  1. Okay because I have a noted liking for this guy I wouldn't mind engaging in a serious conversation on this guy. What I see is someone who broke through this year. In an interview he said it finally all came together for him and that is why he had a breakout year. I also see a guy who has absolutely no knocks on him. I see a guy without strength concerns, without run stopping problems, with speed to close on qbs, with a knack for causing fumbles, led the nation in sacks and ff playing in a major conference, ideal size for a 43 end at 6-4 265. So I ask save for the 1 year wonder concern why don't people like this guy? Is it truly that Maybin has scared everyone away from anyone who only has 1 productive year? This guy is certainly no Maybin (and even Maybin had 6 sacks this year but I don't care to talk about him). Please help me understand what I'm not seeing. I would love this guy to be the Bills pick at 10. http://walterfootball.com/scoutingreport2012wmercilus.php all of the below is from this link Whitney Mercilus was the most productive pass-rusher in college football in 2011. He led the nation in sacks (16) and forced fumbles (9). It was a record-setting season as Mercilus topped Simeon Rice's school record for sacks in a year. Like Rice, Mercilus is a fabulous athlete. He has a special combination of size, speed and strength to go along with excellent technique. Mercilus also recorded 57 tackles and 22.5 tackles for a loss. Entering the NFL, Mercilus is an advanced pass-rusher. He got the better of the best tackles he faced this season. Against Ohio State's Mike Adams, Mercilus recorded 1.5 sacks with a forced fumble. The Wisconsin Badgers' powerful offensive line couldn't contain Mercilus. He bull rushed through massive right tackle Josh Oglesby to get a sack-fumble on Russell Wilson. Mercilus also knocked out left tackle Ricky Wagner for part of the game. Mercilus has a very impressive repertoire of pass rushing moves. He attacks with speed around the edge. As a counter to the speed, he has the strength to execute rip moves and shed offensive linemen. Mercilus has the raw power to get under offensive linemen's pads and bull rush into the pocket. That catches linemen by surprise as they are so cognizant of being ready for his speed rush. Beyond his great physical skill set, Mercilus is an advanced pass-rusher technically. Mercilus holds up well in run defense. Linemen don't push him around, as he is strong at the point of attack. He also will burst into the backfield to disrupt running plays. The big question regarding Mercilus is why didn't break into the lineup sooner and why didn't he produce more earlier. In 2009 and 2010, Mercilus combined to record 24 tackles with two sacks and 6.5 tackles for a loss. Player Comparison: Jason Pierre-Paul. There are a lot of similarities between Mercilus and JPP. Both are fantastic athletes who come to the NFL with a special combination of speed and strength. They also were one-year wonders at the college level. Mercilus had more production than JPP in their final college season, and the latter has turned into one of the best pass-rushers in the NFL.
  2. how can you post a link to an article that is titled "Buddy Nix: We'll be aggressive for a difference maker" then say he won't be aggressive? The very first quote from him is this: “And when I say we’re gonna be aggressive, what I mean is this time if there’s a difference-maker — not necessarily a position — but if there’s a guy that can come in here and immediately improve our football team, we’ll get in the hunt early this time,” Nix said.
  3. why Coples? I think there is a general consensus that he is highly over rated. Whether it is his effort or production that is questioned the only real thing he brings is prototypical size. I don't want him at all but definitely not in a trade up. At 10 give me Martin, Floyd, or Mercilus (I think Ingram will be gone btw).
  4. when I saw his right after I had clarified that it was indeed me who had said it I wondered how bad the reading comprehension on this board was but then again this could also explain it.
  5. that was my quote not his... and I wouldn't mind VJ on the Bills but not for the money it will take.
  6. I'm left with 13 names. I cut your post short but it was an excellent one. I will point out though that stats and facts have no place in this argument Yes I will agree that TEs do get more catches but they are completely different positions. Even still all of your numbers point to Stevie being a top 20 pass catcher. How much higher would he have to rank to be a #1?! As for my answer to the OP... #1 receiver to me is an outdated term that used to aplly to the x receiver in an offense. Now there really isn't many #1 receivers per se as there are options and progressions now a days. So maybe the #1 is the guy who more often than not is option/progression #1. For the Bills that clearly is SJ.
