  1. Except for one very bad game where he threw 4 INT's, Cousins looked like an NFL starter. He doesn't play scared with lots of dump offs. He has a good & accurate arm. I don't know if he'll ever be a great QB, but he could very well be a very good option for the Bills.

My 2nd choice would be Hoyer who, like Cousins, threw too many INT's but did win games especially with 4th Q comebacks. Some of his INT's were the result of a certain WR running the wrong routes.

Both of these QB's would come at a reasonable price & either would provide good training camp competition. Most importantly, they will both be available.

  2. I love Aaron Murray. He's a little limited physically by NFL standard but is tough and a winner. That SEC championship game that Georgia came up a couple of yards short in was one of the guttiest games that I have ever seen a guy play. I would not be even a little surprised to see him turn into a Matt Schaub type of pro. I would much, much, much, much rather give up a 5th for Murray than to draft any QB this year not named Jameis or Marcus. Just my opinion but he has ALL the QB intangibles. He may never amount to more than a backup but he is the kind of guy that I think will be in this league for a while. I don't want him as the only option as this point but he could be your QB of the future IMO.

I also love Aaron Murray. He was a terrific college QB & imho will turn out better than Schaub. The only reason he hasn't been playing is his rehab & his playing behind a vet.

Good topic. I think that a lot of the problem is with offensive coaches who have 200 page play books with 1,000s of play variations. What I mean by that is that is I think coaches make QBs think too much and don't ever allow them to play with a clear mind.

An athlete, especially a QB, is at their best when they let their natural instincts take over and they don't fear failure. It's why it seems that the majority of QBs no matter their skill level are at their best running a 2 min offense when the playbook becomes much more simplified.

I've been saying all along that EJ Manuel still has not been given a real shot to show what he is as a QB because of Marrone's "avoid any risk at all costs" offense. Is EJ a potential throw the ball 30-40 times a game franchise QB? No way, but I think he is a guy with a potential to be good if he were told to stop thinking, take chances and play instinctively. I do see Manuel as potentially an average to above average NFL QB who is good enough to get the team in the playoffs, then can go on a hot streak kind of like Eli or Flacco. I'm looking forward to seeing how Manuel performs under a professional NFL offensive coach. It should be clear to everyone by now that Marrone was indeed a big anchor to Manuel's development, how much so we will get to see this year.

Agree. Jim Kelly, running the Hurry up offense, had a limited amount of plays.

You're kidding, right? I'm not even a GB fan and I blame him. You don't kick FGs when you're inside the 3-yard line -- ever. Every piece of statistical analysis available to mankind makes it clear that the expected points average of going for the TD is greater than taking the FG.

He did it twice from the 1 yd line. Just another coach that a great QB made into a "genius".

  5. We are in section 102, row 27, seats 62-69. We plan on spending about 5 days in London; 4 days in Scotland (Edinborough) and 5 days in Ireland (Dublin). Stopping in Buffalo first and hope to catch a home game before the London game. Flying out of Toronto. Probably staying with my nephew in Notting Hills where he and his wife live.

Our routine is similar. Is flying out of Toronto the best way to go?

  6. I can't believe there are still people on the Cousins bandwagon. He's another one who I would be OK being brought in to compete, but not if we have to sacrifice a draft pick to do it.

I think that Cousins is a lot better than those on this board give him credit for. He threw a lot of int's this past year because he was trying to do too much. Coaching can fix this. He is aggressive & the Bills could use a QB with some balls.

  7. I like Chase quite a bit as a guy that has potential to be an Alex Smith type. He was Brees' shadow in New Orleans. They were ultra competitive and Chase followed him everywhere. He showed well in his limited action and has learned under some great teachers. I could see him turning into like a Nick Foles or a Alex Smith. His talent keeps his ceiling lower than the elite guys but he is certainly worth kicking the tires on.

Is he a little mobile & is he accurate ?

  8. I read a piece a year or two ago that made a fairly convincing case for Moore being better than Tannehill. I don't know if I agree with that at this point, but he was pretty good the last time he saw significant action back in 2011. In 13 games (12 starts) he averaged 7.2 ypa, threw 16 TDs to 9 INT, and went 6-6 with a sorry Dolphins team that went 0-4 in games he didn't start.

I doubt he'll make any pro-bowls but he's a decent pro that will give us at least Ortonesque production if not better, and if EJ or someone else beats him out for the starting job then he will have earned it.

I agree. I also like Hoyer who seems to be a good Play Action QB. That would be important if we are going to be a run first team.

  9. Belichick probably cheated in that Kurt Warner Super Bowl and he probably cheated in Super Bowl 25 when he was defensive coordinator for the giants. Both the rams and bills were unstoppable coming into those Super Bowls. I find it hard to believe belichick is that good

BB didn't stop the Bills. The Bills scored 19 points in 19 minutes. The game was lost by the D which couldn't get stops on 3rd down. For that reason, NY won time of possesion by approximately 40 - 20.

  10.

Good list of questions John, but I can already give you the answers.

