  1. I'm trying to figure out if the idea is that it ruined Peyton Manning football wise or financially to have stayed at Tennessee through his senior year. Must have been both.
  2. It's a team game. Having a great QB all by himself isn't enough. He can't block for himself, he can't catch his own passes, he can't pound the rock in the 4th quarter, he isn't going to play special teams, and he isn't going to stop anyone on defense. The Chargers look like this formula a bit so far this year. Arizona is probably a decent example of the reverse, where they have very good talent and a dismal QB situation (although Max Hall played well enough). Minnesota has struggled with Favre sucking so far this year. The Panthers and Bills are good examples of expansion teams.
  3. The Bills OL sucks. Remind me. Didn't McShay have a football woody for Aaron Maybin?
  4. The saddest part about this thread is the conclusion the Bills will have the first pick.
  5. Marv did say that. He also said that they had McCargo rated the same as Ngata.
  6. He was hired June 6, 2001. That's after the draft. http://throwback.buffalobills.com/news/news.jsp?news_id=4763 http://www.onlineathens.com/stories/060601/spo_0606010061.shtml Announced on the 7th... http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1P2-22362258.html Fired by the Eagles on May 8th... http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1P1-44068459.html
  7. It's just the standard nonsense. It's not the fault of the guys still here. For the guys here, whatever happened in other places that was good was their doing and the failures weren't, etc. Modrak's best years were when he was just another cog in the Steelers machine. Since then, he has been involved in whatever capacity with approximately 100 draft picks and netted one household name player, Donovan McNabb, and a number of big-time busts.
  8. Lawyer Milloy is still making plays.
  9. Did you hear the comment that the interest in the trade was one-way and the Seahawks were the ones that kept calling Nix? And yet some homers persist that Nix was actively shopping Lynch.
  10. It would be very, very interesting to see Modrak's boards. The suspicion is that his ratings basically give all the name players (Kiper Hypers) virtually the same score, which in essence leaves whoever makes the final decision hung out to dry. It also gives him his wiggle room to claim that he would have selected Rookie of the Year so-and-so after the fact.
  11. On Modrak's history, here is a recap of the drafts he has been involved with regardless of team. I'll start with the 2008 class. 2008: 10 picks - Steve Johnson, Leodis McKelvin, Demetrius Bell 2007: 7 picks - Posluszny (Lynch, Edwards gone) 2006: 9 picks - Kyle Williams, Keith Ellison, Donte Whitner 2005: 6 picks - Roscoe "Fear the Snow" 2004: 6 picks - Lee Evans 2003: 8 picks - Terrence McGee (top pick McGahee) 2002: 10 picks - Justin Bannan/Ravens, Josh Reed, Denney (top pick Mike Williams) In Philadelphia for 4 years. 2001: 6 picks - some depth late in Correll Buckhalter, AJ Feeley 2000: 7 picks - not much, Corey Simon 1999: 10 picks - Donovan McNabb and not much else 1998: 8 picks - William Thomas and Jeremiah Trotter and not much else In Pittsburgh was in charge of college scouting for 9 years. 1997: 8 picks - Chad Scott was the top pick, not much (Vrabel went to Patriots to have a career) (Daryl Porter was the guy that didn't stay in his lane for the Music City Miracle) 1996: 9 picks - Earl Holmes, Jamain Stephens was the top pick, not much 1995: 10 picks - Mark Bruener, Kordell Stewart, Brendan Stai 1994: 10 picks - Buckner, Gildon, (Jim Miller went to Bears), another WR strike out 1993: 10 picks - Chad Brown, Deon Figures was top pick (Alex Van Pelt Bills) 1992: 14 picks - Searcy, Kirkland, Steed 1991: 12 picks - Ernie Mills, Huey Richardson was top pick 1990: 13 picks - Eric Green, O'Donnell, Barry Foster, Strzelczyk 1989: 13 picks - Carnell Lake (Tim Worley was top pick) Faneca, Ward, Joey Porter, Plaxico Burress, Marvel Smith, Casey Hampton, Kendrell Bell were all added in the years Modrak was in Philadelphia. Despite all the experience, one might make the argument that the last time Modrak was really (part of) hitting drafts out of the park was back in the early 90's when the Steelers were using ample stockpiles of draft picks to select some core players for their franchise. He did have some part of a role in Donovan McNabb and there were a few other solid picks in 4 years at Philadelphia. In Buffalo, the record while he's been part of it has been very weak with 1 Pro Bowler on the team out of 56 picks. One of the very best talent evaluators in the business? The results suggest that is a stretch, particularly since he left Pittsburgh. It's disturbing that one of the common defenses of Modrak is that "he would have drafted so-and-so". This is a common refrain with respect to Modrak, that after the draft is done and there is a good body of evidence on the record, there is always some report that Modrak would have selected various Pro Bowl players. WTF is wrong with him that he doesn't push all these great picks more convincingly, if that is the truth? It sounds more like cover-your-ass blame ducking, but if it is true then how is it that the guys pulling the trigger are always focused on busts while Modrak supposedly is forced to stand in the corner with a dunce cap and mumble the names of future franchise cornerstone players to himself?!?
  12. 2001 was before Modrak was hired by the Bills.
  13. Who'd want their team to be the winningest in the NFL?
  14. How about a Buffalo that looks like a Nike swoosh with a grin?
  15. They can always try him as a TE or DE if he can't play QB.
  16. Of course, there is never a guarantee; but, a team must take chances otherwise it will never really get better. (Corollary: a team isn't going to win a Super Bowl with a roster full of Chris Kelsays.) Such is life.
  17. Reminds one of drafting a RB who'd just had his leg snapped in half with their 1st round pick in Gregg Williams make or break year.

  19. Sorry, I've read some other posts that suggested that if they would only line Maybin up further outside or standing up, then he'd be fine. I confused your post with just another one of those from the first line. OK, so you want Maybin to run a stunt. You realize that you can't run a stunt every time, right? Now, Maybin isn't going to overpower anyone, so the DE/DT would have to occupy blockers and carry at least the G to the outside as well as pinching the LT. Let's ignore that one of our problems is that we have smaller, quicker d-lineman (Tampa-2) trying rather unsuccessfully to 2-gap in the first place for a minute. Maybin's quick first step would be negated completely as he'd have to loop back around to the inside. There, if things go well, he'd be able to come through cleanly and get his first sack. On the down side, he gets tossed on his back by the RB. The next time, he'd probably have to overpower the C or G and end up on the ground.
  20. What about the incompetent ones?
  21. Not sure this is much of a defense as it isn't accurate. I've seen Maybin lined up (OK, yes, hand on the ground, which actually helps him with his quick first step, that's why sprinters get in a stance, btw) more than a yard outside the LT. He's quick off the ball, but then it's basically over. This is the NFL, not Coastal Carolina. NFL lineman know how to move their feet and how to work angles. As soon as they get a hand on him, he's done. He'll start wiggling around like a fish on a hook, turn his back to the play, or just get tossed on the ground. The guy is so "athletic" he's not even being asked to play special teams anymore. There is still a chance; but, Maybin fans need to brace themselves because the overwhelming evidence is that this kid is a bust and his NFL career is all but over.
  22. Should've spent 3 or 4 years in the Arena League...
  23. It would be easier to pull another Cousineau, really. Draft some dude, go back to bed, and let him sign with some team in the CFL.
