All 32 teams announce they are underdogs
Delete This Account replied to EC-Bills's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
oh, well, i guess that's certainly up for debate. i'm curious, then, why this website elected to report this, though i credit them for doing the legwork to pull this piece together. jw -
Most Over Rated Band of All Time?
Delete This Account replied to truth on hold's topic in Off the Wall Archives
that's a great list and position. you did forget Chilliwack (British Columbia). i'm not sure it works with "Buffalo Tom," though the band, i believe, was from Boston. in the same vein, all band(s) named The Replacements are legendarily good. jw -

what, in god's name, are you complaining about. who's not listening to what? it's clearly evident that this site has done it's homework on this issue. jw -
ummmm, they're called predictions, based on observations, history and an evaluation of talent. in other words, they are "expectations," not facts or guarantees. given that, a boneheaded prediction would in fact entail someone in an objective position to project the Bills making the Super Bowl this season. that's not to say it's not possible, but it's very unlikely. now that we're at Week 1, my prediction is 6-10. jw

damn, you're right. me and my attempts to remain objective. ok, here's a start: i can't see the Bills making the Super Bowl this year. jw -
ah, yes. another go at the Ralph is Cheap/Bad Owner post. well-covered ground. this thread is about Modrak, and i've made my points, but you intend to take it to another level. fine. the turnover of staff does have something to do with accountability, and yet you fail to see both sides of the equation while making these sweeping generalizations. there have been mis-steps, many of them, along the way, and Mr. Wilson is not blame-less. as i've noted on numerous occasions, people have been put in positions with the freedom to do their jobs. i'm specifically referring to Tom Donahoe, Russ Brandon, Jim Overdorf and Dick Jauron. they were given wide-ranging freedom to build this team in the ways they saw fit. in many ways, they are due much of the credit/blame for what's gone on. but you're beginning to argue my point that Tom Modrak, though not blameless, isn't the one at fault. after all, weren't you the one originally emphasizing this point before going off on this new tangent of blaming Mr. Wilson. you can't have it both ways, can you? in fact, there appears to be a growing consensus that maybe, just maybe, the Bills might be turning a positive corner with Buddy Nix and Chan Gailey in charge. that, of course, remains to be seen. however, if that's the case, who then gets credit for making that decision: the fans, who wanted Cowher or Shanahan? just wondering, because your scattershot approach is proving to be a little off target, eh? jw
-
amazing you could fit all those sweeping generalizations into three graphs. but, then again, you seem to have an agenda that needs fulfilling. so off you go. i contend that Tom wasn't primarily responsible for the drafting of some higher picks, particularly Losman, Maybin and McGahee. i disagree with your suggestion that "no one is held accountable." how can that be, given the team's gone through 5 coaches in 10 years, and three GMs? who says what players Modrak has ranked, and whether the Bills have followed that board to a T? is it possible that others -- a coach in one occasion, a GM or two on a couple of others -- might have gone off that board? i say that's likely. but what the hell do i know. or maybe Nix respects Tom ... nah, couldn't be that, could it? jw

a little off-topic here, RJ. i've always wondered which RJ you are not. jw -
i don't hear people complaining about Wood, Levitre and Byrd from last season. Troup looks like he can play, too. and then there's this other guy, Spiller, is it? yes, Tom's missed some. but are those his misses alone? in fact, based on some of the players he recommended, and the Bills passed on, it's a question that has some validity. i personally do not think -- and in fact might even know -- that the Maybin and Losman picks were on Tom. and to be fair, it's apparent that Spiller was a consensus pick that included the entire front office, from Chan on up to Mr. Wilson. jw

i like Kid Rock, to a degree. he's an overblown egotist, of course, but so are a lot of artists. what draws me to Kid Rock is how he's been able to draw in some Bob Seger influences into his earlier sound. and i grew up listening to a lot of seger. as for Springsteen, i respect the man. sure, everyone points to Nebraska, which is a good album. but Nebraska was not possible without the very under-rated album he and the band put out, The River, which in my mind makes it impossible to put him on an over-rated list. also, for my money, Springsteen put out the best post-9/11 song of them all, "The Rising," which should have won the Grammy. and yes, RTDB, how could i have forgotten billy joel. must have repressed him from memory, i guess. and you're dead on with the precious john mayer, what a tin-eared tart. jw -
if i did, i would've written about it. sorry. jw

expect them around 5ish. jw

Most Over Rated Band of All Time?

