  1. I was just about to post the same thing. This draft is loaded with talent on the D-line. I wouldn't mind grabbing two D-lineman back to back.

The more I see of him, the more I want J.J. Watt in a Bills uniform next season. Perfect 3-4 defensive end.

  2. http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/blog/dr_saturday/post/Greg-McElroy-almost-aced-the-Wonderlic-Is-he-to?urn=ncaaf-327510

So this guy is tied with fitzy on the highest score on the wonderlic. It may just be me, but i kinda want the guy now. he will probably be open in the late rounds. I just want him because we will have the smartest QB core. HA.

    anyways, its a good read.

    I think you are joking...right?

In any case, if we were to draft McElroy, we would be able to destroy any other NFL team at Trivial Pursuit! LOL!

  3. I wouldn't take Ponder anywhere in this draft. He has a weak arm and it showed during the Senior Bowl.

While Ponder doesn't seem to have great arm strength, IMO, he makes up for it by having a silky smooth delivery, nice touch, and pretty good accuracy. I agree with many posters on this board who do not like Ponder because he doesn't appear to offer anything that we don't already have in Fitz. I think Chan really likes Ponder, however, and I have a sneaking suspicion that we will be drafting him in round 3.

  4. I think we learned today from Cam's performance is that he is a work in progress. While his timing and accuracy was way off during the short to intermediate range throws, he seemed to throw the deep ball pretty nicely. His throwing mechanics are pretty polished and thus he has nice touch on his throws. He looks uncomfortable, however, working from under center and throwing from 3 and 5 step drops (that's to be expected). His measurables are off the charts, as he is remarkably quick and agile for a man of his stature.

Morale of the story...his is who we though he is. If he is coachable and maintains a solid work ethic, he likely will be a successful NFL QB in the future. Great prospect, but IMHO, not worth the #3 overall pick in the draft.

Fairley, Dareus, or Quinn....in that order.

  5. As I posted numerous weeks ago, I don't see the fascination with Bowers. In fact, I recently saw video of Iowa's Adrian Clayborn and he and Bowers look like the exact same player to me…both really solid players, good relentlessness and all-around game, but a bit lacking in explosion.

Some see Bowers as a safe pick because he has a high floor. But if he also has a low ceiling (which IMO he does have), then the selection of a player like Bowers could be viewed as a possible bust pick…because he's the sort of player who might have a solid career and maybe make the Pro Bowl as an alternate during one or two years in his prime…but that's it.

Whoever the Bills select at #3, IMO has to have a very high ceiling. I would much rather go Quinn (because he could end up being the best player in the draft) than someone like Bowers who (along with Adrian Clayborn) remind me of another solid player, Tyson Jackson, who went 3rd overall to the Chiefs in 2009.

Tyson Jackson will be a good player but not a great player. I don't see him or Bowers or Clayborn being for instance, the next Richard Seymour, and that is minimally what I'd want from that player.

If the Bills retain their present draft position, I'm still wanting Dareus/Quinn or Quinn/Dareus.

    +1

Quinn is a special player. He can put his hand in the dirt and play 4-3 DE, and I'm pretty confident that he would excel at OLB in the 3-4. I want Quinn or Dareus at #3.

  6. I really just hope we add James Carpenter. 2nd, 3rd, 4th round, whenever. I have watched him all year and he is routinely one of the best tackles, whether its game action, at the Sr Bowl, or at the Combine, he is at the top. I dont know why other people dont like him but he is gonna be a great Olineman.

IMO...Carpenter would be a nice addition if he lasted until the 4th round. To my knowledge, the "knock" on Carpenter is that while he excels in pass blocking, he leaves much to be desired in the run blocking game. Based on his skill set and measurables, he looks to be a prototypical LT in the NFL. Might be good for depth in the event that Bell gets injured, but isn't that what Wang is for?

