  1. I'm sure we need a pass rusher or 5 as well. Hopefully we can find guys that can stuff the run and rush the passer. Dareus seemed to be good at it. Let's keep em coming! QB?...that's just for those guys that have the all or nothing savior mentality. Give me an elite top 5 QB or give me death. There are many ways to win in this league and none of those QBs are winning superbowls without good defenses and teams around them. We saw what happened to the packers and the saints with arguably the 2 best QBs in the league. NONE...I repeat NONE of those guys succeed without WRs, and offensive line and in most cases defense. Some people want us to gamble year after year, sacrifice everything to take a shot at a QB thinking they alone will give us a super bowl champ.
  2. Oh god no. We need a guy in the first round that becomes a day 1 starter and immediately contributes. Not a development QB to sit the bench when the coaching staff and GM have already and quite obviously committed to Fitz.
  3. You can run out of the K-gun which was a spread if I am not mistaken. Some guy named Thurman did pretty well as have our RBs. I think our line has done a better job of run blocking specifically this year. We can still line up in a spread formation AND chose to run more! When your top backs are averaging 5 yards per carry and Spiller is always one defender away from scoring we should go to it more. It would also end up opening up the pass as they would keep more defenders in the box to stop what is OBVIOUSLY successful for us. It's a time tested method that I think we would be very good at given our personnel. Run to set up the pass. Gailey's formations and creativity are good in my opinion, he just needs to switch up that one philosophy and use the run to set up the pass. That being said when the WRs, our best offensive lineman and center Eric Wood and FJ were healthy it was all working and we weren't having the discussions. Get healthy on offense AND defense and I think we will be fine. With a better defense Gailey won't have to panic and play catch up pass happy mode all day.
  4. Right on. We don't need consensus. I guess I don't put too much stock into what Ralph says. WE are sort of agreeing. As I have said we would have been just fine with FJ and Lynch but Lynch was on the way out. To me with Fred being 29 at the time RB was a position of need. He had not been given the chance nor was he performing to the level we have now seen so I think at the time it was good idea. We love to make new holes and then use our resources to fill them instead of addressing our weaknesses. Totally agree about Wade Phillips' philosophy about defense. He has a GREAT track record in that respect. Interesting point and also something that baffled me. Obviously Spiller was worlds better than Choice as a rushing and receiving threat. I can't explain the use of Choice other than potentially he is better at blitz pickup.
  5. Are we planning on getting rid of Jackson and nobody knows it yet? Spiller was a need pick with Lynch on the way out. This year it's not a need pick. Matter of fact it is one of our few strengths. Of course I do know you're just being obtuse as opposed to contributing something valuable. But...if we do deal Fred, Richardson could be the pick.
  6. Yes there weren't enough carries. Did you stop to think that maybe they run a lot more plays than we do? Well, let me educate you! Total Plays Houston 1063 Buffalo 969 So ...it seems that Houston ran almost 100 more plays than we did in a 16 game season which comes out to a little over 5 more plays a game. Now for the big one: Rushing Plays Houston 546 Buffalo 391 Houston ran about 40% more rushing plays than we did. So ...again there weren't enough touches for Spiller. Not only was Houston not known for throwing the ball they were 30th in the league in passing attempts. Throw on top of that they didn't have to play from behind because they had a top ranked defense. We, unfortunately had the exact opposite. They were in every game because of their defense while we were always in come from behind mode even when we weren't behind. What Houston DID do is lead the league in rushing attempts. Fred probably couldn't have handled too many if any more carries given that he is 30. Basically if we were Houston with their defense and their run first scheme there would have been another 150 or so carries for the rest of our backs or about 9 more a game. We aren't Houston. Throw in the fact that Gailey runs a pass first offense and it's clear that you have no idea what you're talking about.
  7. Oh god not again. This is starting to sound like Orakpo vs Maybin again accept everyone wanted Orakpo a few years ago. I am no college expert at all but what I have seen of Coples he gets to the QB and got double teamed every play with nobody else getting near the QB. He is a big big dude and supposedly, is projected to run 4.7 in the 40. Again I am no expert but he seems like an athletic kind of guy with freak size who CAN ALSO STOP THE RUN. Remember we suck at that just a little bit less than we do rushing the passer. I would be just fine with the guy. Everything changes after the combine so I am very interested to see what kind of measureables this guy has!
