A low-round draft pick gets the encouragement that an NFL team thinks he's got a chance, and the realization that he'd better be working his butt off to make his lifetime dream come true. Most draft picks do make either the final roster or the practice squad (which can be a ticket to a roster slot somewhere else) but not all do. So they have the carrot and the stick both dangling in front of them. A UFA just feels desperate. The carrot feels a long way away.

Ray Davis's real name is Re’Mahn Walter Zhamar Jamar Davis. The center we drafted is named Sedrick Van Pan-Granger. The center's jersey will probably be wide enough for all the letters but the RB will probably have to use two lines if he wants it all there.

If there's a center out there that looks like he could develop into a starter, I think the Bills will take him. Note -- I just typed that and then saw they drafted a center. That name of his though -- doesn't sound like someone who likes to get muddy.

Live 2024 NFL Draft thread - Round 1 (Do NOT tip the Bills pick)

Under the CBA, do first round picks get paid more than second round picks? -
Live 2024 NFL Draft thread - Round 1 (Do NOT tip the Bills pick)
Utah John replied to Simon's topic in The Stadium Wall
I'm guessing the Bills wanted either Worthy or Legette, and figured one of them would be available at 32. Worthy is very fast but not all speed guys turn into great receivers. -
Well if the Bills could have two Allens at QB last year, why not let the Broncos have two Wilsons? RW is still a viable QB but is not nearly as good as he used to be. I think being around him will help ZW settle in, learn the position, see what works and what doesn't, and turn out to be a reliable backup QB. ZW certainly has a good arm, he just has no clue how to read defenses or respond to pressure. These are things he can learn by watching, which is what he should have been able to do if the Jets had a brain (similar to what the Chiefs did with Mahomes as a rookie).

Anyone who thinks they could play or coach at this level should watch J. T. O'Sullivan's video. The degree of expertise, on-field adjustments in the blink of an eye, and athletic ability that all players have to have, is amazing. Even if you played HS or college ball, watch that video and tell me you could do what those guys do. The only job I could have with the Bills is as a third-level minion. No way I have the knowledge or expertise to balance all the factors that go into Beane's everyday decisions. You know, at the college level, there often are male cheerleaders, or at least there used to be. Ronald Reagan did that. Back then he was quite the hound, and getting to be on a team with the pretty girls on campus was just what he would have wanted.

Would the pass have to be completed to my team? I'd probably have better luck throwing to a defender.

The Bills should sign kicker Jake Bates from the UFL
Utah John replied to LeGOATski's topic in The Stadium Wall
I think Beane is having to deal with so many holes on his roster, that if he thinks he has a good enough guy in any position, he's not thinking about changing. Bass has turned into Bass-not-so-matic and it's a concern for us, but getting Beane to worry about the PK as well as WRs, safeties, edge rushers, whether we actually have a competent center, additional RB depth, etc -- at some point you just have to go with what you've got and hope for the best. I suspect that's where Beane's head is these days. -
Best examples of failed 1st rounders who revived their careers?

OJ Simpson. Not on a new team of course but he was considered a near-bust until Lou Saban came back. -
Von Miller IG story about Beane trading up for a WR

How about we include Von in a trade to move up? -
NFL Opens 3rd Helmet Design to All Teams
Utah John replied to Warriorspikes51's topic in The Stadium Wall
Well the one thing we can agree on is that the NFL is genius when it comes to finding ways to make money. New unis, new helmets will just bring in cash, and also doing this in April is a great way to re-energize interest prior to the draft. -

Agree about the all-reds or all-blues. They look like pajamas. -
What I suspect will happen is that Beane will package this years's first rounder, the second rounder next year we got for Diggs (the pick is from the Vikes who will likely suck so it will be nearly a first rounder) plus Elam, to get high enough to replace Diggs with the guy Beane really wants. That would be almost three first rounders to move up to maybe the mid-teens in the first round. I think if Beane has a trade partner ready to take that deal, he'll wait to see if the player he wants is available, and then he'll pull the string.

Jax Josh Allen Gets $141.25M & $76.5M GTD
Utah John replied to Draconator's topic in The Stadium Wall
None of us who realize there are two Josh Allens playing would be worried about it. It's interesting that LB Josh Allen isn't very far behind QB Josh Allen in annual salary. But QB Josh Allen will likely have a much longer career. LB s wear out quicker. -
Who is the best #14 in Bills history?
Utah John replied to Royale with Cheese's topic in The Stadium Wall
The most dominant WR in Bills history was Andre Reed. (How old are you anyway to say Diggs was better?) Diggs was excellent too but for only four seasons, but he's the best 14 on the Bills. I'd love to say Reich but he was actually a backup, a good one, but not even a starter. And Fitz was the guy we had to replace to get to the playoffs. -
The one thing the Buffalo media were wrong about wrt Diggs was that they said over and over he couldn't be traded because of the cap hit. Well, that was a sensible opinion but it was wrong.

Beane assembled the team that was poised to win the Super Bowl in the 13 seconds season. It isn't his fault the coaches choked. And that team was not built at the expense of the future. There were very few expensive rental players, people whose contracts stuck around long after they left. The only real exception to that rule was the Von Miller signing, which McDermott insisted on because of, you guessed it, the 13 second debacle, where McD implied the reason for the loss was the lack of a pass rushing closer. It's very common in today's NFL for mediocre teams to bump along season after season, occasionally making the playoffs but not going very far, and then slipping back into mediocrity. Beane has kept the Bills in a position to win, year after year. This past year, when the Bills got the #2 seed in the AFC, was actually a down year. Think about that and then try to recall the drought years. Did you forget Kincaid? And really we can't compare the 2024 roster to any others, until we see what the 2024 roster actually turns out to be.
-
Absolutely not. We should never again use two first round picks for any player except Josh's eventual replacement, ten years from now. But what COULD happen is Beane using this year's first, and the 2025 second he got for Diggs, to move up. This would mean basically trading Diggs to select a better Diggs replacement than he would have received before the trade. But as the OP said it would take a lot of breaks from other teams to leave a top WR available in a spot Beane could reach.
-
I could kinda sorta get behind this trade if it came with a pick in this year's draft, when there are all those good receivers to be had. But not until next year? Boy this year is going to be a struggle.

I haven't seen any of the Josh hate you referred to, but last season was not a good one for Josh. True, he had some great games, particularly late in the season, but early on, he had some real stinkers. Since the Bills were on national TV so often, people saw those early games and put Josh into the reject category, and there he stayed the rest of the season despite his great play later. As others have said, he needs to be more consistent when the plays are there to be made, and still be the wrecking ball we know he can be, when the situation calls for it.
