Heartbreaking Divisional Round loss...just like in '89...
RyanC883 replied to Big Turk's topic in The Stadium Wall
I have to respectuflly disagree, wrt Bean's early picks. Oliver was picked at 9, you need an instant impact player, not developmental. Ed dropped from 1st overall in most mocks to 9, there was a reason, he was a developmental player. Brian Burns would have been a better pick, or Jeff Simmons. Later in the 1st round that year, Bean picked Cody Ford, passing on Elgton Jenkins. Edmunds was a total reach, given that we could have not traded up and taken Vander Esch or Darius Leonard. Groot and Boogie (inactive most of the year) were not a BPA, Barmore would have been more impactful, esp. given the need for run stopping on our D, or Freiermuth at TE with Knox; or Nick Bolton, who played well against us again today; or Creed Humphry. Bean has missed an AWFUL LOT in the 1st 2 rounds. I wouldn't blow the whole thing up, but Bean needs to add talent to the front 7. We are in win-now mode, do what hockey teams often do, trade 1st rounders for proven vets. We don't have developmental time. We have like a 5-10 year window. yep, was open all game. Never solved by Frazier or our great MLB Edmunds. that's something, but also nothing. dude, relax man. we are arguing about 1 win here. I think we had a harder schedule this year. We don't beat KC the first time w/o Allen, or the Pats in the regular season at all, and the Panthers and Falcons games become awfully close. Heck, the Jets game at the end of the year. -
i don't know, why not? depends on if the Steelers are in rebuild mode. The Steelers are another team, if Rodgers is there, another challenge. Hopefully Rodgers stays in GB, which fails to put a winning team around him. yep, I think the best way is FA. I could only think of Watt, but there might be FA's available.

i totally agree there is not always an upside. I mean, this could turn into a 90's Marino situation. That would suck. But, on the other hand, we could add a few players and this could turn into (I don't have a football analogy) but something awesome. Washington Capitals finally winning with Ovechkin? (as a Pens fan I hate to use that analogy, and I'd like to win more than once).

well, true. but how do we improve. we treaded water this year basically.

agreed, OL was better when Bates was playing. But they are not elite, and we are like 1 injury away from total disaster. I'd even take a center in Rd. 1 if he is BPA (I can't recall who, but there is some college center projected in Rd. 1). I also like the idea of adding Shrieff or another type OL

forgot about that. What a freaking joke. Bean has been fine in FA, you're right. But Oliver at 9 is a bust, you need an immediate impact guy at 9. Knox was a good pick, he seems to be better in later rounds. This year he took Groot and Boogie, while our "rival" snatched up an all pro OL and great LB. Said LB made plays today, Groot was invisible. He reaches in the first rounds of the draft. -

yep, guess he did. We would not go 9-7 with TT this year. I think we just value Allen v. the other players differently. that's fine. -
Ok, offseason time. Not going to talk about one game. Here is what I have seen this year: 1. We have a STUD QB. Allen backed up one great year with another. He balled out at the biggest times in the playoffs. 2. We severely lack on OL, DL, and RB. Motor is great, but we run Josh too much for a reason. We need a true no. 1 back like Mixon, or at least someone who can rotate with motor (similar to what KC does) 3. our recent draft picks have not been BPA, but reaching for DL to stop KC. Oops, didn't work. 4. We have added some impactful FA's (notably Diggs, Sanders, Beasley). So, what should we do. I think we trade 1st picks for impactful players on rebuilding teams. My dream (unlikely) is to get Watt from the Steelers with 3 first round picks. More realistic is to get perhaps a vet OL or DL, or LB in FA. I don't think we can keep Edmunds, someone will overpay for his "potential." (can we still trade him?) We have the hard part (elite QB). How do we solve the rest (notably, OL, RB, and front 7). ?

sorry, had to give thumbs down. Baseball, I can't even. Lacrosse soon. Gary Gait as SU Coach! Women's team also looks good. -
How many chances does McDermott have left?
RyanC883 replied to Igotbills's topic in The Stadium Wall
Sean will be here unless Bean fails to add impact players for him and he gets axed with Bean. We have to draft impact players or, I'd see what PGH wants for Watt. That guy takes over a game on D like no one since, well, Bruce. Send Edmunds (they can have 2 Edmunds again) and 2-3 firsts. We likely pick later in the first, and Bean blows those anyway, so I expect it's not much loss for us and a huge gain. -

well, they were 10-6 in 2017 with career backup Alex Smith as QB. true they were around him, but I think I've seen this in other games. You need to close the escape routes. One way is sending a LB or DB late. We did nothing. You can't send 4 v. Mahomes and expect anything of consequence to happen. -

oh, ridiculous, but not as ridiculous as the OT rule. Such as half-assed change. Let's give both teams the ball, but, um, not if the first team scores. Half-sudden-death, half not. -

who never won a SB with a loaded Philly team, and lucked into one with a loaded KC team. Reid is overrated, IMO. That said, Bean is the bigger issue. I mean, we have Allen and zip on the front 7 to pressure other QB's. Another offseason of adding non impactful players and Bean should be gone. And Stafford was not/is not as good as Allen. You need other players. Or look at Marino. Basically went to a SB and never again. -
we need a stud RB so we can stop running JA so much. I mean, every now and then. But it was like Daboll had no clue, and it was a middle school offense of Josh running almost every other play for a while.
-
agree with all of this, but our defense was #1 only because of the weak teams it faced. It would have had it's hands full with the Bengals also. Allen is the NFL's best QB, what he just did against 2 good D's (NE and KC) were amazing.

hopefully the new OC will also tell Bean who to draft for OL, and to stop taking players of need (DL last year) instead of BPA.

I love the optimism of the OP, but man, this is nothing like 89, I don't think. We don't have Bruce Smith, or anything similar (unless we trade 3 firsts for Watt, which I would do given Bean's drafting in the 1st minus Josh). We have no impact LB's, and the OL has no one like Kent Hull, Ritcher, etc. We have Allen. I've used the Marvin Lewis Bengals analogy, but a better one is the 90's Dolphins. Marino and ..... Bean won't be fired, while I think he should be, but another offseason of adding zero impact players and he needs to go. The window is there, but we need other players. It's a QB league, but he can't do it all himself. Also, Allen better win NFL MVP. If he's not on this team I doubt we are even 8-8. -

100% agree. Esp. with Bean. He added NOTHING from last year's team, and look at the result. He adds nothing again and he should be gone. Frankly, I'd ditch him now, but one more try, okay. -

losing in the playoffs, similar to 90's Dolphins. I agree not fire everyone, but Frazier's D's have been bad for the last 2 years, and Bean--while he won't be fired, had better nail this draft and offseason. Because we are so close, right now, and Bean failed this past offseason. -

problem is, there isn't always next year. I'm sure the Dolphins thought they would eventually beat us after getting to the SB in Marino's rookie year. Never happened again. -

you have added literally nothing here all night, congrats on that. -
that would take a creative DC. you fair catch at the 5 and get it at the 25? that's new to me, although I've never seen it happen. Explains squib kicks.

Bean failed miserably on this D. Total failure, and failure by Frazier to go into prevent. I'd make the D take a bus home. They failed the team. yeah, shutting down stuff you disagree with? -

having a franchise QB gives you a chance. It's wonderful after the last 17 years. But it's going to get very infuriating if Bean can't figure out how to build a D that can stop other teams, esp. in crunch time. Otherwise, we won't win a single thing.
