Why would a recruit from California fly to Boise via Buffalo? (There are direct flights from San Francisco.) -

Aside: RG3 can throw. He looked poor today in the passing game, but that was very likely because of his hosed knee as well. As a fan of the game, I hope he comes back fully from this injury.

Bills hire Doug Marrone to be Head Coach

I like the decisive move. Hopefully, he can put together a first class staff given the pool of coaching free agents out there. Let him focus on being a HC. -

Deciphering OBD Code - Two Tidbits to Ponder
Sisyphean Bills replied to Dr. Trooth's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
What I'm trying to illuminate is a bit more nuanced than simply falling back on the "unquestionable" assertion that Buddy has added talent. I'm not even interested in stirring that pot; it's been done in another thread at awesome length already. The point is that Whaley and Brandon could fall in love with Coach X. Coach X has all kinds of brilliant ideas, blah, blah, blah. However, Coach X's core philosophy to building a championship team does NOT align with Buddy's philosophy. Coach X would like to change the approach to suit what he wants. In other words, when he does his due diligence before taking the job, he feels strongly that certain aspects of the team are not just plug-n-play with a minor tweak here or there as you put it. Brandon has the authority to remove Buddy, that's clear. On the other hand, would Brandon use that authority to get "his guy"? It's possible but not clear that Brandon would lower the hammer on Nix to hire Coach X. On the one hand, if Coach X is "the guy" and Nix is sort of looking to pass the baton anyway... on the other hand, if Coach X is just "one of many" and Nix is that unequaled talent evaluator that Brandon said he was... -
Russ Brandon named President/CEO

I wonder how long Brandon knew about this transition before it was finalized. Regardless, to go off half-cocked and start firing everybody willy-nilly would be a great way to convince Ralph that he had made a horrible mistake and turned his enterprise over to a nutbag. -
Deciphering OBD Code - Two Tidbits to Ponder

Are there coaches out there that do not think along the same lines as Buddy Nix as far as how to construct a football team? Well, I for one certainly hope so. His results have been abysmal and his implementation fickle. If you were a coach in the 2013 NFL, would you sign up for a "let's move ahead in super slo mo" leadership direction? Chan Gailey did. As far as Whaley, if he's as hip and on top of things as many hope to assume he is, then why fear that an A-list head coach would want him gone? If he's the cat's pajamas of 2013 NFL talent evaluation, he should be able to blow the candidate's socks off and be part of the sale -- the coach wants to come to work in Buffalo because Whaley is all over it. As far as Reid, are we really already shortening the list of candidates based on Buffalo inferiority? Isn't the notion that Ralph Wilson is no longer in the driver's seat at least worth a few hours where one might fantasize that the Bills could actually be considered something other than an NFL farm team? -

Here is a scenario. What if the choice comes down to hiring an A-list coach, but that coach wants his own guy helping him evaluate talent for what he is trying to implement? Does Russ stick with his comments today that Buddy Nix is fully in control of all things personnel wise, or is an alternative path forward found to sign the A-list coach? Based on the last trip on this merry-go-round, working with Buddy Nix wasn't a high priority for several potential candidates, namely those that refused to even interview. Replacing Chan Gailey with yet another Rich Kotite type coach is just going to be another example of the Bills blowing hot air without any implementation. -

Wondering? It was fast-talking Buddy. He's effectively done. -
Buffalo Bills fire Head Coach Chan Gailey
Sisyphean Bills replied to scribo's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The question begging to be asked is whether firing the entire coaching staff sounds like a "Nix move" or not. Does a strong GM, one still in the driver's seat, active in the operation really advocate firing the entire staff? You raise a good point though. With Nix still actively out in the field doing scouting, this is perhaps a really bad time to part company with him. Keeping him through the draft and allowing him to bow out into retirement, would be a better strategic move by the team. Finally, if they hire a strong head coach and give him control of the football operation (like an Andy Reid position), whether Nix is the nominal GM of football or not, then keeping him more prevents someone like, say Miami, hiring him on a short term contract to pick his brain on what the Bills plans could be. -

Everything else around him is going up in smoke. GM gets fired. OC fired(?). DC might not be back. ST coach retiring. QB situation is a total reset...
