The 3-4 Defense is Here

UDFAs are the cheapest option. -
I like it. I think they'll be successful with Schobel and Maybin dropping into coverage and the pass rush coming from Stroud and Williams. Solves the lack of pass rush problems and improves the coverage in the middle of the field all in one go.

One glaring need that everyone is overlooking
Sisyphean Bills replied to Stussy109's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I guess I'll count you as a convert then. The line you bolded in my post said "recent years." The offense in recent years has been poor on average. The year with Bledsoe, Price, Moulds, Riemersma, Centers, etc. was an anolomy. That offense was dismantled the next season. Lee Evans really hasn't posted impressive numbers other than the one year with JP Losman as the starter. The point remains uncontradicted that the Bills haven't developed much in the way of WR talent recently. Moulds and Price were drafted by John Butler, last millenium. After that, you got Lee Evans and then guys like Josh Reed, Roscoe Parrish, and James Hardy. -
Yeah, Vick avoids sacks. http://www.nfl.com/players/michaelvick/car...ts?id=VIC311467 If we're serious about it, we should sign Marcus Vick. He's got a nice rap sheet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcus_Vick

Bills will be making a major move at QB

Nice tautology. We either have a good QB or we don't. -

Not really buying this. Our front couldn't stop anybody playing a 1-gap and now you want us to believe they can flip a switch and be solid in a 2-gap scheme. Guys that played their entire lives as 1-techniques and 3-techniques will be 5-techniques overnight. Uh, sure. Let's hope the talent that we have is that versatile if we do make the change. Otherwise, our rebuilding process took on yet another dimension. -

You can find a WR in a variety of ways. That is different than saying it is a position that is easy to assess. I meant the former, but probably wasn't clear enough. Take Demaryius Thomas for example. He's a good WR on a team that runs the ball most of the time. Will he be a great Pro? Can he adapt to a Pro offense? I think so, but only time will tell. Using the Bills as a frame of reference would probably lead one to the conclusion that finding great football players at nearly any position is impossible. A team that has missed the playoffs 33 years out of 50 has a lot of lean years to look at. Part of the problem for the Bills in recent years is lack of a plan. The Bills have gone from the shake-n-bake offense of Flutie, to smash-mouth, to West Coast, to Killdrive, to Loads of Mularkey, to Air Martz, back to West Coast, to No Huddle (and I probably missed a half-dozen or more) ... with all the changes, how the !@#$ is a scout supposed to find WRs that actually fit the offense? There is no offense, so the task is an exercise in futility. -

You're a virgin, eh? Gil Brandt has been saying it for the past 50 years or so. Of course, you do have to find guys that can play the position, but you can find them all over the map. Andre Reed, 4th round. Wes Welker, undrafted. Steve Largent, 4th round. John Stallworth, 4th round. Steve Smith, 3rd round. Drew Pearson, free agent. Ray Berry, 20th round. Bob Hayes, 7th round. Terrell Owens, 3rd round. Miles Austin, free agent. Those are Hall-of-Famers and other damn good players (Austin is a 1 year wonder at this point, but he eclipsed a 1st round pick on the field and capably replaced the production of Owens). Obviously, there are the Jerry Rice and Tim Brown 1st round success stories, but being an elite WR isn't highly correlated to draft position. See Darius Hayward-Bey. BTW, with the shift in focus from the running game to the passing game, one could argue that RB is becoming the new commodity position and that WR is becoming much more in demand. (I wouldn't necessarily disagree even.) The deal with WR though is that there is a wide-range of body types and athletes that can be highly successful at the position. There have been slow guys, quick guys, world-class sprinters, big guys, tiny guys, smart guys, some "not-so-bright" guys, ... a lot has to do with the player's internal make-up and drive to succeed as well as the team as a whole. -

Does Buffalo have a budding porn industry? Might be hard for Merriman's girlfriend to continue her career as a mattress test pilot. -

Doesn't anyone else get the sense of where there is smoke there is fire with Chambers? The guy was traded/dumped twice mid-season from 2007 to 2009. Since WR is a need and probably the easiest position in football to fill and given all the other needs on offense and a total rebuild on defense, the Bills should definitely be spending some UDFA "picks" on some prospects to bring into camp. -
James Hardy and Shawn Nelson

Excuses don't win games. And they don't keep coaches employed. Hardy needs to get on with it or take up basketball. -

Comparisons to Paup at his best are ridiculous. Paup's big sack numbers came when he had Bruce Smith and Reggie White lining up opposite him. You know, the all-time NFL leaders in sacks, two of the most dominant and greatest players ever. Moving to the here and now, Kevin Williams doesn't hold Bruce Smith's jock. -
James Hardy and Shawn Nelson
Sisyphean Bills replied to HumbleAndHungry's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Hardy was dismal before he got hurt. Defenses shifted their entire scheme to the inside and to Evans out of a total lack of respect for his game. They could put a backup on him man-on-man and shut him down completely. That's worse than useless. Hopefully, the kid has taken mega-leaps forward, but who'd know with him buried on the bench? -
OTOH, the Bills have drafted RTs (he's big!) in the top 5 before...

Creating even more needs and holes to fill. I like it. Seems like a sound strategy. -
Does the move to the 3-4
Sisyphean Bills replied to John from Riverside's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Hopefully, they aren't switching the defense in order to save Maybin's career. I see no reason to believe that Maybin can play effectively in space as an OLB or that he can carry the load as a joker, the team's designated every down pass rusher. -
Matthews has Lost his mind
Sisyphean Bills replied to Dr. Trooth's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It's sort of an eyeful to read a projection that so-and-so will be a franchise guy at the next level directly followed by a list of excuses why so-and-so was NOT a franchise guy at the last level. Just draft the best damn football player you can find at #9 at let the rest take care of itself. -
Terrence Cody a "Sloppy" 370 Pounds at Senior Bowl
Sisyphean Bills replied to Thurman#1's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'll type it slower, so a mouth breather such as yourself can follow along. In pass rush drills at the senior bowl practice, Cody looked like a tub of goo and not an elite pass rusher. That's not real surprising, now is it, since even his coaches at Alabama took him off the field on passing downs. If my opinion offends you then tough ****. In other drills, he wasn't bad. He's a two down, space eating, NT and will probably be a good one in a 3-4 at the NFL level. -
Don't count out Trent Edwards
Sisyphean Bills replied to Mikie2times's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not to mention that neither Favre nor Young was ever "run off" a team. They were both traded from teams because they had value. Edwards problem is he has about as much leadership as a piece of bellybutton lint. -
Nix Gets Nice Slam On "Whitey"....

"Better" in what way? I can see that it makes the franchise look like it is run with a dash of premature pompous buffoonery with the drive-by blasting of bystanders. Where did you come up with this nugget of "net wizdem"? -
Clancy Pendergast finally free from Chiefs
Sisyphean Bills replied to Preston Ridlehuber's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Seeing what Bates did in Tampa this year, where he hosed the defense changing it from a Tampa-2, hiring him would be about as productive as shooting oneself in the foot. -
Never heard of it. On the bright side, Gump was fast. In another newsflash: I hear James Hardy is tall.

I agree completely. In fact, I've posted several times that the Bills are in an image crisis. Their image is so poor that it deeply hampers their abilities to correct things (including probably who they could attract to the GM job). Image is a powerful reason that Mike Shanahan types would think that the Redskins "want to win more" than the Bills, for example. In truth, the Redskins have been at least as dysfunctional as the Bills and arguably more so.
