Pressure on Gailey and the Coaching Staff
Sisyphean Bills replied to CSBill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It's only been 12 years. -
This is true. The general consensus around here anyway was that Gailey could not possibly do any worse than Jauron had done. It was "inconceivable"! Yet, that is exactly what happened. Twice. I don't buy that it was Wilson's call, actually. Marty believes in a single leader model and he is not going to sit in the back seat and let his fate be decided by others. This caused problems in San Diego, problems that Nix saw for himself.

The point is that there are plenty of examples where a regime change has very much reinvigorated a team and turned a struggling team into a good team immediately. In another thread, there were comparisons between the 49ers and Bills, for instance. Jim Harbaugh has coached 17 regular season games for what was a bad 49ers team and they are now being considered one of the elite teams in the NFL. It might be interesting to compare the Redskins and Seahawks to the Bills after this season plays out to see where each is after 3 years as well.

The GM had the initials Marv Levy. (As far as I know, Brandon was not hospitalized when Marv was hired.) He was on NFL Radio after he took the GM job and said it was going to be really, really hard to turn things around in Buffalo. While there is no doubt this is factually true, would it not be better to visualize being on top of the mountain than wondering how the hell you're ever going to climb it? Nix entered the job with proclamations that played well with those wanting to hear "stay the course" music. "Call me crazy, but I don't think we're that far away."

It's a "win now" league. A franchise has to hit the ground in a full-out sprint and turn the culture around on a dime. Not just because of impatience from ownership but because of free agency. Players know they are lucky to play out a couple of contracts and if they are serious about wanting to win, why sign your second contract with a team going nowhere, with no national exposure, etc.? Maybe if the team overpays heavily and winning championships is secondary to filling the bank account. When your GM takes the job and says things like he doesn't know how long it will take, because it is going to be very, very hard to turn it around, he's already hedging against success in his own mind.

I haven't heard anyone claiming the Chiefs are any great shakes this past week; nor was I making such a baseless claim. I was commenting on the fact that many analysts are picking the Chiefs over the Bills (the Chiefs are 6.5 point favorites I believe) and how a team -- the Subpar Mario led Bills -- that was hyped as a dark horse only one week ago fell so far, so fast in most of these same people's opinions.
-
I can agree with that. On the other hand, the point of the draft is to build a team by finding the right pieces for your team. So, "acing the exam" and drafting the guys that seem right based on the common consensus isn't the real goal. "Acing the exam" seemed to be what the Modrak era was all about. "Everybody" thought Mike Williams was the best OT prospect. "Everybody" thought JP Losman was a late 1st round talent. "Everybody" thought Aaron Maybin was a 1st round talent. "Everybody" thought McKelvin was the best CB prospect. On the other hand, there was the Donte Whitner pick on which the Bills went against the grain a bit. Ironically perhaps, it could be easily argued that Whitner, though he never lived up to where he was drafted, was the best player of all those listed. So, "the reach" was the best player and the group-think consensus "right picks" were disasters.
-
Exactly. Analysts do watch (at least some of) the games and the Bills have been (nearly?) universally written off after one week because of how they played. Basically, this was a team that played so poorly they went from being a dark horse pick for the playoffs to a chump that the lowly Chiefs might be able to kick around based on their play. The Bills need to get a ton better everywhere and very quickly.

Equipment Manager fired after 35 years?

Must've finally found those photos of the execs. -
Who would really believe a Baghdad Buffalo Bob announcing "All is well!" like a broken record? I didn't read it that Subpar Mario was getting killed because he doesn't watch TV. It seemed more to me that Sullivan was underscoring the feebleness of the argument. Williams said he doesn't watch TV but also immediately complained about the officiating, then Gailey changed his story and said the secondary play hurt the pass rush, then someone leaked that his wrist was injured, and explicitly stated "I appreciate everybody pointing the fingers." So, Mario unequivocally knows he played subpar and that a mob of critics have been blasting him (and not just on TV). So the defense of "I don't watch TV" is lame. That's not what anyone should expect out of a team leader. Man up.

You realize though that every player has his fan club, right? Scouting needs to determine what the player's weaknesses are (all players have those) as well as their strengths. Just because some people got wood over Aaron Maybin's first step should not have erased concerns such as he had the physique of a WR, for example.

You know what's really funny about that? Fitz was brought in as a veteran backup to Trent Edwards, not to be the starter. He was just an insurance policy should the guy they were going to build their Go-Befuddle Offense around. OK. Maybe it is not funny. Maybe we should or

Brad Smith plays the Wild Card position. Jack of all trades, master of none. The sort of guy to build a franchise around. -
Think Nix could talk Rod Marinelli into the gig? (Actually, it might not be such a bad idea. Paradoxically, the way he was able to burn the Lions completely to the ground has actually helped them turn the franchise around.)

Im bringing my paper bag this Sunday

Here's some context for you. Chiefs fans were busy tying nooses this morning and finding strong branches. But, the jabberjays on NFL Radio kept saying, "Hold up! Hold up! Not so fast. It's the Bills. That's a very winnable game." Bengals fans got the same treatment in fact. Adam Schein even congratulated a Bengals fan for his impending victory! -

Let me put it another way as well. The Bills are 1-9 in their last ten games. The offense has laid eggs like a chicken coop. How many NFL defensive coordinators do you figure are "utterly mystified" by Chan's offense? Like you wrote, the fact the same coaching staff can't figure out how to get the 3rd rounder at least as "ready" as the rest of the cluster bang on display on Sunday isn't exactly a call for kudos. -

http://wgr550.com/Bu...-OL-DL/14203249 Somehow, the highest paid guy on the team shouldn't get pwned to the point of sucking. Even if there were no refs at all. Austin Howard? Who?!? http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2012/09/11/jets-rex-mario-williams-wrong-on-austin-howard/ -

If Antonio Cromartie can master Chan's offense, then it is not clear how anyone arrives at a "too complicated" conclusion.
