Mike McCarthy is the head coach of the Green Bay Packers. Ralph needs to go out and hire some management consultants that can come in and evaluate his organization from top to bottom and recommend to him steps it will take to put things together in a way that can be successful in the NFL circa 2009. It's almost inconceivable that he'll actually spend the money to do that. It's a much better bet that he approaches it the same old business-as-usual way: he'll have a talk with the cronies and hangers on; may call a few friends on the phone that he trusts; and, get out the blindfold and spin the wheel.

21-10 != .588 winning percentage. For fun, I looked up the Marty Schottenheimer coaching tree. Here is the list: Herman Edwards, Wade Phillips, Marvin Lewis, Ken Whisenhunt, Jack Del Río, Mike Smith, Mike McCarthy, Dom Capers, Chan Gailey, Jim Haslett, Dick LeBeau, Mike Mularkey, Tony Dungy, Rod Marinelli, Lovie Smith, Mike Tomlin, and Lane Kiffin. Here's the Dick Jauron coaching tree: .

Our "ProBowl" tackle said all that needs to be said.

Well, if we're going to keep a proven loser head coach, Ralph might as well squeeze all the blood out of the turnip and throw away any players with any sort of demonstrated talent. Wahoo! Detroit Lions here we come! And obviously you don't understand the NFL. -

It's comical that with all these protests about not having enough talent for Dick Jauron to be successful, the one player that the Buffalo Bills developed in-house into a stud player is the guy that everyone lines up to say "fug him, he sucks". I haven't seen a single post that said, "Wow, we actually have a Pro Bowler on this team. That's cool! Congratulations, Jason." The guy is ridiculously underpaid for one of the elite LTs in the game today and people want to run him out of town on a rail because he took the only option available to him to protest his contract -- he held out. As if that hold out were the only thing that separates the Buffalo Bills from being a great team. Edit: OK, there are a few posts that aren't "throw him under the bus." -
DJ should not have to apologize

I kind of thought Walker's attempt at a tackle, or whatever the hell that was, was pretty bizarre. At least, Duke Preston didn't step on his member diving to make the tackle -- although his attempt sucked moose stones. (That's right, even after Losman fugged up, various Buffalo Bills had chances to make plays and screwed the pooch.) FWIW, I agree that DJ doesn't have to apologize. He is who we thought he was. Time to turn the page. -

No, not me. (Hence the face.) But there are plenty of posts that say this team is much improved over what it was under Donahoe. -

I can see being confused. The Bills just caved the Jets in for yet another 5 yards and the Jets called a time out. Aught oh! Mangini must be up to something! WTF should we do now? Crud! We didn't run the ball so good in that game 2 months ago when we didn't even try to run the ball. The clock is going to stop again for the 2 minute warning. Gee whiz. WTF should we do? Panic button? Yeah! Let's do something Mangini will never suspect! We'll roll out and throw to our pure scrub fullback! Hot dog, that'll show 'em who wears the headset! -

Well, to summarize the argument, because Jauron's 6 or 7 wins are better than a rookie HC, like say Mularkey, who could get 9. Say nothing of the notion that the Bills now have far more talent than we did under Donahoe. -

What are the chances that the Jets, who were getting gashed badly, would mysteriously conjure up a ginn to stop the Bills running game that had softened them up and run over them all day? -

Speaking of brilliant calls... There was that play call when Chris Chandler, towards the end of his concussion filled career, was told to tuck the ball and QB sneak it into the line. He ducked his head, leaned into the line behind Olin and promptly got nailed by the MLB diving over the pile in a helmet to helmet blow. It was a matter of inches and Olin is one of the best C to ever play the game -- so it was a book smart play, one could postulate. But, Chandler went out like a light and the Bears season was over as Henry Burris was the only healthy "QB" (being generous) on the roster. Quiz time: who was the head coach that made that call? -
Start McKelvin over Greer no matter?
Sisyphean Bills replied to scribo's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I was going to say that, but I thought being specific might drive the point home easier. In a couple years and if it is business as usual, the Bills starting CBs will be McKelvin and Corner (Youboty could be anchoring the IR list) and the Bills will be back at the 1st round CB feed trough. -
A combination of things....duh?

Why 6 years? Did you just roll a 6-sided die or something? -
Brian Billick and Mike Nolan

Interesting point. Maybe Ralph could somehow get them to coach without actually hiring them. Think of all the coin saved! Somebody call Littmann. -

Greer could be a good pickup for the Patriots this off-season. -

Actually, I remember Tom Donahoe saying in an interview that he had encouraged Gregg to blow it up rather than transition things slowly. The irony was that during the time between Phillips and Williams, Donahoe had re-worked several defensive players contracts, players that were then let go, which of course made the cap situation worse, which of course then became the excuse why the team sucked. -
Dick "Kotite" Jauron hired the coaching staff. Dick Kotite has had a large involvement in shaping the systems the team runs and the players brought in to implement those systems. Yet you think the answer is to keep the continuity with Dick Kotite so that he can fix things this off-season? Why didn't he fix thee things in one of the last 3 off-seasons and especially this last off-season when he was talking about leading the Bills to the playoffs? Rod Marinelli is a great guy and an excellent football coach. Think the Lions are going to keep him?

You upgrade your organization anytime you get a chance, if you want to compete for championships. Players, coaches, scouts, front office ... it doesn't matter when. -

Lack of talent on this team
Sisyphean Bills replied to TheBlackMamba's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Say nothing of the knee-jerk response, "Well, one can't have stars at every position." Like that somehow justifies having NO stars on the team or even having starters that aren't NFL caliber players. -
Continuity isn't a goal unto itself. What did continuity get the Detriot Lions when they stuck with Matt Millen for 8 years? Sure changing things might bring about more suckitude. We've seen that; we're Bills fans after all. But, the surest way to guarantee more suckitude is to cling to what is proven to not work from angst over the unknown, fears that making a change equates to another bad decision making process and won't pay off again. One has to have a bit of courage and the conviction that he can make the right decisions in order to achieve greatness. Great success rarely meets up with those that are timid and otiose.

How do people know that when Peters "misses an obvious block" that the stellar C (who know, the genius that hiked the ball up his own butt) made the correct line call? -
"Mort" at it once again

Bledsoe had a pretty good year behind a patchwork line and then they traded Peerless Price, got rid of Larry Centers, and Jay Riemersma. With a patchwork line (standard for Buffalo) and a severe shortage of legit weapons, Bledsoe didn't look nearly so good; yet, the team improved to 9-7 the following year. Even with that, he was a veteran QB and could've been a decent caretaker while the offense was rebuilt around him. Instead they cut him and rolled the dice with Losman and Holcomb. That train wreck led to a 5 win season and blowing up the team.
