10/6/2024 - Bills at Texans 2nd half game thread.
Utah John replied to BuffaloBill's topic in The Stadium Wall
The problem is the O line. And the WRs. And the TEs can't catch (although Kincaid did get robbed). And the play calling. And the blocking scheme which worked until the Texans adjusted. And and and... -

Second game in a row the Bills D looks confused. I think the opponents have figured out how to attack the zone. Boy, the Texans look like the Bills on offense. -

Maybe the bad things people say about the Texans' run defense are true. I don't care if Josh gets 200 yards passing, rushing is the way to go. -
10/6/24 GAMEDAY Week 5 Bills at Texans PREGAME THREAD

Not trying to be unoptimistic, but the main thing for the Bills is to win the AFCE. And the only competition is the Jets. So today's loss to the Vikings is even more important than the Bills outcome against the Texans. With the loss to the Ravens, it's unlikely the Bills get the one seed. And the defense is still shredded, and the offense has no separators at WR. So let's hope for a nice season but I'm not dreaming about the SB this year. That said, go Bills. They have a fairly strong team and should do reasonably well this year. Now let's get a win today and put more distance between us and the Jets. Allen could have taken the short pass on second down but thought Mack could get open. Silly Josh. On third down he could have run for it. -
Concerned that Joe Brady may have crashed back to reality.

Even though the Texans have two great pass rushers, I'm more concerned about the banged up secondary trying to stop Collilns than I am about the offense scoring points. -
Not seeing anything about Billy Shaw's passing on the NFL.com site. Don't they usually post an article when a HOFer passes? But, he was a guard, possibly the least well-known position. But, he never played a down in the NFL. But, it's the Bills. But, he was a great guy, not lawbreaking scum. But, it was Larry Felser who lobbied for years to get Shaw inducted, and he's not around anymore. So I'm not holding my breath.

Allen named AFC offensive player of the month!

Maybe the league has decided to position Josh to win an MVP. Finally. It takes a while for the MVP choice to settle in but once it does it's hard to dislodge it. It was clear by the 3/4 point of last season that Jackson was going to be MVP, as long as he didn't totally screw up, and he never did that. Darnold and Josh became friends when both worked with Jordan Palmer in one off-season. I think they shared a house in California. Wouldn't it be a kick in the pants if Darnold steps in and swipes Josh's MVP award? -
It's the guy smoking a cigarette on the X-Files. God doesn't really care, as long as the Cowboys lose.

Very strange timing. But the Bills are using the opportunity to bring in a beefy DT from another team's practice squad, and that might be a blessing in the long run. Also Miller loses four games of pay -- does that money go back to the Bills' salary cap for this year? When Miller is allowed to return, someone else will need to be released from the 53. Might be the end for Andreesen.

I thought there should have been a penalty for roughing the passer on that play. Which was a stupid thing to call during the only point in the game where it looked like the Bills could come back. The last time the Bills played the Ravens in Baltimore, the Ravens took a big lead and the Bills came back to win. The Ravens also collapsed against the Cowboys, barely holding on to win that game. If the Bills had been able to come back from THAT deficit last night, it would have broken the back of the Ravens. As it was, one stupid trick play completely ended the Bills' chances.

This was exactly my worry. McGovern had been tried at center in Dallas and things did not go well. But, horses for courses -- the Bills need different things from their center, and McGovern has what they need. I was worried that the departures and injuries would result in a down year for the Bills. So happy to be wrong.

Marino always had the tools, but he also had the Kelly-Thomas-Reed-Smith-Talley-Bennett Bills to contend with. It was Marino's bad luck that he was at his best when the Bills were at THEIR best. There have been five glory periods for the Bills. Kemp/Saban OJ/Saban Fergie/Knox All-Stars mentioned above/Levy Now Four times out of 54 years that the Bills were seriously competitive for an NFL championship, after the first great team won the AFL twice, and really only the last two where they actually had all the pieces to go all the way. Beane has once again assembled the players McD needed, and look what's on the shelf waiting to come back: Milano, Johnson, Bernard Yeah, surprisingly to me since I thought this would be a down year, the Bills have what they need. Injuries and McD's playoff brain farts are the only thing that can stop them.