over-rated is a difficult gauge to define, given personal tastes and what's considered popular at the time. i generally follow the rule of what bands are/aren't influential by how their music has stood up over the years, which is why i'd disagree with those who have included The Beatles in this thread -- though i know where they're coming from as i once, too, had the same thought. the trouble with The Beatles and Michael Jackson, for that matter, and to a degree Nirvana, is you had to be there at the time to understand what they actually did to push music forward. -- The Beatles were, in some ways, the "inventors" of popular music in taking the form to its high limits by crafting catchy songs. The Beatles then built on that by showing they were capable of building on their music by exploring numerous other avenues and expanding their reach. with all due respect to Hendrix and Zepplin, i consider "Helter Skelter" a great early grunge/metal/hard-rock song that helped introduce what's possible. -- the same for Michael Jackson. even overlooking his work with the Jackson 5, which was influential in producing smart bubble-gum pop, his dominance in the early 1980s was essential in providing a counter-point to the punk movement coming from across the Atlantic. Jackson, with two albums, made pop relevant again and, furthemore, his popularity forced change by influencing MTV to broadcast black artists in regular rotation during day-time hours. this alone was important, as it's unlikely Prince would've made the impact he did, while also ushering in lesser lights such as UB40. -- and it's tough to judge Nirvana, because Cobain died so early. Nirvana, though, did provide an acceptable platform to an American underground sound that had been burgeoning for quite some time -- the Mats, Husker Du, Minutemen, Camper Van Beethoven -- and even allowed some hangers-on (Soul Asylum, Cracker) to get some respectable airplay. i was in Vancouver at the time Nirvana hit, and as much as their songs and that of the Pearl Jam, were overplayed, they did again push music forward by creating a departure from the 80s, be it the L.A. hair-bands to Cindy Lauper. as such, i don't include Journey on my list because, essentially, they did what they did without pretention or real sense that they were "artistes" in the standard sense. now to artists that make my over-rated list: -- genesis, pre and post Gabriel. -- u2 (hung on far too long), and have failed to provide any new ideas. -- dave matthews, who to me is much the modern-day version of supertramp, another band that built a high reputation for popularity on a modestly amusing array of pithy tunes. -- chrissy hynde and the pretenders. why is she still attempting to put out music: it's been far too clear for far too long that late guitarist James Honeywell Scott was the the true influence to this band that put out two good albums a very long time ago. -- ryan adams, who's capable of writing great songs as much as he's capable of writing the same song over and over and over again and putting it on just about every album he puts out. maybe not over-rated, but he's truly failed to come close to reaching his potential. -- carrie underwood. take away her looks, and any donkey can be famous producing muzak to the masses. jw by the way: one of the most under-rated bands on my list are The Faces. -
for you, gringo, i believe this is also known as "going on a date." jw

no offense, hondo, but i can only provide my perspective and it might not meet your reality. please, go ahead and hope for 11-5. there's no problem with that. you are a fan and i hope that your expectations are satisfied. i could very well be wrong. and officially, at this point i'm at 5.5 wins. i won't make a final guess until next week. and please keep in mind that i get paid whether the bills lose or win. and that means i'll keep my objectivity. what kinda bugs me is someone (jokingly i hope) questioning whether i'm an expert and the OP suggesting that those who are "negative" toward the Bills be targets for laughter. fine. laugh. there's nothing i've seen to indicate the Bills making any significant jump this season. that said, i do believe they might be on the right track under Gailey. jw
