????....what is an entire team with 4 sacks? DISLAIMER: Crap he may be but pure and simple it isn't. So you're saying that a defensive minded coach put his player in the right position to be successful and the player came through? -

Edwards vs Fitz tells us all we need to know about practice. Sometimes there are great practice guys and sometimes there are gamers. Ideally they are the same person but in reality not always so. Maybin so far has been a gamer for Rex. We never took the time with our 9th overall pick in the draft to see if he just sucked in practice but was a gamer. Antowaine was getting it done before we let him go. He lead a Wade Phillips defense in tackles and was good at DB. -

Our statements aren't mutually exclusive. WE have both said the same thing from a different angle. Your spin is that he couldn't show his talent in practice so it's not our fault we never played him. My spin is this guy looks to be a gamer not a practice guy and we should have given him "significant" time on the field to see if he was a gamer. If you recall our last issue with this exact setup was Trent "The con man" Edwards and Fitz. According to everyone Edwards was the man in practice and Fitz "couldn't show what he had" and never got on the field. Well lookie lookie. Fitz ended up being a gamer and Edwards was proven to be a chump. To my knowledge we don't have the exact same guy on our roster right now. What is his name? I'm not sure I understand that last "capped" sentences. Whose offense is providing a lot of time for Maybin to get to the QB? Not sure I understand. It's not like the Jets are setting the world on fire and scoring points to the point where opposing defenses become 1 dimensional. -

I don't know man. That is a lot of supposition to try to explain away his very real and factual performance. It's not a fluke. It is proven performance. I freakin hate how we didn't get anything out of this guy and I curse his name in large part because he wasn't Orakpo which was the obvious choice for anyone with more than a partially functioning brain stem. Sorry to play devils advocate here but I think you are looking at it backwards. Maybe if we DID have someone like Maybin that could get to the QB our DBs wouldn't look as bad as they do. Maybe if we had a guy that could "get up off the ground" as you put it and could pressure the QB inside the 5th second then our DBs wouldn't be getting burned in the 6th, 7th and 8th seconds. -

He never had an opportunity because he wasn't put into games. He wasn't even active for many of them and wasn't even used in a rotation. For what ever reasons he was not really given any significant game time to see what he could do. I know. The Jets cut him as well when it was just about practice and training camp. What the Jets figured out that WE didn't is that in the game apparently the guy CAN get to the QB if you play him. THAT is a skill we desperately need right now! For all the talk about defense and the improvements we made we are statistically really bad. It's not the end of the world if you can slap up points like the Pats. We aren't consistent at that right now largely because our WRs are being traded away or dropping like flies due to injury. -

I still like the idea of getting a stud NT for this defense and kicking KW out to DE. I'm not an expert but I know that some defensive coordinators like guys with height on the edge to get their hands up which Kyle doesn't have. I think Dareus and Williams unleashed would be an awesome sight if we got a real 350lb NT to hold down the middle. Can you imagine a true modern day NFL NT that could tie up 2 blockers?!?!?!? I know! I know! Player X for team Y plays at only 310 lbs. WHO CARES!!??!? The exception is not the rule!!! Dareus and Williams could free lance and wreak havok. Rush the QB every play and tackle the RB on your way there if he has the ball. That would be SICK!!! Regardless of any changes to defensive personnel, if you're waiting for Merriman to put the lights out we missed that boat by about 3 years. -

I would be ecstatic if Merriman could beat a RB for a sack. Maybin has 3 sacks and the Buffalo Bills have 4 sacks. Draw your own conclusions but he is nearly as effective as our whole team getting to the QB. Pisses me off something fierce but it is what it is. -

I think it was obvious and even Nix mentioned it that Maybin was at almost 250 during the combine and the draft. He played at Penn St in the 220's and has been back in the 220s during his time with us. Maybin was run out of town. Nix said "he just can't seem to keep weight on". How does someone bulk up by 25 lbs over night, lose it and then "can't put it back on"? I feel there is no way we would have drafted the guy if he came into the combine at his college playing weight of 220. He got on the stuff. Got his draft position up. Made his pay day and stole money from the Bills. I don't think the organization trusted a guy that would do that. The role Maybin is playing on the Jets is a role that we need filled. PASS RUSHER!!! We don't have any good ones and it's making our CB's look bad. I thought McKelvin was terrible until I saw Florence look even worse. Our CBs are being asked to cover for too long. -

You can't make sacks sitting on the bench. Apparently he's something of a gamer. I still think he was on something because he showed up at the combine 25 lbs heavier than his playing weight in college. After the draft he shows up in Buffalo back down to his college playing weight. This might have destroyed any trust that Ralph Wilson had in him with this organization. It will indeed suck if Maybin ends up being another in a long list of Bills that got run out of town that ended up contributing or starting on teams for other winning organizations. -
I would say that all the guys below were a success. I'm not talking probowler setting the league on fire but lunch pail show up every day good to great players. We don't know what CJ is yet because he is playing behind the most under appreciated RB in the league who just happens to be leading the NFL in yards from scrimmage. If you hold that against CJ you really don't know what you are talking about. I was ready to bury McKelvin until Drayton Florence played even worse. Both of those guys might be better than they looked the last week if our defense knew what a QB looked like and how to put one on the ground. No turn overs this past Sunday to make up for the lack of sacks like the last few weeks. 1991 Henry Jones Illinois Defensive Back 1992 John Fina Arizona Tackle 1993 Thomas Smith North Carolina Defensive Back 1994 Jeff Burris Notre Dame Defensive Back 1995 Ruben Brown Pittsburgh Guard 1996 Eric Moulds Mississippi State Wide Receiver 1997 Antowain Smith Houston Running Back 1999 Antoine Winfield Ohio State Defensive Back 2001 Nate Clements Ohio State Defensive Back 2003 Willis McGahee Miami (FL) Running Back 2004 Lee Evans Wisconsin Wide Receiver 2006 Donte Whitner Ohio State Safety 2007 Marshawn Lynch California Running Back 2008 Leodis McKelvin Troy Defensive Back ???????????????? 2009 Eric Wood Louisville Center 2010 C.J. Idea: C.J. Spiller to Detroit for 2nd Rounder?
PDaDdy replied to ShipUPride's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Don't usually say this but "dumb thread". Stop hating on CJ and stop hating on first round picks that aren't probowlers their first year. The guy is in his second year and hasn't gotten on the field because he is playing behind the NFL yards from scrimmage leader. Give it a rest. I'll state the incredibly obvious to most. What happens if Fred gets hurt? What happens when Fred's age catches up to him? Why would anyone trade away the 9th overall pick in the 2010 draft 1/3 of the way into the 2011 season when he hasn't had a real chance to play? Get real. -
Talent is talent regardless of age. That being said the exceptions don't invalidate the rule. RBs in particular head down hill and so will Fred. He is kicking ass this year and probably could next year and maybe the year after that. Do you sign him to a 4 or 5 year contract? Yes and no. NO because he will never last that long. YES because nfl contracts aren't worth the paper they are written on and the owners can tear them up anytime they want and kick the player to the curb. Sign Fred to a 20 year contract. Who cares? As soon as he doesn't live up to his contract and his ability drops off we can cut him without financial penalty. The only true concern is guaranteed money. As long as we don't give him 4, 5 or 20 years worth of guaranteed and/or bonus money it means nothing.

WR Terrell Owens Cleared to Play Football
PDaDdy replied to Sniper's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It's already been said but if he is better than what we have, why not sign him? I know the idea is get better through the draft. Low cost contracts is a side effect of that approach but there is more than one way to get better without breaking the bank.
