just catching up here. didn't know about Lori, as for me, i generally take a little time off through the first weeks of July, when there's not much going on. also, i had a wickedly busy June, so couldn't be involved all that much on this board. but i'm back drinking in my rochester hotel room, so back to normal (relatively) . jw

right, he registered sacks in eight games last year, seven of them losses. and in those losses the offense averaged 11.714 points, including the 24 points scored in the opener during which Schobel had one sack and returned an interception for a touchdown -- real invisible performance there. be careful when you use stats, because there are many others to disprove your point. jw

well, if i'm not mistaken, i think the poster was simply suggesting that you stay there. jw

no problem. i do think there's a good chance he is coming back. though, this is Aaron Schobel we're talking about it. he marches to his own drummer (and that's not entirely a bad thing). jw

Schobel is now 70/30 on playing this year

i'm a part-time drinker, still working on maintaining my amateur status in the event the nutjobs on the Olympic committee finally come to their senses and add "binging" as a sport. and with the next Olympics in London, i can't see how they've missed this opportunity yet AGAIN! g--dam elitist tea-totlers, with their fancy suits and knitted socks. feh! as to you, sir, i agree. i've hardly ever believed anything i've read -- on the intrawebs or in Penthouse for that matter -- though the tales have been certainly juicy. ... sorry, where was i going with this? oh yeah, nyah, nyah: conjecture that. jw -
with all due respect. that's not what he told me. he said the plan is to have his family move up here, because he doesn't want to travel back and forth to Texas to see them. also, one of the reasons he wants to make the decision by mid-August is because that's when his children start school, and he wants to make sure he can get them back into the same school they attended in the Buffalo-area. he has no intention of traveling back and forth to see his family because he's starting to realize that would wear him out, so the plan is for the family to move up here. jw

the apology quote is from my piece. he really is apologetic about going back and forth. i do believe him when he says he was "done playing" a month ago, as he told me. but as time went on, he got the itch again ... something that wasn't there all offseason. and believe me, Schobel is not a guy who wants to go out there and fall flat on his face -- if he elects to come back. that's one of the things he's worried about. jw -
it's not, from what i can gather. just completed a quick search of this nutjob's recent posts, and he/she is as racist as they (it?) come. it's mostly bile and hatred and ignorance spewing baloney. really sad and embarrassing to have someone like this posting this nonsense. some truly lack a sense of shame. jw

Troy Smith More than a Backup

at the rate you're going, i'm starting to question whether the Bills should draft Locker next year, never mind make a move to trade for Smith. jw -

this, i believe, might apply to one or two posters here, eh? jw and why are we revisiting this Troy Smith discussion again. bring back Rob Johnson and that'll settle it. -

Michael jordan disappointed in LeBron

i generally concur. i mean, as little as i saw the raptors play, i always wondered why bosh was so hyped on a team that really didn't do much. then again, he's relatively young, but his challenge is figuring out where he fits in with the heat. and i think that could very well be a big challenge. jw -

and yet, using the same logic, Trent Edwards' has a better completion percentage and thrown fewer interceptions in his first three years in Buffalo than, say, Doug Flutie did in his three seasons in Buffalo. Flute does have the edge in the fact he played more games over that span and threw more touchdowns. jw -
Michael jordan disappointed in LeBron

i don't care how many games they won the following season. they haven't won a championship without him. as for potential places he could've gone, how about: Utah. The Lakers with Magic. Seattle as a few choice destinations. heck, the Knicks were still good at that point, too. or Philly for that matter. the point is, Jordan stayed and allowed the team to be built around him. LeBron left to form what could either be a super team or a "super ego" team, which remains to be seen. Jordan put the Bulls on the map, and upon his departure, they are still regarded as the team "Jordan played for." jw -

waitaminute. the Bulls weren't on the NBA radar before Jordan got there. chicago, though a major market, was not regarded as "a destination" as NYC, Boston, Philly or LA were. that said, Detroit wasn't an attractive market, either, and yet proved it could build a winner. Jordan was on the fence about leaving Chicago until Jerry Krause elected to break up the team as I recall. that's what led to the breakup. Jordan, Scottie and Phil had indicated they'd stay for one more year until Jerry got involved. the Bulls -- sans Jordan -- have not been the same since. and the Bulls have been relative afterthoughts as NBA powerhouses go. the talent around Jordan was good, but it was Jordan's team. and as he noted, he didn't need to coax Magic or Bird to come join him. with all due respect, that's the point here, isn't it? jw -

i covered Jordan in his latter years with the Bulls, and he was one of the most competitive athletes i've watched play. he could single-handily take over a game, be it the regular season, with very little on the line, or in the clutch during the playoffs. he had a sense of being on the stage and grabbing the spotlight with his performance. i did not see this in LeBron, particularly in this year's playoffs. if only the Cavs got him a point guard, and yet who knows if that would have made the ultimate difference given LeBron's lapses of indifference. i personally think LeBron's decision is a reflection of the huge sense of entitlement that predominates in society these days. he took the easy way out in a bid to win a title, and doesn't see anything wrong with that. it makes a mockery out of sport and legacy. and it's good to see the old guard -- Jordan and Barkley -- calling out LeBron for how it went down. and anyone who buys this "he took less money" shtick has lost all concept of perspective. jw -
Bills sign Carrington to 4-year deal

essentially, most third-round draft picks have traditionally signed four-year deals. i believe, under the terms of the CBA, he still wouldn't be eligible for unrestricted free agency until after his 5th year (i could be wrong here, but it's my first day back from vacation, so bear with me.) and keep in mind, no one's stopping the bills from re-structuring the deal at some point or cutting him. jw -

Ralph isn't cheap!
Delete This Account replied to Buffalonian-at-Heart's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
oh, it must be THAT time of the year again, when the quarter-annual "Ralph is/isn't Cheap" discussion begins, because we're inbetween, pick one: the end of the season/ free agency; coaching firings/hirings; the end of minicamps/start of training camps; monday/tuesday. this is well trod ground in which no one is going to convince anyone of anything differently. trust me, i've tried. and there's no point getting all bunched up over it in frustration by posting one point, only to have it challenged, and then defending said point and then on and on and on and on and on. so, to cut to the chase, and save plenty of time, i will end with this: I respectfully agree to disagree with Mr. WEO. jw -

Third-rounder's not a big deal, though it gets another pick out of the way. There's no telling on Troup and Spiller, and particularly Spiller given the difficulty the Bills have had in getting their first-rounders signed of late, especially those in the No. 8-12 slots. See Maybin and Whitner, who both missed extensive time. (McKelvin missed two days while Lynch missed one day, two practices.) jw -
