It is a performance based business, but not performance on the field. Rather it's how it performs financially that matters. For example, how long has it been since the Bills have been more than a mediocre team? Yet they continue to sell large numbers of season tickets, merchandise, and have a rabid cult-like following that is seemingly in no way tied to on field performance. As long as the Bills are in Buffalo they will be financially successful.

What you are referring to I think is a team with a winning history. They are used to winning, and to making decisions that allow them to continue to win both now and years from now. A win now mentality has the stink of desperation to it that forces teams to gamble their future in a generally reckless manner. That's the difference I think.

To me it means not thinking at all about anything but the next/current season. For example, give up whatever future draft picks you have to in order to get players you think can give you a winning season now. Also commonly referred to as mortgaging the future. It is shortsighted by it's very definition and stupid. But desperate coaches and front office people might fall into this hole if they figure their jobs may be on the line. I don't get the feeling the Bills are in this mode despite some recent decisions the past few seasons.

You can remove the drunken part as well. A lot of people go for the event, with or without drinking. They just truly enjoy the experience regardless of the quality of the play.

And as a matter of fact, I record it and strip out the 2 hours of commercials as well and watch it when I want to. If that is somehow on topic. Absolutely, as is the guy setting the price for his recording. And whether or not the NFL pays it, or tells him to F off is up to them.

The casual fan is going to be bored by that game. They want offense which they can get excited about. Three plays, even three well done defensive plays, and a punt not so much. It was on TV where I was, but I honestly didn't pay much attention. I am happy though that Manning can now go out on top. More and more people seem to be just casual fans of football anymore.

My thought is to make the game as safe as possible would require getting rid of the helmet and all pads, except for the cup. But it wouldn't be anywhere near the same game, or nearly as popular, if the players weren't using their bodies as weapons at full speed.
