I keep being very encouraged by his play week after week and thought he had a very good game today. He's improving on run coverage too. Since he typically covers the no. 1s he has had more than his fair share of plays and exposure- nothing like trial by fire- and because of it he is developing quickly. look for him to be a superstar in a year or two.

Punting with 3 mins left
jethro_tull replied to Livinginthepast's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
the defense smacked a three-and-out on the patriots in the final minutes (2) weeks ago. they were playing well enough today to do it as well- but consider gailey's decision- it really was a toss up- BUT- either way the offense would have had to make some plays and score a TD- not necessarily a confidence inspiring proposition. put yourself in the coaches running shoes- which decision gives you the most confidence- or should it be said- the least amount of lack of confidence. -
brian billick would take the job. so would mike martz gailey ain't great but he ain't the source of the bills no. 1 problem- lack of an NFL starting QB. wanny ain't great either but he would suffice if there was more talent at LB and DB.

Positives/negatives from today. What are yours?

Brad Smith's bomb. Even though it was an INT he has an arm. Fitz could only dream of making such a throw. -
the problem is next year isn't going to be any better. they should have drafted a QB this draft and brought him into the system to start next season. there were too many holes on this team and still are. LBs who we thought might contribute (shepperd, moats, barnett) are OK but very average. without a stout back 3 this team is going nowhere. partly coaching too, but the lack of talent at QB and LB is killing this team.

I found this on another site and tend to agree- he's a better Fitz than Fitz. anello1960 12:28 PM 12/31/2010 OK everybody, flame away but the Bills should go after Kyle Orton who is a free agent next year. Tebow is taking the helm in Denver and Orton will be looking to move on if possible. He's a good cold weather passer having played at Iowa and then in Chicago before being traded to Denver in the Cutler deal. He is certainly not a franchise QB that can carry a team but he is a significant upgrade to Fitzpatrick. The Bills could have their cake and eat it with this deal- drafting where need aligns with available player depth and not risking a much coveted pick on a risky QB prospect. There are NO solid picks at QB in this years draft once you look beyond Luck. The free agent pool is also severely devoid of high level talent. Rationale: Orton had significantly more passing yards at Denver than Fitzpatrick (3653 vs. 3000). Orton had fewer TDs (20 vs. 23) but also fewer INTs (9 vs. 15). Orton had a higher passer rating (87.5 vs. 81.8). These stats alone do not complete the picture because Denver was / is a much more dysfunctional team than the Bills, especially on offensive line, where Orton was sacked 34 times vs only 24 for Fitzpatrick. I admire Fitzpatrick and I believe he played his heart out this year. However, Orton played better under more adverse conditions. He would be that much better next season playing for the Bills. The Bills will be better if they draft per the other glaring needs and not have to go through another season settling on Fitzpatrick or risking a pick on a mid level rookie QB.

Go To Camp and see for Yourself,Edwards is WAY BETTER!
jethro_tull replied to Driffill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Roch. D & C correspondent embedded at SJF has repeatedly mentioned how non-existent the passing game is. His take is that all three top Bills QBs are equal. The observation is that the passing game (long and short) is anemic from equal measures of passer inaccuracy, defensive pressure and receivers that are not capable of getting open. -
2010 Bills: Better out of the box?
jethro_tull replied to Jerry Jabber's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
no one is over rating anything, especially the merits of the 3-4 defense the article from RF365 just mentioned that out of three teams that used it for the first time last year, one had modest improvement in the defense statistically and two had outstanding improvement. there are many pieces of the puzzle that make a defense successful but the point of the article seemed to be that a switch to the 3-4 scheme is not necessarily a step backward that the defense must recover from and to cancel the idea that a horrible season for the Bills in 2010 is a given because of all of the changes. -
2010 Bills: Better out of the box?
jethro_tull replied to Jerry Jabber's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The front seven appears to be in good hands with George Edwards, Schobel's departure will be absorbed. The secondary will be fine. The OL will be mended and less injury prone. The running game will be upgraded. That leaves QB- Option 1) Trent. We know him. We don't love him. Option 2) An unproven. More growing pains. Although the QB options can be managed via a great game plan / offense, when it comes to moving the chains the QB needs to get it done. The Bills will be MUCH better out of the box if Brohm can step up as a legit NFL starter. -
I can't help it. I'm really pumped for this season.