  7. The most recent 1st round pick that had me excited was the Eric Wood pick. I remember hearing how he was one of the nastiest centers in college football, and I was delighted to hear his name called. I also really liked Alex Mack and Kraig Urbik  from that draft class. Picks that made me nearly vomit....where do I begin? John (who the f is that?) McCargo, Maybin, and Whitner come to mind.

  8. If Cam Newton is available at #3 the Bills will draft him. As of this date there is not a defensive difference maker in the 2011 draft. There are a lot of good defensive players, but none worthy of a top 3 pick. That's why I say if available, Carolina might be thinking the same way.

I see 4-5 defensive players who could be worthy of a top 5 pick. Specifically...Fairley, Quinn, Peterson, Dareus, and Von Miller. All of these players will likely be "difference makers" at their respective positions, I only see one offensive player, however, who would be worthy of a top five pick, and that of course is Green.

I like Newton, but I don't think it's the right move for the Bills right now. We have a good quarterback already, and we desperately need to upgrade many other areas of our football team. No thanks to QB this year unless Mallett slips to the 2nd round. He would be a good developmental QB who could learn the system from Fitz while we upgrade our defense and solidify our offensive line.

  9. Congrats you found the loophole. If you build a top 3 in the history of the game defense-which holds teams to literally 10 pts per game- and had 2000 rushing yards and a special teams that scored touchdowns regularly, you don't need a future hall of famer at qb.

    Signed,

Tom Brady, peyton manning, drew brees, big ben, Aaron rodgers.

Just cause something has been done doesn't mean it's a great plan. I'm not looking for my franchise qb in the 6th. Just cause Tom Brady went there, the 15 other qbs in the top half of the NFL suggest rounds one and two are more effective. I've seen people get rich off the lottery. I'm not banking on it but that's the blind optimism I see in a few of the posters. Fitz might be able to qb a playoff team, but I'm not holding my breathe on a superbowl. It's just incredibly unlikely.

    Is he bigger? No...

    Is he stronger? No....

    Is he faster? No...

    More accurate? No....

His big strength is IQ and even that is negated by the incredible football iq of the top qbs. If you sit fitz, drew, tom and Peyton in the film room together I'm not convinced he breaks it down any better.

Why not get a guy that measures up? Just cause he's better than Trent (jp, rj, tc, avp) doesn't mean he is going to leave a mark on the game. I want that guy on our team. BAD. I want fitz to help him along, back him up, watch film with him. But 2-3 years from now I want that guy leading this team on the field.

I sense that I may have hit a nerve Saint.

IMO...there is not a QB in this draft who is worth the #3 overall pick. I want defense, defense, and then maybe an offensive tackle or a tight end. I want the biggest, nastiest MF'ers out there. Let's make Buffalo an unpleasant place to play again. We can win with our current offense and an upgraded defense.

  10. I know it's just your opinion -- but that's expecting a lot from a guy who's never hit 60% completion rate in his career. You cannot be an elite QB in this league with a sub 60% completion rate. It's getting to the point where you need to be closer to 65 than 60.

While you don't need a football God -- you need an elite QB to win the Super Bowl. That hasn't just been a trend over the past decade, it's been a fact of life in the pass-happy NFL. And Fitz just isn't an elite QB.

    You are absolutely correct.

    Signed,

    Trent Dilfer

  11. There's a guy by the name of Phil Taylor who is very similar to Haloti Ngata...both his measurables and his playing style. He may be available when the Bills pick in the 2nd round. Give up 2 first round draft picks for Ngata? Never gonna happen, and it shouldn't.

Come to think of it...when is the last time a team plucked a "franchise tagged" player off another team? I remember the last time it was being considered, and that was when San Diego gave Michael Turner the franchise tag. Turner stayed in San Diego and played behind LT until he became an UFA.

  12. In order to be a franchise player, a player must be a FA in the upcoming year. A team can lock him up by naming him the "franchise player". The following will be FAs this year:

    Brian Brohm

    John McCargo

    Paul Posluszny

    Keith Ellison

    Drayton Florence

    Ashton Youboty

    Donte Whitner

    George Wilson

    Bryan Scott

My pick would be Poz or maybe Drayton Florence.