  7. eh not all of bleacher report is bad. Some of it is very insightful and sometimes much more than ESPN. I really don't care for the ESPN reporting style of story first facts/fact checking later. Much of bleacher report is fan speculation and op ed pieces but then again so are many journalist pieces. I will agree that it may not be credible for sources but as ideas I don't mind it.
  8. I think we are both happy about the signing so but now I have to disagree with a few things in your post No way Bowe or Colston come in for 3-5 million a year. Bowe was tagged so he is off the market but I would like to point out he has a serious reputation for dropping balls (moreso than Stevie). I would like Colston and think he is an excellent player, however he isn't a burner either. VJ wasn't hurt he chose to sit out games the year before last in a contract dispute. As for upside I would think a 26 year old receiver (Stevie) has more upside than a 29 year old (VJ) who is a burner as age will more than likely catch up with VJ soon. I will agree with your chicken and egg theory though. It is tough to figure what accounts more in those situations. However I think we can both agree that Rivers is better than Fitz. For 1.5 million I'm glad your not upset and I like the structures of his and Fitzs contract of being frontloaded. As Stevie comes into his prime he will be affordable and the cap will be available to fill in spots around him. I think 24 million in the first 3 years is acceptable and 12 over the last 2 is a steal.
  9. A big name like that would never come to Buffalo!
  10. When I saw the topic title my immediate thought was Hell NO! Took a second thought about it some more and came up with F**K NO
  11. kind of getting sick of ESPN altogether. They are so biased towards the bigger markets its sickening. I hate all of the Boston sports teams due to their rivalries with my favorite teams (Yankees, Lakers, Bills) and can't stand the slurping of everything Boston. If only their were an alternative network.... I still love PTI but thats about it - even sportscenter isn't as god as it used to be
  12. Chandler Jones - what he did against WVU reminded me of JJ Watt against Ohio St. Single handedly took over 2 back to back series and kept the momentum with SU. Nick Provo - Safety valve for Nassib. Always seemed to be open when needed and came through with a ton of first down conversions
  13. Wow where do I begin.... 76 receptions is no big deal right? how about the fact that VJ has never had more than 68and DeSean more than 62 in a season You don't want me to only compare the last 2 years? Okay in a 7 year career VJ has 272 receptions in a 4 year career (with 2 getting barely any playing time mind you) he has 170 receptions (well on pace to be ahead of VJ). In the same 4 years (starting all of them) DeSean has 229 receptions. So I guess with 2 extra years DeSean got 59 more catches which is far from spectacular. You would consider my argument if Stevie caught 100 balls for 1200 yards or 12 tds right? Do you realize that never in either of VJ or Mesean's career they've reached those numbers. His numbers aren't that good for being THE GUY? How about having the most yardage against Revis or the fact that he is the only threat on the team at wr. Defenses must focus on Antonio Gates, (at one time) Tomlinson, Sproles, Malcolm Floyd (better than anyone else we have) for SD. For the Eagles they have Maclin, McCoy, and Celek to pull coverage off of them. How good is 76 for 1005 and 7 tds? I would say comparable to 60 for 1106 and 9 tds (VJ) and much better than 58 for 961 and 4 tds (DeSean) I will also add rank these 3 qbs: Vick, Rivers, Fitzpatrick Come on man I know he plays for the Bills and gets no ESPN love but I think I more than proved that he is at least on par (if not better than) VJ and DJ. Somehow you would rather pay 2 guys who have been quitters on their team over someone who has been solid... OH WELL JUST GOT THE TEXT WELCOME BACK STEVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  14. Better numbers than both vj and mesean but you'd pay them 9 and not Stevie?! Get some facts and a clue. People like you may not run him out of town but your ignotance definitely gives bills fans a bad name.
  15. I'll pile on. Hes signed sealed and delivered to New England. He had his best year under McDaniels and said he would follow him wherever he goes.
  16. Mike Wallace puts up some gaudy numbers so I wanted to check him out to get more info. Steeler fans are saying that he is a one trick pony who can only run the streak route (sound familiar) also they call into question his hands. Another thing they add is that Antonio Brown is the more complete receiver. There were many comparisons to Nate Washington on the board. He is a good player maybe will end up being a great player but #10 is to much for him. Consider that the #10 pick will get a much smaller contract than Wallace will command and it doesn't make financial sense either. If he was an out and out free agent yes, for our #10 and big bucks no.