I'm excited for the season to start and do not expect miracles but I do believe they will improve upon last year's record. The folks looking for a bottom feeding power ranking might consider that a miracle.... -
2010 Bills: Better out of the box?
jethro_tull replied to Jerry Jabber's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The article refutes the idea of a transition year based on recent history of Bills coaching changes, the horrible offensive fiasco with Van Pelt at the beginning of last year and that teams do well if not really well in their first year of the 3-4. Add in the idea of less injuries and this really could be the surprise year. there is a little kool aid here but I gotta hand it to the RF365 trolls on this one. -
I record the c2c shows on an MP3 recorder so I'll have to give this a listen. *Does anyone recall an NFL Sunday in the early 80's where all of the favorites won the early and late games except one national game that was running late? I forget which teams were playing but all other games were over, and the network switched to this one. It was late in the 4th quarter and the favorite was losing but moving the ball and in field goal position. Bear in mind that a field goal would have meant that every favorite would have covered the point spread for that Sunday (I don't know the history on this but I bet it is quite rare). On other words, the people that finance bets would have had to come up with significant amounts of their own cash because of such unbalanced results. Well anyway, the "favorite" team was on the opponents 35 or so, less than 2min left. All of a sudden, the zebras got into the act big time, calling 3 penalties in a row against this team. before you knew it, they were back near their own 20 yard line and time ran out, canceling an all favorites against the spread day.

transient- contemplating and doing are mutually exclusive- why can't he commit?
-
Would it ever be possible for a player to just speak English and not vague mumbo jumbo? Schobel is hurting the team and depleting his trade value. Why couldn't he have been above board and talked about this before now? A player that supports his current team to the best of his abilities is doing himself a favor. Good luck Aaron. You were good but not great.

The defensive backs are having a strong OTA camp so far. I would hesitate to say that maybe they got so good by practicing with the Bills quarterbacks? But seriously, even though it is very early, signs are not so good for the QB squad, but we all probably knew that anyway. Brohm playing with the first team is not a good sign. Neither are all of the INTs.

What does he expect when the city / area has no idea how to attract businesses through tax and other incentives because the state and local governments rape them and the people because they can (and need to) to keep their own jobs.

Yahoo! sports article on Gailey and the pistol offense
jethro_tull replied to Fingon's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This Pistol has (2) runners in formation, a HB and a FB as a blocker. The Bills will keep Lynch (and always wanted to) because he is the only RB on the team who can fulfill the blocking assignments of the Pistol. -
Nix/Gailey killed Lynch to the 'hawks for a 3rd
jethro_tull replied to a topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Bills sincerely want to keep Lynch- He is the only RB that can block- Jackson cannot. Even if McIntyre could block, his presence on the field would tip the defense because he is not considered an actual offensive running threat. The reason the Bills need a blocking RB is that the "Pistol" formation (which Gailey pioneered and employed at KC because his QB was a third stringer) shows a HB and FB in the formation just in front of the QB. The FB is a designated pass blocker. Lynch is the only back on the team that could fulfill the blocking assignments of the Pistol. -

It helps to picture sports broadcaster Dick Enberg making a play call referring to the Bill's line- "Lots of penetration by the Bill's "Concrete Pythons" on that play!" "The Bill's "Stone Ponies" have kept Edwards off the ground all day!" -

Absolutely agree. Another example is poor roster management. If this article about Parrish is any indication, the sky is the limit for this team under Gailey. http://www.buffalobills.com/news/article-3...19-187e704d88ff

This article about Roscoe Parrish offers a fair amount of insight about how Gailey will bring out the best in his players. It is quite an encouraging peek at the future. http://www.buffalobills.com/news/article-3...19-187e704d88ff
