so, why not provide a response with some substance to it, rather than simply throw out some weak "counterweight" crapola. just because it's a counterweight doesn't make it meaningful. jw -

oddly enough, why is it that the "liberal" media is allowed to be questioned, and yet that any criticism of Faux News is verboten. Pravda lives, i guess. jw -

right, the economy needs to continue sucking for a little while longer because who the hell cares about the people. it's all about scoring debating points, no? and that's the trouble with the Republicans right now. they are failing to provide a vision as to what they will do, and instead attempting to score debating points by poking holes in what someone has done -- not for the betterment of the country, but for the betterment of themselves. it's disappointing. at a time when an incumbent president is vulnerable, and there are bona fide questions about his ability to forcefully govern, the opposition continues down a winding road of blind-foolery by standing up for the rich, who have contributed in putting the country in this mess to begin with. this has the looks of Barry Goldwater vs. LBJ redux. jw -

no, hiding one's head the sand and pretending the suburbs are the answer, and then complaining about how the city is drawing away county money and decrying how the city -- from the schools to poverty -- is getting worse is hypocritical at best. either you're part of the problem or part of the solution, and moving away and then complaining about the rot is pure self-serving superiority. jw -
well, the field is weak, the party is irreparably split at this point, will likely be for another 2 years. so really, there is no option but to use this next year as an opportunity to define where the Republicans will be not in November, but in two November's from now. because their inability to mount any semblance of a clear-headed opposition isn't helping the country. jw
-
well, seriously. the schizophrenic state of the GOP has produced what exactly? a flawed process with light-weight wannabe candidates who have more flies on them then a dead rat in back alley trash bin. as for a liberal's wet dream, i'm sure that would resemble something akin to Trump or Palin jumping in at the last minute. jw
-
how is newt relevant? unless the republicans turn to huntsman then they're doomed for another 4 years. and that still might be the best-case scenario despite newt proclaiming three weeks ago he was gonna win. jw

¶ rock isn't dead, never was, and for those searching for it can find it right back where it began in the deep south, in alabama and in memphis to be specific. ¶ you can have your tools and coldplays and arcane fires, pretentious posers and tepid troubadors, tin-eared frauds with bad haircuts, mullet melodies and feathered lyrics. i'll take my music dirty-pickin and southern fried the way it used to be because evidently the garage bands still live and they can be found cranking out jams in greasy guitar fashion if you listen hard enough for a well-placed backbeat. ¶ i'm talking about the Dexateens, a five-member outfit from muscle shoals, with curious crooked licks that pack an understated yet powerful punch. they're carrying the Drive-By Truckers torch, and may be the anti-thesis to the seattle sound, or anything else from the granola-eating northwest, the neo-hippy-filled decemberists be damned. ¶ and they ain't minneapolis, either, though i'm sure Westerberg's left impressed someplace in his cold resonating basement studio, because he's all too familiar with the Big Star memphis sound. and if you don't understand the meaning of that last sentence, then perhaps it's time you looked it up. ¶ because in the name of W.C. Handy, we're going back to the roots. and it makes no difference that big Stevie Earle's now living in new york city, because he's never forgotten where he's come from, and that's really all that counts. ¶ and Jim Jarmusch was well ahead of his time when he made "mystery train," or "down by law" and had the inspiration to throw Mr. Tom Waits on the black and white screen. ¶ ¶ you can have your yes's and nirvana's. and i'll stick with Johnny Cash and Joe Strummer and the fall-down-drunk 'Mats and their one-fingered salutes to an ever entrenched cul-de-sac safe society cozied up to its j-lo's and carrie underwoods. ¶ ¶ it was a few weeks ago when i got into a discussion in the bills locker room with some young kid, who works for the city's "rock" station. he brought up nirvana and i responded by saying, "i'm tired of hearing about the legend of kurt cobain." ¶ sacreligous as that might be, i really meant it. so he asked me what he should be listening to. ¶ and i said, "start with `Exile on Main Street' and you'll get an idea of an album that has influenced just about everything good that's succeeded it right up to this day." ¶ "well," he said with great indignation. "`Some Girls' is a better album." ¶ ¶ after throwing up in my mouth, i turned and told the kid that i was going to stand at the opposite end of the room because there really was no need to continue this discussion. ¶ to which he brought up radiohead. ¶ ugh. ¶ i'm tired of this fascination with cult bands whose navel-gazing distinction has far outsold its "genius" talent. they might as well be yesterday's "Smiths." and i know i'm stepping on a lotta sensitive toes, but Let It Be. ¶ ¶ some might say the same thing about me and the 'Mats. and yet the mighty Replacements stayed true to form right to the bitter drunken end. they never made it, and they didn't make it on their own terms. they didn't sell out by instead putting out songs true to their spirit still resonate today, even though they've been ripped off by everyone from here to tom petty. lord knows, one day rod stewart may apply strings and sugar to "Bastards of Young," and do to that song as to what he did to Waits' "Downtown Train." ¶ ¶ and that was the point i made in my discussion with this kid. ¶ he said, "if i had the privelege to play in front of 15,000 fans, i'd play to my technical best because the audience deserves it." ¶ that might be music, but it ain't rock and roll, because spilling guts is a sloppy business by nature, and none of us can claim to be perfect. i ain't, that's for sure. ¶ so i told him to grow up, and we'll have this discussion in 10 years when his balls grow under him, and he maybe takes a trip to memphis to appreciate how Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee and Alex Chilton unraveled in such sweaty insober wonder to create an illicit sound that still rocks the foundation of instability. ¶ as much as we like to believe that music is subjective, it's really not. ¶ no matter what anyone thinks, "Tumbling Dice" and "Turd on The Run" and "Can't Hardly Wait" still stand today, where others have whithered. ¶ paul simon's best stuff was still with garfunkel, and the doors are dated. and the foo fighters of today are putting out such crap that it's reminiscent of the baloney of what rush was releasing 30 so-called spirit of radio years ago. ¶ ¶ so take a listen to the bone-dry Dexateens' "The Ballad of Souls Departed," and you'll get the dirty grief-stricken idea of how music today can still stir souls. ¶ ¶ long live rock, its Cheap Tricks and Johnny Thunders and "Let the Bad Times Roll." ¶ ¶ jw

