i've said it once and i'll say it again. this is the worst day of the year. and it infuriates me that The Man is screwing us little folk because we are generally losing an hour of "OUR" time. though i will be working this weekend, i still consider the weekend "OUR" time, and it's the establishment robbing us of an hour of sleep. there is but one solution, and one that i've campaigned for for quite some time. the best and perhaps only way to make lose-an-hour-of-sleep weekend palatable is to have the hour deducted on say a friday afternoon. for example: at 4 p.m., the clock moves to 5 p.m. time to go home. why must we hard-working folk have to lose the hour on what's essentially a drinking night. (well, in my household, all nights are drinking nights, however i digress). jw

if NFL elects to not lockout players, then there is no real block to free agency at this point, though there are other questions that could be raised in regards to no contract. i am informed that if free agency did begin ... and that's an IF ... it would begin after the weekend. jw

makes sense. i've got Southern Rock Opera ... all i'm missing is Gangstabilly, and the guys' solo stuff. SRO was a difficult album to get through in some ways, because they let their hard southern rock influence out and have bleed on their collective sleeves. so there was a lot there to wade through, never mind a double-album. that said, i think it was an important statement for them to make in regards to their roots and what they stood for. it put a lot into perspective. and there are some great songs on there: "Dead Drunk and Naked," "Zip City," "Let There Be Rock," "Shut Up And Get On The Plane," and "The Three Great Alabama Icons." it's too early to judge Go-Go Boots, just yet. but i will say that my favorites remain, in no particular order, "Pizza Deliverance," "Blessing and A Curse," and "Brighter Than Creation's Dark." i find these to be their most complete. and once i get through Go-Go Boots, i'll order Gansta and start my search for the solo stuff, including Izbell's. it's better to take this in portions, rather than to gorge, i find. jw

for those who missed it, DBT's were on Conan last night, performing "Everybody Needs Love," off their new album. it's a remake of an Eddie Hinton song, one of two included on Go-Go Boots. DBTs on Conan jw

drop everything and head out and buy or steal or do what you have to do to get the newest Drive-By Truckers release, Go-Go Boots. finally got a chance to give this sucker a spin and, upon first listen, this just be their most mature, while they touch upon many of their familiar themes, losers, degenerates behind a soundtrack painted on a yearning backdrop. "I Do Believe" jumps off the disk, while "The Fireplace Poker," is haunting and angst-infused, and "Ray's Automatic Weapon" just knocked my socks off in its sparse, blunt and lonely indignity. and then there's the poetic screed against, what i believe is a former manager, titled "A*%holes," which is as a refinely delivered screw you as ever penned -- right up there with "Yer so Vain" -- and whomever this song has been written about truly knows it is about them. "Cartoon Gold" also stood out for its sly innocence. again, music is not dead, you just have to poke and peck for it. jw
