wife and i generally watch a few of the audition shows. and this year they seemed a little more formulaic. idol is still trying to recapture that car-wreck spontaneity of william hung, which is impossible to do, given that that was one of the truer moments on the show. pants on the ground wasn't bad a few years ago, but ... otherwise, this group of judges bores me, though j-lo certainly is easy on the eyes. rarely do we watch once the competition gets going. and i couldn't tell you who won last year, the year before that ... and on. and the fact that idol provided the world carrie underwood, to me, remains a stain and black mark against this process. so, please call me when they have a Drive-By Truckers night, followed by a Replacements night, and maybe a Clash night. then we'll see what happens. and keep in mind, my wife fondly refers to me as a "music snob," and i don't disagree. so i apologize beforehand. jw

The Drive By Truckers

lucero's good, but lacks the consistency -- in my opinion -- and degenerate poetry of the DBTs. now that the kings of leon have sold out, the Truckers might be the last rock and roll band standing. i exaggerate only slightly, but it's the sad state we find ourselves in. this new album cannot -- and i mean really cannot -- disappoint. and i say this as, three threads up, there's an american idol topic that i'm sure is generating far more attention than this one. and that's both sad and funny, all in one. jw -
The Drive By Truckers

way ahead of you NoSaint, but appreciate the heads up. i've already downloaded their free single a couple of months ago, and am hitting the record theatre here in town on Tuesday. i've also kept an eye on their tour dates, but nothing excites me just yet. they're either playing too far away or at venues that are too big. for the first time i see them, i'd prefer a smaller club as opposed to a stadium and opening for tom petty and that ilk. i am keeping an eye on that show they just announced in backwoods ontario, though the date's a little too far in advance for me to commit, given that i have a very uncertain schedule. my wife and i are hitting the Loretta Lynn show up at the Riviera Theater in North Tonawanda in a few weeks. can't wait for that. jw -

Bills announce uniform change

sorry, i was responding to not only you, but other posters and their remarks. i did question your "teasing" comment specifically, because i'm seriously not attempting to "tease" anyone here or get a rise out of them. though i can understand that winning and a uniform can be mutually exclusive, so can my views. i can respect why fans are excited about a new uniform, and yet i can still believe that the change in uniform -- in my sole opinion -- is more style over substance and something that does not excite me all that much. jw -

and see, it turns out i can't win for having an opinion and stating it without someone reading in some kind of agenda. i'm not teasing you. in fact, i was fully prepared to end adding to this thread with my "fair enough" comment, before several posters began questioning me and my motives. now i'm teasing people. i understand how a uniform change and a team's record can be mutually exclusive. fine. i get that. i still find no reason to be excited about a uniform change. it's not something that will greatly impact my job in covering the team as opposed to whom the Bills draft in April. so, no, i'm not all that excited about a uniform change. the fact that you as fans are, wonderful. and some have questioned whether my initial post here was being cynical. well ... as for cynicism, just look at what some outsiders have tweeted in regards to this news. i saw one tweet read: "Bills change uniforms is like, ugly girl buys new dress." as someone who eyes the bills from a national perspective, that is the general mood and opinion of those who are not tied to the bills. this franchise is a laughingstock, and would be the NFL's biggest laughingstock if not for the Lions, in my opinion. i could have been far more cynical and far more mean in my initial post. i merely chose to ask a question and raise a point. that it was construed as being condescending or boorish of me, well, ask yourself this question. if someone else (and i won't name a poster so not to drag anyone else into this) had raised my point, would they have been called an ass, boring and his/her line of work put in question. in some ways, you have to understand, that i can't win here even though i was open to having a reasonable discourse. and it's something i continue to attempt to do. so i'm not exactly sure what i have to apologize for by merely raising my opinion. jw -

sure, but i don't understand why some would call me an ass for it. there are those here who do agree with what i've raised and haven't been called out for their comments. evidently, i always have to have some kind of agenda. or i come at people with a condescending tone. or some posters -- such as spartacus -- just don't like me. i've never called anyone an "ass," "moron," "idiot," or questioned their line of work. i have questioned some people's posts and especially those who post absolutes, which are open to debate. you've explained yourself politely. don't know why others can't. jw -
maybe the cat needs a bigger glove, or you're throwing the mouse too hard for the cat to catch it. of course, because of the formation of their paws, cats have difficulty physically "catching" things. then again, one of my two cats has an extra digit and fascinatingly has learned to use it almost like a thumb, and is able to pick up nugget treats off the floor and put it into its mouth. it's all quite cool. jw

Bills announce uniform change
Delete This Account replied to Peter's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
i came to this thread expressing the same opinion i expressed to WBEN, which actually happened to be the first reaction i had to the news of the new uniforms. and that reaction was: how does that help the team's record? so, i posed the same question here and received plenty of feedback, much of it respectfully contrary, some of it not so respectful. i was called a bore, an ass and my professional reputation brought into question (some of those posts have since been edited). i called no one names in this thread and offered my opinion that it was a cash grab while being surprised by how excited fans were in regards to what is essentially a style over substance change. and once the responses leaned overwhelmingly toward support of the new uniforms, i posted, "fair enough." you are the one who persists to question my agenda and call me an ass. wouldn't be the first time, nor the last i've been called that. i gotta thick skin, much of it surrounding my cranium, i guess. jw ADD: my nose is fine, by the way. always has been. -

and yet in a follow up post, i acknowledged much of the reaction and different points of views to my comment and simply posted "fair enough" without getting into any name-calling or heated exchange with anyone. if bills nation is excited about the new uniforms, then so be it. no hidden agenda, no argument from me, no flexing of internet muscles. i shall defer to the masses. it's nothing to get into a big snit over. and i would hope i would be entitled to my opinion as well, as i acknowledge and respect those who have a different point of view in this thread. jw -
what is what Roberto Duran kept telling Sugar Ray during their famous fight back in the 1980s. i'll take "bad puns" for $600, Alex. jw

Coy Wire gets 2 more years in Atlanta
Delete This Account replied to Beerball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
in a bid to put some things in perspective on this: Coy Wire finished his tenure in Buffalo with what was feared to be a career-ending neck injury. in fact, i remember talking to him near the end of that season when he talked about how he was still experiencing difficulty feeling any sense of touch in his hands aside from a tingling sensation. that he continues to play -- and has not sustained serious, permanent damage -- is regarded as a bit of a minor miracle. jw -
ok, stop right there. Bill Engvall had a show? and it lasted 3 seasons? and people here complain about how low journalism has sunk. jw

Bills announce uniform change

why is it that i must have some sort of hidden agenda, as some here have accused. i went on radio and provided my thoughts: -- wouldn't it be better that the Bills changed their record rather than their uniform? -- this strikes me as a cash grab by the Bills, and i'd certainly hope the team uses the newfound money in luring better players and building a better team. i was sincerely surprised to see how much attention and how much excitement this announcement was receiving -- i mean you'd swear they just re-signed Cornell Green -- given all the cynicism that's surrounded the franchise for, lo, these long dry years. me, i just don't buy these uniform changes any more. they strike me as self-generated fluff events. my opinion. sorry to bore you. jw
