How is a 7 year deal a "stop gap"? The average cost was ~7M/year for the Dockery deal and by walking early the Bills end up paying an even higher rate than that, over 10M/yr. The verdict on the Dockery move is in. It was nothing but a fug up of titanic proportions.

Well finding someplace to stash the 8th overall pick and a foundational piece of your franchise would be a nice move.

Indeed. When they signed him, they were (hopefully) trying to build towards the Martz system under Fairchild, so at that time he was a good option. They somehow went for "continuity" and promoted a WCO guy who appears to be sending the offense as you say 180 degrees from their original heading. We are not treading water.

Just glad he's gone. He held this team back for the past decade. Like the Patriots proved last year, the only thing important to winning in this league is having an experienced superstar QB.

Royal and Dockery. Well, the "Marv built a great corps" camp seems to be really facing a tough sell more and more.

Dockery was paid like a superstar but was in fact a limited player. He wasn't getting better and he was not what they needed if Schonert really is set in bringing to Buffalo a WCO variant as the base offense. BTW, just having some cap space doesn't imply that all the elite free agents are going to sign with a team mired in mediocrity. And, yes, it is yet another hole to fill going into another off-season. Same old dog doing the same old tricks, in that regard.

Maybe they are thinking the leadership angle. Unfortunately, bringing in a leader from another team does not translate into having a leader in your own clubhouse. Leadership isn't as simple as flipping a light switch and suddenly it is there.

Hmm. The Bills scored more points in 08 than they ever have under Jauron. Of course, they played every single bottom feeder defense in the NFL save Detroit. Not that Dick is wrong. The points total still sucked and was barely ahead of teams like the Seahawks, which had a QB with a bad back, no running game, and about 10,000 WRs on IR.