  8. Lynch was all but out the door and Freddy was 29 2 years ago. That's how you justify the pick. If you think the front office was going to keep Lynch despite the screams of an angry pitchfork wielding mob you are as delusional as I used to be. Or....maybe....just maybe....they did know how good he was but there weren't enough touches in the game plan to displace Jackson who was playing like the best RB in the league. So instead of taking best player available at a position of need you suggest we should have reached for someone else and been the laughing stock of the NFL draft again? What kind of sense does that make. Everybody talks a lot of junk about why we shouldn't have gotten Spiller but nobody talks about what players that were projected to go around #9 we should have taken. Even in hindsight people can't answer that. I'm not talking BS here like saying we could have taken player X that was projected to go 10, 20, 50 picks later I mean someone else that was a legitimate possibility. The Bills almost didn't have any other choice. Don't forget that two years ago FJ wasn't playing like he was this year and he was 29 which is pretty near "put out to pasture" time for a RB. Oh and we are talking best player on offense but you could make a case that it was Spiller for the whole team and I really liked the Dareus pick and his team leading 5.5 sacks from the DE/NT spots.
  9. It's really quite simple. All of his WR got hurt. We had a wild cat QB and a RB starting at WR at one point and guys that were driving trucks and bagging groceries at the beginning of the year. We lost our best offensive lineman Eric Wood and our best player FJ. Pretty simple. Any QB needs players around him. How people can't factor that in and look at Fitz in a vacuum baffles me. Don't even get me started on our defense.
  10. You do realize he was injured all year right?...OH...never mind. Continue bashing and whiny over players no longer on the team. ....and people say I can't let the Jason Peters fiasco go.
  11. Is Marty Schotehiemer available for OC? We could use some Marty ball. Gailey IS a good offensive mind but he does get pass happy when we get down by 2 scores even when the run is working. Obviously how poorly our defense plays figures into the equation which is probably why Gailey goes into pass mode. You can cut it up a bunch of different ways but I think that if the defense improves you will see Gailey stick with the run more.
  12. He was a good player and a solid person but I would probably prefer a guy that was a WR full time. That being said if he knows how to coach the position he knows how to coach the position. Perhaps his QB knowledge would end up being an added benefit.
  13. Easy answer we were to busy NOT playing Maybin whose 6 sacks would have made him our team sack leader. We were also too invested in Shawn Merriman who hasn't put up any good numbers since 5 seasons ago. Apparently the only ones that thought Merriman still had gas in the tank were Merriman and Nix.
  14. To be sure none of the fans told him to do it but you already knew that. The young man made some mistakes and we certainly didn't let him forget them did we? So, Lynch's days were numbered and we drafted Spiller to replace him. "Give the people what they want. We hope they get what they deserve." Spiller looks like a dynamic play maker who still has even more upside and certainly has YOUTH over FJ. Are you arguing both sides here? Not sure where you are going with it. Seems like you are saying that Marshawn had to go because of his actions and mistakes, which I am fine with, yet we shouldn't have drafted the best player available to replace him and eventually supplant the then 29 and soon to be 31 year old RB Fred Jackson? With all due respect to Stevie Johnson, when Fred went down Spiller looked like the best player on the field. Kudos to Nix for making the right call and drafting the BPA despite the uneducated fan's chants of "bust" and "luxury pick".
  15. I am still for drafting a pass rusher DE or OLB/DE. It's our biggest need. The problem is is that if that elite day 1 starter at one of those positions isn't there at #10 and one of the premier LTs is....you get the LT plug him in and the Left side of your line is set for years with Levitre and Wood. People that keep banging the QB drum don't often pay attention to the fact that those guys have SOLID LTs. Pass rusher first no doubt ...but if that guy isn't there and a premier day 1 starter LT is ....you run up to the podium with the card.
