  1. 1) nickleback stinks. 2) just because they're from Canada makes no difference. 3) Americans are the ones who made them popular, so who's to blame. 4) Americans are also the ones who provided us with creed. 5) puh-lease refer blame elsewhere. thanks. jw
  2. missed you in Rochester. Brad Smith says, 'hello.' jw
  3. well, who doesn't like turtles, eh? jw
  4. oh, so i see you're done attempting to humor all with your twitter takes to turn your attention to here. please, enlighten us further. i find it so illuminating. jw
  5. the full story here: AP Source: Fitz agrees to 6-year, $59 million deal with Bills jw
  6. in the ever-changing English language, there has been movement on accepting "their" to refer to a singular person, as it encompasses both "his" and "her." either are now considered valid in many circles. good chat, nonetheless. jw
  7. not worth the effort to take on the OP on this. that person has a right to their opinion. this is crap? c'mon. now who's the one being lazy. must everything be GREAT or garbage, SUPERFANTASTIC or crap. is there no place for some nuance here? point is, my two posts opened a discussion here, and i'm all for that. without yelling or flaming others, i've politely and methodically explained myself without calling anyone juvenile or what they wrote as being crap, garbage or whatever. all i was wondering is if the OP and at least one other poster here are such big fans of Shawne Merriman, you'd expect them to get his name spelled right. ... just sayin. jw
  8. no, photographers generally write the cutlines. they're moved with each photo. could be that the website editor made the mistake, but how does that make this my mistake. i didn't write the cutline. i don't manage the web page. my byline's on the page, but i have no control with what happens with my stories once they move on the wire. some are chopped. some are edited. some move as is, be it on the web or in newspapers. i don't see what the big deal is. i'm merely wondering how Bills fans can't spell the name of a star player, while criticizing someone having a point of view. it's an opinion. it's open to being debated. but to call it "garbage" or being "mailed in," well i beg to differ. that's up for debate, too. me choosing to provide my point of view isn't unreasonable either. and that i chose to do it in this method is fair, i think. what's the big deal. jw
  9. that's a Getty photo. jw
  10. who's Shawn? Nelson? jw
  11. who's Shawn? Nelson? jw
  12. that's not an unfair point of view, and i'm sure one that's shared by numerous Bills fans. i do think that what the Bills are proposing to add in renovating Ralph Wilson Stadium has the opportunity to generate more revenue. bottom line, there is a bottom line that needs to be met in order for the Bills to remain a viable entity in WNY in order to remain competitive in the NFL. this is a money-making league. and it's also important to continue to generate additional revenue in order for them to maintain their value for any future owner to ascertain what return they will get in order to pay off the purchase debt. jw
  13. i expect there to be talks with certain considerations given to cost, marketing, etc. Phil Lind, last year, discussed the possibility of renewing the deal, and the Bills are all for it because of the exposure they get in Toronto. the NFL's on board, too. Rogers does get several other benefits from "hosting" this series, as it provides them an in with a $9 billion business in the NFL, and fits in with their many other communication properties, from TV to cell phones to other media. not sure if Rogers Centre is making money on this current deal, but i'm sure Rogers Communication as an entire entity is generating revenue. and concerns aside about the Bills playing home games in Toronto. and i can appreciate the angst and anger these games do cause. in the long-haul, the Bills long-term viability in this market is distinctly tethered to regionalization. and this deal has been very good to the franchise on that front. aside from the money the team receives directly for playing these games, the boost in tickets and other types of sales is elementally significant in breathing necessary life into a small-market franchise. Toronto's proximity also plays a key factor in the argument to keep the Bills in this "region." like it or not -- and if it stays like this until Buffalo transforms into an economic engine -- it's a smart and necessary deal. jw not true, or at least not the way i understand it. the NFL is opening the door to have one team enter a five-year deal to play a "home" game in the UK, much like the Bills series in Toronto. should the Bucs go for it, they will be playing home games in the UK -- and from what i understand -- in addition to the annual game at Wembley. jw
  14. and here's the full story that just moved. Full story jw and to be fair to George, he wasn't "ripping" Toronto or its residents, simply the general lack of support the Bills get in a "home" game at the Rogers Centre as compared to playing at Ralph Wilson Stadium.
  15. obviously, more coming on this. just filed writethru with quotes and more details. jw
  16. half the Bills' earning are essentially taxed in NY, though NY also gets to tax the visiting team players so for all intents and purposes it's about full rate given there's two teams out there. not sure about the Toronto part of things. jw
  17. day and night, night and day, hour by hour, coffee gone crisp and long stale, popping bennies by the bowlful, and injecting adrenalin by the gallon he/she scours the intrawebs in search of nuggets and slivers of detail to provide the latest and nuanced update in his/her cause. he/she will not, refuses to -- until the very last breath seeps from his/her body -- relent. and the posts come, and the conspiracy grows, and the objective still incomplete, toronto, bills, buffalo, ralph, rogers, wilson googled and googled over and over again until the print on the keys grow pale as the full moon outside his/her window. weary, sleepless, deprived of dreams, defying, as we all can see, death for one more day in search of an answer and, maybe something more than that, a reason to be. jw
  18. actually, glancing back through this utter, naval-gazing, unreadable mess, i'd have to say that GG might have a majority ownership share of this thread based on this concise and amusing roundup. it stood way back then, some 6 pages ago, and i believe still does today. jw ADD: now if only we could relocate this thread.
  19. no, i was purely amused by how you posted a story to confirm what Collins had said, as if that had somehow been in doubt. jw see above.
  20. :wallbash: :wallbash: and jw
  21. Thanks for adding a "bylined" story. for us in the business, always nice to get that recognition. there'll be a slight change to this one coming as I just got off the phone with the lead architect, who discussed some specific potential improvements, including expanding the concourses. jw
  22. more to come on this story, as the remainder of the story is now in editing. jw
  23. This was a dreadful night. Didn't deal with Kent much, but the few times I did, he lived up to his larger than life reputation. Best comment I got was from Thurman: "We have suffered a tremendous loss. Kent was a teammate, big brother and best friend. My heart breaks for His amazing family. My heart breaks period. He will be a best friend and in my heart forever." Former Buffalo Bills C Kent Hull dies at 50 Rest in Peace, Kent. John Wawrow.