  17. I wouldnt really care about any of the bolded at 10. I understand your point though and it is a valid onr. How about this though, how many of these guys would you be happy with: Mercilus - DE Clemson Upshaw - OLB Alabama Kirkpatrick - CB Alabama Perry - de/olb USC Brockers - DT LSU Cordy Glenn - OG UGA Branch - DE Clemson Hightower - ILB Alabama your list and my list makes 20 and I didn't include players who aren't a fit and will be top 20 picks (kendall wright, mark barron, dontari poe, janoris jenkins, etc..). A trade down would still leave a good player and add an extra pick. Some of these positions (dt, de, wr, cb, ot) have wildly different order of who teams feel are the top 3. Trading down i na year like this where the waters are a bit muddied as to who is the clear cut best is not the worst thing. The more picks the Bills get the better the shot of landing quality.
  18. I feel that Stevie genuinely wants to come back here. I think that is why they are working on it now. I know we are jaded as fans but sometimes players may actually have some loyalty and Stevie seems to fit this. http://www.centralkynews.com/amnews/sports/amn-uk-football-exwildcat-johnson-legit-after-rupp-arena-introduction-20120229,0,3516535,full.story “I guess I was just blessed to be in a great spot. It’s all about where you end up. Those guys (from UK) are still probably better or at least equal in talent to me, but it’s about where you end up. I was fortunate to end up in Buffalo and got to play. The coaches saw something in me and I got an opportunity. It’s a weird league. There’s a lot of talent you never get to see because of the team’s style of play where a guy lands.” Where Johnson lands next year remains in doubt. He insists he would like to stay in Buffalo, where quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has signed a new deal. Buffalo could use the franchise tag on him to keep him, or let Johnson test the free agent market. “I was already planning on making a change as far as the type of mentality I have on and off the field,” Johnson said. “I have put in time with my quarterback. I know my quarterback will be there for the long run. If I sing a long-term deal, I¿can do all I can to build up the organization. I am going to change and become a better player and person around the (team) facility.”
  19. actually tbh I love that attitude. Maybe they wouldnt be sub 500 if they did that. Cam just had the statistically most impressive rookie year by a qb EVER. Most passing yards and rushing tds! He improved his teams win total by 5 games! The great ones (some of them anyway) have this attitude - wrong sport but that quote reminds me of something Kobe or MJ would say.
  20. he is just shy of 6'3" and weighs 223 (combine results) which is not small by any means. Also he showed a steady progression in his passing skills. He went from completing 59.9% to 72.4% by his last year. 36tds to 6 ints, 3,998 yards and a 192.3 rating. That is why he os thought of as a great prospect/franchise cornerstone
  21. not so fast my friend http://www.buffalorumblings.com/2012/3/1/2835452/buffalo-bills-are-not-in-on-robert-griffin-iii-per-buddy-nix "I've visited with (the Rams)," Nix continued, "but not about that. We talk to everybody, and we kick the tires on everybody, but if we were going to probably move either way, it'd be down, not up." I agree that it most likely won't happen and the Bills will stay put at 10 but I don't think it is set in stone either.
  22. How about every one year wonder being compared to Maybin? How about every Texas player is lazy because Mike Williams was? How about every qb from california sucks in Buffalo weather because trent and rob johnson did? I can't stand some of the ignorant comparisons on this board! I really wonder sometimes if people watch football or just come here to stir sh*t up.
  23. Surprisingly he mentioned if they moved anywhere it would be down. I would love it. Couple that with this link and I may get my wish! http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/02/25/illinois-mercilus-says-bills-showing-a-lot-of-interest-in-him/
  24. The cool thing about 2 monday nighters is the west coast getting a true prime time game. Its the only time it happens all year. Most MNF start at 5:30 for them which is kinda sh*tty. On the flip side it sucks for whichever team get that opening mnf games, or more accurately their fans. Nothing worse than opening day coming and your team not playing. That is except for them playing and blowing a huge lead late to their most hated division foe but I digress...