  16. Funny how all of these people that have bought into the "it's passing league" trend. It is more pass heavy than it has been because of rule changes. Defenses will catch up to be sure. The NFL being a passing league doesn't mean the only way you can win is with an elite soon to be hall of famer at QB. You still need to run the ball and you sure as HELL still need to play defense. Funny how the 2 best QBs in the league are already out of the playoffs and the teams with better defenses won If Brady goes down next weekend I wonder what people will say then? Maybe something along the lines of "defense wins championships"? ...lol
  17. I didn't say I defended those picks but I basically do. McGahee was a bit of a stretch coming back from the horrific knee injury but apparently Travis Henry was on his way out. When will Bills fans realize that this team has a history of good RBs and we will continue to try to have a talented relatively highly drafted RB on this team. Fans love to run RBs out of town like Henry, McGahee and Lynch. Keep it up and then they'll be drafting another RB in the first. Maybe if we quit our whiny WNY bitching and support some of these guys through their screw ups we won't have to keep restocking the same position. Your not getting it. You are speaking academics. This is what I would do if I was GM but you don't ground your conversation in reality with the talent that was on the board and what we or any team would have drafted at the time. It's easy to play captain hindsite and say things like we could have taken Brady in the 1st knowing what he has now become. RB is not only NOT a position of need it is currently a position of great STRENGTH (Fred Jackson's age aside) The only way we get Richardson is if we are already planning on getting rid of Jackson for picks. If the good pass rushers, LTs and QBs are off the board and Richardson is best player available....who knows what happens? It's a very unlikely scenario so it's probably not even worth discussing. Actually you bring up a great point. Even with Brees the Saints have spent considerable resources on RBs considering Reggie Bush a few years ago. Ingram was their first round pick last year I believe. Nobody is questioning them for taking best player available even if it happens to be a RB when they already had a stable full. That or maybe Fred was far and away the fan favorite and was playing like the best RB in the league. How does ANY RB displace that guy? Sadly we got behind too often in games. Not by a huge amount but when that happens Gailey abandons the run. I think if our defense keeps the games more competitive we WILL use them both more. Dude. It happens Deal with it. If you have first round pick Aaron Rogers sitting on your bench and he is behind Farve is he a bust? Why did it take their first round pick so long to adjust to the NFL? When you are playing behind a legend or a guy playing like the best in the league at their position you ain't getting much playing time. Fred TURNED INTO arguably the best RB in the league this year in Gailey's system. How can anyone fault Spiller for not displacing Jackson? When he did get his shot he showed EVERYBODY wrong. Now people are crying sour grapes and are still trying to hang onto their bold baseless unsubstantiated claims that he was a luxury pick bust. Even the densest headed fans can't call him a bust anymore so they are desperately clinging to the "luxury pick" label to try to save some face. News flash Lynch's days were numbered due to the caustic environment fans created for him in Buffalo. With all the crap people talked about him I wouldn't be surprised if he asked to be traded. I love that we have Spiller but have freely admitted if we just decided to keep Lynch and went to another position of need we would have been just fine. Sadly Lynch's days were numbered.
  18. Great point. We focus too much attention on the first round. Don't get me wrong. That is a hugely important pick but it isn't your only pick to address your issues by any stretch of the imagination. Spiller was pretty much best player available at a position of need with rare speed, quickness and pass catching ability. Some of the same people that helped to run Marshawn out of town are the same people bitching that we spent a 1st round pick to replace him.
  19. You are seriously off your meds. There are only a small handful of QBs that can obfuscate the need for a quality RB. You tell me which one we should have drafted and then you MIGHT have a point. OH...nobody that was deemed worthy of the #9 pick in the 2009 draft? Guess it just shoots the hell out your argument doesn't it. While you're at it remember that this team was still dedicated to Trent Deadwards and wasn't looking for a QB. Quit being argumentative. RB's are not a dime a dozen. Rushing will never be taken out of the game. Again you can't make the exception the rule. The majority of teams in the league need a RB because they don't have Manning, Rogers, Brady and Brees.
  20. While he's at it can he get our WRs to stay healthy so we are not down to starting a wild cat QB at, a guy that was #6 on the depth chart starting the season, truck drivers and grocery baggers at WR? Can he also get our line to provide reliable protection so that Fitz doesn't have to be the second fastest QB in the league at getting rid of the ball?
  21. All those teams which I am quite familiar with as possibly the original poster is as well had all the other pieces in place including a great RB named Thurman Thomas. Jim Kelly was pretty good too eh? Fitz statistically out performed him by the way.
  22. And that was without our best offensive lineman Eric Wood. +1
  23. I'm with ya on everything except your opinion of Lynch. As usual he is loved by his team mates and is producing at a very high rate now that he has learned the Seattle offense and blocking. He has become an almost weekly highlight and made the phrase "beast mode" a national phenomena. I am very glad we have Spiller but Lynch and Jackson would have been just fine too.
  24. How about you brush up on your reading comprehension. Please point out where I said the running back IS the future of the franchise! I said getting a RB had to be considered FOR the future of the franchise. Get the difference? So why don't you invent your time machine. Go back in time. Slap yourself in the face and stop yourself from making an embarrassing dumb post. I have no idea what comparing Spiller who looks to possibly be great to Donte Whitner has anything to do with anything. Nice bush league attempt at guilt by association I guess. Looking at Spiller's last 5 games and projecting for the year he would be looking at 2000 yards from scrimmage and 14 TDs combined rushing and receiving. That is not only NOT a bust but ELITE RB performance. Pointing out teams with exceptional, record breaking, hall of fame QBs and using them as examples for not needing a good RB is like pointing to Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls and saying you don't need a good center to win in the NBA. The exception is not the rule. I don't think anyone is stupid enough to fall for your junk. Chase the Xanax down with a couple shots and take a nap.
  25. Yes Spiller and Dareus look pretty damn good. You did mean the CURRENT front offices history of 1st round picks right?
