Were Bills interested in Tebow?
Sisyphean Bills replied to mpl6876's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not really. The denials are in and of themselves suspicious because they are overreactions and completely unnecessary. Then you have the reports at the time that "Bills officials were angry." Not laughing, but downright pissed, when the Broncos pulled off a deal. It could be that only Schefter had his eyes open (or was experiencing a hallucination from a night of partying) and only he saw this and he told everyone else at MSG about it, of course, to further his agenda against the poor Buffalo Bills. Due diligence doesn't mean planning one and only one option, nor does it have anything to do with whether or not the Bills tried to downplay/deny their true interest in Tebow or not. To the contrary, you don't wine and dine a job candidate that you have zero interest in in any business. It would be a waste of everyone's valuable time and most businesses would have trouble justifying burning money like that. So, it speaks against your POV to believe hook-line-and-sinker in the fallible Mr. Wilson's post-draft explanation that the Bills never had any interest in Tebow. The fallible Mr. Wilson has made many mistakes in recent years, has tasted the lash of public appraisal, and it would be absolutely no surprise whatsoever if he was a wee bit sensitive to anything he feels might be too critical of his baby. Al Davis has very publicly had a number of such moments in recent years; is it really impossible to believe Ralph could to? -

Of course, nobody said Schefter was infallible. -

OK. Fair enough. Flip it around though and ask why bother with the testy denial at all? Indeed, as the reporter said, it is rather bizarre that an NFL owner comes right out guns blazing to criticize another organization's performance in the draft. -

1. Can you show the percentage of times that Schefter makes **** up out of thin air? 2. Can you prove that all the other reporters on the scene were riding Schefter's coattails with pure regurgitation and making no effort of their own, even those working for other networks? -

I'm not sure who you mean by "pundits", but the guys covering the draft for NFL Network were definitely not mad/angry/annoyed when they said "Bills officials" were angry. BTW, when one is looking at someone, they don't have to say anything in order for it to be clear that they are steamed, assuming one has any sort of social situation recognition skills. Maybe you mean the Bills officials are their own pundits. -

The salt in the wound, for some, is that most NFL media types said as much when Levy was announced as GM. In fact, Chris Mortensen has had a lynch mob tailing him ever since. -

I actually watched the video. Schein clearly addresses things that have happened this current off-season in his monologue. Technically, that is the past as well, but it is the current regime and the actions that they have taken and it is part of his prognostication. Of course, it is a guess like any other prediction of the future, even guesses filled with pure optimism and fueled by hope and wishful thinking.

Stewart ended up playing for Dick Jauron in Chicago, that's what happened to him. -

That'd be the definition of a BPA draft. Take the best players and build a team around them. The downside is that you may get worse initially, but if the players truly are special, then you have a chance to lay a solid foundation and to continue to build from there. What's the point of pulling a Dick Levy success story, and improving a team that went 9-7 and 5-11 to 7-9 and 6-10? -

The knock on Pete Carroll from his first round at the rodeo was that he was a push-over and let the players get away with far too much. Obviously, it is an admission that a mistake was made with respect to the trade; but, for the long term, Carroll had to set the tone that he is really in control of his team and what his expectations are for his players. -

The one point that doesn't make sense with regard to Wilson's comment is that why would reporters at the draft say "Bills officials" were fuming and angry immediately after Tebow was selected? (Baseless conspiracy theories aside.) From Wilson's comment, you'd think the "officials" would be giggling like little school girls at faking out the Broncos. -

My guess is that there is truth to both sides of this and that the brass wasn't united on the "Tebow question". First, Nix has said he wasn't interested in making trades, preferring to let the draft come to him, and wasn't interested in Tebow. Given the way the draft played out, that seems accurate. On the other hand, reporters were saying on camera at the time that Bills officials were obviously upset when the Broncos took Tebow. Tebow would obviously have been another "big splash" sort of marketing move just like T.O. was last year. The Bills haven't shied away from such ploys in the past and seeing as many of the same people were employed by the Bills then and now, it doesn't really sound far fetched at all. -

Ah, not that you are ever serious about anything, but I never said Dick Jauron wasn't a nice person. Nice people are not always successful in every endeavor they undertake. Dick Jauron was a failure as an NFL head coach. It's really not that hard to understand. One has to actually go out of their way to conflate the concepts. -
To put that in perspective, more organizations have won Super Bowls than gone without a playoff appearance in that time. But, yeah, the Bills went 7-9! Yippee !@#$ing ki yeah!

Melodramatic much? Armageddon ... The fact is that the Bills are going in a totally new direction in all phases. What the records under Jauron were doesn't portend a damn thing about the new direction and the results it will yield ultimately. To dumb it down to but one example: there is no reason whatsoever to assume Chris Kelsay is going to be a great OLB in the 3-4 in the NFL. Yet, there it is. -

Red herring. Owens contract ran out. Edwards' did not. Might not want to count your chicks before the eggs are laid. Edwards will be facing a 3-4 defense throughout, so he'll need to shake his deer-in-the-headlights QB play against that devilish scheme if he hopes to not get cut outright. -

The Bills are in too big of a hole to climb out of and to fly straight to the top of the mountain all in one jump. While there are encouraging signs, not every issue will be solved with a snap of the fingers. This year will be about getting the new systems installed and evaluating which players fit them, and some won't. Next off-season (or maybe the next if there is a lockout), more gaps will hopefully be filled without the self-imposed backsliding of recent years. -

I see your point on the similarities between Brees and Edwards. It's like calling black, white.
