Tom Modrak went to (IIRC) 5 Missouri games last year to scout personally. Also recall that Ralph said he was going to have the scouts really look at college QBs early in the season when Trent started out laying eggs. Now, Modrak may have been there for the ambiance and hot dogs, he may have been scouting Gabbert, or he could have been scouting some other Big 1X players the Bills never had any intention of picking and didn't.

And/Or, maybe the Mannings just thought a franchise owned by a guy who underwent seven way heart bypass surgery and chemo for cancer wasn't exactly the most stable prospective situation. Not to mention AJ Smith can be a real pain in the *** when he wants to be.

This thread reminds me of the thread back in the day hoping that the Patriots would trade Tom Brady to the Bills because they had Drew Bledsoe. Anyway, the Bills are mathematically eliminated from the race for the #1 overall now...

Maybin wouldn't have carried the Bills on his back into the playoffs. Regardless of his sack numbers with the Jets, Maybin is still a single down specialist and one trick pony. His opportunities to get on the field playing for a team playing from behind all the time would be quite limited. How many threads have there been about the Bills never blitzing? Contrast that to the Jets that use blitzes in obvious passing situations all the time in order to get their speed rushers free and unblocked. He's had some success with the Jets in a very specific role and a situation that has utilized his only asset and that, from all indications, wasn't going to happen in Buffalo. Besides, Shawne Merriman was going to stay healthy and carry the Bills defense at the same position. PS: That doesn't mean Maybin could not have been a bit of depth on a team with none and utilized (maybe even constructively) especially after Merriman succumbed to his annual season ender.

Well, no, not really. Not that the Bills have the right personnel, mind you; but, the issues with this defense go beyond bad players.