Okay...I'm going to state the obvious here. No unrestricted free agents on our roster will be given the "franchise tag" purely because none of them deserve to be paid the average of the top five salaries at their respective position.

If I am not mistaken, we would have to pay Poz approximately 9.7 million for next season or Florence approximately 9.5 million. That's not going to happen in either case.

  13. Are you serious? I can understand why some might want to say Kyle Williams. He did have a good season and seems to be a great kid. But a franchise player is someone who were he to leave, would cripple your team severely. Peyton Manning and Marcia Brady and excellent examples. Is Kyle Williams in this category? Of course not.

Your other 4 are far too ridiculous to bother commenting on.

Bottom line is the Bills have no one worthy of a franchise tag. We all were hoping Spiller would be tag worthy when he was drafted. And who knows, maybe someday he will be. But for now the Bills are a tag-less organization.

I could understand someone wanting to hang a tag on Spiller if they firmly believed he was going to turn into something special however.

The Ravens just used the franchise tag on Haloti Ngata. Is Kyle Williams of the same caliber as Ngata...nope. Does Williams deserved to be mentioned, along with Ngata, in the same conversations about the best DT's in the NFL...yes!! If there is a player worth using the franchise tag it is Williams. If he went on the open market, I'm pretty confident that he would garner top 5 DT money.

  14. Three words:

    Follow the money.

Anyone who thinks Newton is not an NFL talent should take a good look at this endorsement. Scouting departments might make mistakes. TV commentators might make mistakes. Big corporations with the resources of Under Armor DO NOT. This contract is a virtual guarantee that Newton will be a HUUUUUUUUGE star in the NFL. He could still get hurt or possibly run into off the field problems but so can any player. Didn't Newton just have a workout for the scouts? Do you think UA was there as well? This deal proves he has immense talent that translates to the NFL. Congrats to UA for outbidding Nike.

If Denver and Carolina miss this, let's all hope that the Bills do not. We will all regret it for years.

    Git'er done Buddy!!

  15. I still feel Peterson will prove to be the best player from this draft.

    Love pick two

Put Kelvin shepard at 3, or carter if he's healthy.

Gosh....I really want to love Peterson, but all the tape I've seen where he plays against decent receivers (Jeff Fuller, Julio Jones, Justin Blackmon) he just doesn't look like a shut-down corner to me. Could it be the protection schemes that LSU likes to employ on defense (i.e., more zone coverage)....I don't know. Anyone who is really familiar with Peterson have any insight that might help me to understand his value at #3?

  16. Thanks for the link. You mentioned that the report stated that Ponder had "merely average" arm strength. Joe Montana lasted until the third round largely because he lacked a big-time arm. The point isn't that every QB with merely average arm strength is the next Joe Montana--it's that arm strength is overrated.

Since you pointed out one of the negatives the report mentioned, let's look at the positives:

    Christian Ponder, from your link.

    ************

    • Extremely smart with a high football IQ

    • Good throwing mechanics and a quick release

    • Very accurate with terrific touch and timing

    • Nice footwork and able to buy time in the pocket

    • Decent mobility and can make plays with feet

    • Is accustomed to working from under center

    • Can read a defense and go through progressions

    • Hard working, tough, mature and a team leader

    • Lots of experience against top-notch competition

    ************

"Very accurate with terrific touch and timing" makes him a significant upgrade over Fitz, at least in that one very important aspect of the game. A QB's accuracy, football intelligence, ability to read defenses, and dedication to the game are all pivotal to his success. Ponder seems to have all these traits. He has a few more question marks than Andrew Luck, which is why Luck will be taken first overall, and Ponder may last until the second round. But of the quarterbacks in this year's draft, Ponder has the best chance to be successful at the next level. Given that the Bills are very unlikely to have the first overall pick in the 2012 draft (the Andrew Luck pick), I believe Ponder represents our best opportunity to address the QB position over the next two years.