How are we feeling about the next 3 weeks?
Utah John replied to GASabresIUFan's topic in The Stadium Wall
After the TNF blowout of Miami, an announcer asked Josh about upcoming games. He said immediately, Monday night against the Jags. That's all. Not looking ahead, just at the next game. There is time after each game to prepare for the next one. So we fans might be looking ahead but I hope the Bills aren't. The only game on their schedule right now is against the Ravens on SNF. -
Agreed. I checked their historical records and the Jags are 12-7 against the Browns all time, so it's not like Cleveland has Jacksonville's number. Maybe the odds guys figure Lawrence and Watson are both meh and so the Browns running game should make it close.
-
Thurman Thomas also played his last year in Miami, and I remember him getting a first down against the Bills and jumping up to emphatically signal the FD. He too was bitter about being let go (the same day as Bruce Smith and Andre Reed were, right after the Music City debacle). Thurman got over it, returned to Buffalo and is once again revered. I don't think Poyer is coming back to Buffalo long term, since I think he and his wife like the climate and the social activities in southern Florida too much. But just like Thurman, we'll look back at Poyer with respect and affection long after the memory of last night's game has faded.

‘Offensive line (4.5). Blocking was beautiful on Cook’s 49-yard touchdown run. Spencer Brown and O’Cyrus Torrence double-teamed Da’Shawn Hand, and Connor McGovern made a power solo block on Brandon Pili to seal a big lane for Cook. Torrence had a couple nice solo blocks, too. The Bills barely needed to throw. But the pass protection by Brown against outstanding linebacker Jaelan Phillips was good, and Dion Dawkins was a powerhouse on the other side. Alec Anderson is showing his feistiness, as the Bills used him as a third tackle on eight plays. He had good knockdown blocks on defensive ends Quintin Bell and Calais Campbell in the second half.’ You know what I like best about this? It's that except for Phillips who is quite good, and Campbell who used to be very good years ago, I have never heard of any of these guys before, nor did I even hear their names during the game. To me this screams that Miami has totally botched their salary cap, paying for QB, WR1, and WR2 and a team full of mostly JAGs. (Achane is a real find, however.) Also that the Bills O line dominated said JAGs.

Also, the Bills pulled off this defensive plan on a very short week curtailed by a travel day. OTOH I assume McDermott and staff had worked up and installed defensive plans for this game, knowing that the schedule put them in a bind. I like the Cookie name, bringing back a Bills name from my youth. I apologize in advance if this causes any problems from a jinx perspective, but after two games I don't recall a single drop by a Bills receiver. Please correct me if that's not right. Also, I NEVER remember the Bills going through a game and getting only a single penalty, like they did against Miami. Kryptonite for the Bills. Just like the Bills are kryptonite for the Dolphins.
-
I believe that the rule is that the home markets for both teams always gets local TV coverage, but the national broadcast can go to a restricted service. I don't like it that there are two MNF games on the same night.
-
There was absolutely no reason for the offense to try to go from second gear to third gear, let alone fourth or fifth. For one thing, why show the rest of the league more than necessary? For another thing, why subject players to injury? For another thing, it's pretty low-class to pour it on when the other team is waving a white flag and is losing by an insurmountable difference. Not only low-class, but the Bills do need to play the Dolphins again this year. It's one thing for the Dolphins to tell each other, we got whooped so we need to play better, but everyone knows they lost because they aren't that good, and so the team just expects another loss. It's another thing if the Bills embarrassed them by putting up 50. Even a Tua-less Dolphins team would play like lions especially if the Bills are cruising toward the playoffs, and the Dolphins could hurt our seeding.
-
The Bills are kryptonite for the Dolphins. BUT The Jaguars are kryptonite for the Bills. Let's get through the next game and see where we stand. Who knows who else will come out of a Jags game injured?
-
1. He slipped causing the kick to go awry. 2. The defender might have tipped it but only because it wasn't going straight to begin with. 3. I'm not getting down on him until I see him miss a kick under normal conditions, when the field isn't so slippery. (There were multiple players slipping all through the game)
-
The Dolphins like the Bills got ripped apart by the salary cap. The Dolphins unlike the Bills put way too much money into QB, WR1, and WR2 and they have JAGs at far too many positions. The Bills unlike the Dolphins know WTF they're doing.

Maybe it's time to wake up and realize Beane knows what he's doing. Mitch Morse was playing great and was a key part of the O line, but he reached 30 and was too expensive considering the salary cap. So the Bills took a huge risk moving McGovern to center and starting Edwards at LG. I thought this would diminish performance at both C and LG, but geez look at the holes Cook was running through, and look at the time Josh had to pass. That risk has paid off. Beane's extended Brown, and now has future players at C and LT on the roster, developing, and on their cheap rookie contracts. Unless injuries hit, the Bills look better than just solid up front, for years to come. All through Josh's prime years (as in, now and for a few more), the O line should be very strong. I still think 2025 should see a better team than 2024 but I have to admit the 2024 team looks really really good. Yeah, the Bills got killed on the statistics. I'll take that all year long.

Week 2 - Bills at Fins - 2nd half game thread

Ohhh thanks for that. I thought maybe we had ANOTHER key defense injury.
