  1. Unfortunately, the Bills recent past is full of picks that fit the mold of "guys we think we can develop into something special". It hasn't been a sound strategy and the results prove it.
  2. To eliminate the last 50%, maybe the returner could wear flags. Simple physics: larger bodies running faster... Hmm, maybe if they made a rule that the kick-off coverage and return teams had to be manned with guys that weighed 125 pounds or less. Or maybe they could tie their legs together with hobbles so the best they could do was a quick, stumbling walk at one another.
  3. Are you trying to confuse the rant? Next thing we know you'll be posting about how the rules keep being changed to favor the offense as evidenced by increased total scoring over time.
  4. The guy was set for life.
  5. He's a huge success because he signed that initial contract and got all that money.
  6. Maybe he read about the negative correlation between Wonderlic scores and the performance of defensive backs and decided to blow the bottom off the curve intentionally?
  7. One might want to consider that the football brass of a team is far more motivated to get a 1st round pick, regardless of position, on the field and producing. It's likely ownership is going to get perturbed paying the big bucks to wasted top picks.
  8. BTW, Chip Kelly ran the Ducks offense before he got the HC job.
  9. Another system would be for the owner to plead his case to a jury about how impoverished he is, how much of a burden it all is, how he needs to feed his family, etc. and how much money he would save if he had a later pick. The jury could then give the higher pick to the owner they dislike the most and so on down the line.
  10. That may be true. It is not a given. There is no reason a professional scout cannot post on this site. Just sayin'. Matt Millen was paid to be a GM. In fact, he was the highest paid GM in the NFL. Anyway, what were the criteria for evaluation of the "bet" angle? If Matt's Bag says that he'd have selected some set of players and Buddy selected some other set -- we'll have unimpeachable evidence as to whether Buddy "got it right" but the choices Matt's Bag makes would be totally uncertain ... assuming they are not drafted by the exact same team other than the Bills. Anyway, just curious... interesting thread by the way.
  11. It was meant in levity.
  12. Listening to the fans ... wasn't there some Marv Levy quote about that.
  13. There is this new thing called an internal combustion engine too. (Totally agreed.)
  14. True. Understanding your market is one thing, but the cynic would note it's not the same as building a championship contending team. (BTW, I'm the one that's been saying for a decade they need a pass rush... )
  15. Have you googled around for a board that's about bashing "The Others" because they hold/write viewpoints you don't like? This board is for discussing football and the Buffalo Bills.
  16. I don't know. Rex Ryan was able to quickly identify that Aaron Maybin had a single skill -- rushing the passer from the outside -- and that skill would be maximized in a scheme that tried to overload the zone from which he was rushing.
  17. Truth. Goes hand in hand with the comments that the better DCs simplify things and let the players play. Some coaches coach from their play book; other coaches look at their players and design the schemes to the strength of the talent and let them play that way.
  18. It would really be something if those sorts of days were in the rearview mirror...
  19. (BTW, I wouldn't entirely fault Edwards on this. He wasn't the one that decided Shawne Merriman was more than enough.)
  20. You misunderstand me. I'm not saying they can't get by without the best LT in the NFL on the roster. They showed last year that Gailey knows how to coach around weaknesses. But, you said a LT has no impact. That isn't a good argument. Having a great LT may not be essential, but having one does have an impact and would let the Bills run a more varied offense. Think of it this way: would you rather constantly coach around a weakness or be able to design plays knowing you had a strength in that spot? Again, there is really no comparison when you look at it that way. Still, if you are of the opinion that the Bills did not fill all of their holes with Mario Williams and that there are other priorities besides LT then you may also have a good point...
  21. Bingo. Which is in stark contrast to some suggestions that Wannstedt-in-charge means the Bills would be rolling with the exotic blitz of the minute club... True. Pretty weak group overall.
  22. Wouldn't having a guy that could pass block and run block and stay healthy and anchor the edge of the line without needing help have an impact? There really is no question about it.
  23. Thanks for narrowing it down there, buddy.
  24. Not only that, but Merriman at Sam is about as "innovative" as Spencer Johnson playing Will.