I agree with you in that having "elite" arm strength is an overrated quality when used solely to evaluate NFL QB's. Certainly, there are many more factors that play into the equation such as intelligence, accuracy, ability to read a defense, etc... I will say, however, that it is beneficial for QB's who plays in Buffalo to have at least above average arm strength. For much of the season, they will be playing in cold, windy conditions that are difficult to throw in if you don't have sufficient arm strength.

I am not completely dismissing Ponder. I like a lot of what he has to offer. I just wonder when it's -10 degrees and the swirling winds of Ralph Wilson Stadium are blowing 20-30 mph....will he still have the same "terrific touch" and accuracy? Furthermore, will he be able to throw a 15-20 yard out pattern in those conditions? There is a big difference between playing in Florida and playing in Western New York. I am just curious...what makes you think, that out of all the QB's in this draft, Ponder has the best chance to be successful at the next level?

  17. Seriously? No props to Byrd? I think he is our second best defender (however it is more so due to everyone else sucking balls instead of Jairus being that good). Its like everyone forgot he made the Pro Bowl last year as a rookie and is still very young. Although he didn't get the INT's this year he played solid, especially at the end of the year. Yes he did get burned against the run a fair amount this year but also made strong tackles as well (i.e. forced fumbles)so he was just inconsistent rather then bad and with experience he will gain that consistency. As for pass defense how many times did Byrd really get beat bad on a play? I cant recall. I dont even remember teams throwing the ball near him ever. Once a team knows you have a Pro Bowl Ballhawk back there they are not gonna throw it at him if they dont have to (which they dont because we have a terrible Run D and Pass Rush )

With that being said here is my list.....

    1. Williams

    2. Byrd

    3. Florence

    4. Wilson

    5. B Scott (no mention of him in this thread, dudes proven to be pretty solid)

    6. Moats

    7. McKelvin

    8. Donte

    9. McGee (if not for injuries woulda put him much higher)

    10. Poz (he is really bad im being generous)

    11. Carrington

    12. Troup

    13. Davis

    14. Edwards

    15. Jonhson

    16. Stroud

    17. Torbor

    18. Ayodele

    19. A piece of dog crap

    20. Maybin

    21. Any other person or living creature on the planet

    22. A defense with only 10 players

    23. Freakin Kelsay (im being generous with Kelsay too) ;)

... i too didnt add Merriman because he hasnt played yet

I don't know that I necessarily agree with your sentiment about Byrd, but your list is pretty awesome

  18. 2. Denver Broncos: Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU.

Denver has seen their defensive backs go from one of the best in the NFL, to now finding themselves in need of improvement. Champ Bailey and Brian Dawkins are both passes their prime, and don't have many years left to play at the NFL level. Their other cornerback, Perrish Cox, has found himself in legal troubles.

    Linky

Personally, I think this plays into our hands nicely.

I actually think this scenario may work against us, that is, if our goal is to trade down in the first round. The overwhelming assumption is that Fairley will go to the Panthers at #1 and Bowers will go to Denver at #2....leaving 2-3 potential "BPA" players that teams might be willing to trade up for (Peterson, Green, & possibly Newton). Denver taking Peterson at #2 just takes one of these players out of the equation. I still would be happy sticking at #3, however, and taking either Dareus or Quinn.

  19. So to get this straight. You say Ponder has average athleticism and an average arm. Yet you link a scouting website that says Ponder has above average athleticism to try and prove your point about arm strength. You're basically contradicting 50% of your argument against Ponder.

    Whatever dude.

So he may possess "above average" athleticism. What does that mean exactly? So...essentially he is more athletic than a guy like Ryan Mallett, but less athletic than a guy like Cam Newton. The same thing could be said about Fitz....big freakin deal!! My overall point here is....Ponder would not be an upgrade over Fitz, so there is no way I would draft him in rounds 1-3. I don't even think he brings a better skill set than Brian Brohm. That's my opinion.