    - Do you feel Sammy Watkins was underutilized last year?

"I wasn't here last year so I can't speak to that, all I can tell you is we are going to look at every way to get the ball in the hands of our playmakers and Sammy Watkins is an outstanding playmaker. We are excited to have him."

    - Do you feel that running a dive on 1st down is critical to drive success?

"I think you have to be balanced. That is what every team is striving for - balance. We will try to mix it up and not be predictable but we are going to run the football."

    - What is your opinions on OT's moving to OG....is that a good thing or a bad thing (Kujo)

"I don't think there are any hard and fast rules. We are going to look at the guys on the roster on the o-line and evaluate what we have and go from there. I looked at Koundjio coming out and I thought he had some strengths and we are excited to see how he comes along."

    - How vital are TE's gong to be in this offense

"We are going to try and fit the offense to the strengths of the guys we have. If we have a guy at tight end who is making plays for us then we are going to get him the ball often."

    - Do you feel we have a true NT on the team if we are going to run 3-4

"I think we have some terrific players ont he defensive line. We are going to look at them and evaluate their stengths and fit our scheme to the talent that we have."

    - Do you feel that our secondary is better suited to play press coverage........is that a important factor in your defense

"We are not going to just do one thing on defense, we will make sure we are able to play some press and some zone and put our guys in the best situations to make a play."

    - What is the plan now for Kiko Alonzo as he was out all year and now comes back to yet another DC

"The first thing is making sure Kiko is ready to go physically. If he is we are excited to have him back he is an explosive player who makes plays."

    - Spikes?

We are still in the evluation phase and part of that is looking at our guys that are free agents and seein which ones we need to try and bring back."

    - What will Hughes role be in this D? Do you feel he is a every down player in this D?

"Jerry Hughes is an outstanding football player. Clearly he has the option to explore free agency if he chooses but we want him back here, and if he is we will put him in positions to make plays."

    - When we hear that "competition" will be brought in at QB......exactly what TYPE of competition? Former QB starter, trade for a starter, draft?

"We are not going to tie ourselves to a specific type of guy. I think as Rex and Doug have said we are going to leave no stone unturned."

You have all the verbal attributes for being a coach.

  11. The following is copied & pasted from an email from a Jets fan.
Rex has no conception of game management particularly on the offensive side. One other problem... his defenses can hold a team down for two quarters but in the last 2 minutes of a half give up a hell of a lot of points. It got so there was a string of games, in which the Jets were close or ahead, at the end of the first half gave up crucial, momentum changing scores after playing "bend don't break" defense. His guys forget the don't break part.

  12. Even his most ardent supporters would concede his report card has some "needs improvement" grades in important areas. I'm saying in his next starts (assuming he gets any) I have no idea what we'll see, after what would earliest be almost a year on the bench. The entire range from sharp as a tack to dud is possible. And if we're going to dump guys after 2 seasons for not performing to their draft status then dareus would have been gone too.

Most of us would agree that EJ is inaccurate. If he is inaccurate because he simply can't hit an open receiver (not likely) , then there is little hope. However, if he is inaccurate because of a lack of confidence causing him to overthink the whole process which should be 2nd nature (more likely), then there is hope. I used to be negative on EJ, but am coming around to the lack of confidence scenario.

  13. Speed isn't a skill set. If it were a lot of 5'10" WRs this team has drafted would be all pros. Can't wait to move on from Spiller. Lacks the true skill determined expected of legit feature back, namely vision, willingness to cut up field into a hole, toughness, strength, and occasional pass blocking. He's a niche player that this team outside of Gailey couldn't utlize.

I agree with you Zonabb. There are people on this board that think you can just sign a late round draftee or an undrafted F.A. & then simply plug them in. Although I don't think that one has to draft a RB in the 1st round, there are differences that the very good RB's possess. Just watch the replays of the Steelers, Bell, Watch how he patiently allows his line to create very small creases & then pops the run for 10 yards. The replays from behind the Steelers during the Tn game was especially enlightening. Spiller has speed - period. IMHO he is a below average runner & even in a Sproles type role, will never be a Sproles. Sign him if we must, but if we need the $$$ to re sign a more important member of the team, I say - let him walk.

  14.

But he did say it -- although not in that manner. He was specifically asked "what if they don't improve" and he answered it honestly. He essentially said, "we have to be prepared for that, which is why we're always looking for a replacement."

I'm a huge Whaley fan -- the man has a plan and he's sticking to it.

Can't think of a better person to be running the Draft than Whaley. He has a lot more hits than misses. A QB usually masks the misses for GMs throughout the league. The Steelers are a good team to emulate for long term success.

  15. Leroi knew about the Rex/roman stuff before it was reported.

Wow. Leroi knew (or guessed correctly). Everyone seems to treat this guy as if he is really an insider.

I predict that EJ will not be cut. So, if he isn't cut, does that make me & others with the same prediction, revered insiders. Leroi doesn't know squat what is going on behind the scenes. I trust Kirby's knowledge more than Leroi's.