Stadium Lease/Upgrades

let's clear a few things up here: -- the county is seeking bids to hire an outside lawfirm to handle the negotiations. this is standard procedure and was done the last time the lease was up. -- the Bills are the ones who have hired a prominent architectural firm that specializes in sports stadium construction and design to conduct an extensive study on what's needed to maintain Ralph Wilson Stadium as a viable facility and what improvements could be done to make it a more attractive destination for fans. -- Rogers would prefer two regular season games, though that is very unlikely to happen unless the NFL expands its regular season to 17-18 games. -- the Bills have never indicated they're open to giving up another game to Toronto in any instance. -- season ticket sales were climbing since the Toronto series was launched until this season. and the poor ticket sales can be blamed on the uncertainty surrounding the lockout that wiped out the entire offseason. and another factor is the Bills have traditionally had difficulty selling out games past Thanksgiving well before the Toronto series. jw -

Chris Collins was not dragging his feet. aside from the fact there was no guarantee he would be the county executive beyond last year (he's not), he was awaiting the completion of the Bills' study of Ralph Wilson Stadium before moving forward. that study is not yet complete. Poloncarz is picking up the baton and is now ensuring his ducks are in a row once talks begin. jw -
Nix is scheduled to retire after the draft? ... i'd certainly hedge that assumption. jw

Bills Sign WR David Clowney
Delete This Account replied to McBeane's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
i think that's even a stretch. the Bills aren't sending messages here other than the obvious fact that they're in need of receivers and, upon looking at those currently available, they tabbed Clowney as someone with potential and sent him a contract offer, which Clowney, according to his agent, has signed. that's all. jw -
Bills Sign WR David Clowney

ok, were you being sarcastic then? or you being sarcastic now? or both? i'll stick to what i've said. i can't see any way in how David Clowney agreeing to a deal this week be construed as sending Stevie Johnson a message. Clowney will compete for a job on the team with and/or without Johnson. if Johnson returns, he'll do so under a new contract that will more than likely make him the team's top-paid receiver. if Johnson does not return, it will have nothing to do with the Bills signing Clowney in January. jw -

there is no can of worms here. the post to which i was responding to suggested that signing Clowney might somehow anger Stevie Johnson. why, lord only knows. this move would not. Johnson has said he'd like to continue playing in Buffalo. signing Clowney would not change Johnson's mind. no it's not. jw -

uhhh ... in most cases, these contracts signed in early January are negligible and hinge on the player actually makign the team. whatever the Bills signed David Clowney for will have no effect at all on whether they re-open talks with Stevie Johnson or change Stevie's mind on Buffalo. jw -

hey, it's not a big deal, but it's something. from what i've been told, Clowney's got speed, and that's something the Bills WR corps really lacked this year, especially after Roscoe went down. it's worth giving Clowney a shot. it's better than not doing anything, eh? jw -

don't put words in my mouth. at no point have i ever said in any fashion or form what you suggest in your final sentence. you are not agreeing with me, because i've never said or written such thing. and the entire argument you pose in your original post remains chalk full of holes. now you argue that the defense is poor, and want one of the people who was involved in coaching the defense to take over as coach. there's no logic to that. and when you accept that the offense is better, doesn't that negate much of your ammunition in criticizing Chan? what's this about ducks? you conveniently cherry pick stats to further some bizarre point that you want change for the mere sake of change. change is good, because change is different and, should you last as a member of this board, you'll be demanding change yet again in 10 or 11 months, merely because your impatience requires scratching. the defense is improving. the numbers do say so. and they have a better emerging core of players on D right now than they had a year ago. but of course, that matters little, because your march to change demands change and anyone -- even henning -- is the answer. why? because he's different. bull-oney. jw -

ok, one: your first response was to DwightInPhilly, not me. so try to keep up here. two: whether or not Mr. Wilson likes to be interviewed with me or not, i've at least earned the right to talk to him on occasion. and the offense's production this season is largely improved. three: lower case writing? that's all you got? four: all in all, you conveniently sidestep the large, gaping hole i've poked through your tepid argument by noting that, despite injuries, the the bills offense is vastly improved over previous years and not -- as you've stated -- in the bottom half of the league. i at least had the courtesy to apologize by saying perhaps i went overboard with my initial post. and i'll stick to that because it's become quite clear that i may well be arguing with a child. jw
