  1. he's up and walking and apparently feeling better, but not likely to play against Pittsburgh, according to Coach. jw
  2. indeed, having a flash drive and remembering or giving yourself the time to use it are two different things. i've had a few crashes in my day, the most notable was during the third period of a Leafs-Senators playoff game in Ottawa. i immediately jumped on my stringer's laptop and still managed to get the story out seconds after the game ended. that was a tough series on computers. a few games earlier, highly respected Canadian sports columnist Cam Cole had sparks flying out of the back of his machine and lost everything. talk about a meltdown. jw
  3. Leo Roth was one of the best beat writers to have covered the Bills during my time here dating to march 2000. with no disrespect to my other colleagues, i always stepped up my game when Roth was covering the team. his absence, now that he's covering mostly the outdoors beat, has been missed. jw
  4. for what it's worth, McKelvin spoke about his responsibilities and that he needs to become a complete corner -- press and zone -- in order to free up the Bills pass-rush. of course, there are times where the CBs are asked to play off, and other times when they need to press. McKelvin needs to find that comfort zone because he is still a considerably raw player, who didn't get the advantage to see or face complex passing schemes at Troy. from my understanding, he was playing off in order to better read where the quarterback's going. with his speed, he could get away with that at Troy. that doesn't work at this level, and McKelvin acknowledged that he has relied a little too much on instinct over technique. i like Perry, by the way. jw
  5. i was pretty baffled myself on it, though i think it had more to do with McKelvin's comfort zone at that point in time early in camp than anything else. i had discussed the 10-15 yard cushion with Perry shortly after the Hall of Fame game, and he gave me the same line then. of course, there has been a big concern as noted in the story how much development time McKelvin lost due to the infected finger. the Bills staff was eager to have McKelvin work against Owens and Evans during that time to get him better accustomed to facing elite receivers. i think Leodis is, in fact, coming along. Maybin has a way to go, not much is being expected out of him for Saturday's game. taking a three-day weekend before it all really starts piling on. will check in at some point. jw
  6. Doug Tucker, our AP Sports Writer in Kansas City, wrote the piece, and a tough job that was considering all the information he had to cram in. Mr. Wilson got 12 minutes to sum up 50 years, and Doug got 1,500 words to do the same. I merely contributed a few bonmots from Mr. Wilson and Al Davis. jw ADD: funny, on this website, byline is stripped and yet the contributing tag stayed in. again, credit to Doug for writing it.
  7. well, finally a thread that has nothing to do with the Bills' relocation, Trent Edwards, Terrell Owens or Coach Jauron. now, to the point of the matter ... who's Ryan? and with that, i'm out. jw
  8. will try better on the delivery tomorrow, but must first consult with my circulation department .... as for your concerns, they're fair ones. it's too early in my opinion to tell right now. jw
  9. ugh! spent part of last weekend cleaning out a virus from my computer. was finally able to download spybot and after several failed attempts to run it, i changed the program's name (to fool the virus) to finally get it to run. took it three run-throughs, plus two run-throughs of malwarebytes and adaware to finally get my machine up and running. vicious, vicious, vicious. and no, i hadn't backed up (i have now, though), but it's a lesson learned and what proved to be a much wasted (not the good kind) weekend. jw
  10. thanks for reading today rather than waiting for my rehash, G(orgeous) G(eorge) ... kidding. would point out that many teams, bills aren't the only one, that don't have injured players travel with them for preseason games. ... also failed to mention in my story that James Hardy also practiced indoors with T.O. while team was outside. ... reason i didn't mention Hardy is because he's been working out individually for quite some time and there is still no real timetable in regards to when he might be cleared. don't know if he's getting any more prima donna status than Bruce Smith did in his days in Buffalo. sideline observation from Tuesday's practice: Owens stood behind the offense during team drills and would time Edwards' count and take off on his own on the snap, as if he were actually lined up at scrimmage. i've not seen many injured players (veterans or rookies) do that during practice in my 10 years here. ... for what it's worth. jw
  11. why no in fact, and i think, considering the topic, it would be in completely poor taste, unless of course someone, say, used a clip from a movie with Tom Cruise in it and inserted English subtitles over the German language in which Hitler's unhappy about a bad turn in the war and instead had him talking as if he were a died-in-the-wool Bills fan wondering what in god's name was the team and Ralph Wilson thinking in signing Terrell Owens, and posted this all on one of those intrawebs social networking places like "utubas," or something. my interest now is somewhat piqued, though i think this would be deserving a new thread ... perhaps the starter of this thread can begin one. jw
  12. funny, i don't think any of these issues have ever been discussed here, especially the chances of the Bills relocating and a poster starting a sentence on this subject with something like, "i know this won't sit well with WNY," or something like that. no, this one's absolutely original. folks, help me out if i'm not mistaken. and, in fact, i believe this is the first time i've replied to a post with this theme in such a fashion, though i am getting an intense feeling of deja vu. has maybin signed yet? and what's up with that? jw
  13. Owens looked good in individual workouts today. my guess, resting. Jauron didn't say how (Jackson) injury initially happened. but i do know he either jammed it while falling to ground or got hit on it while running through line in practice today. ... no hint of severity. Fred was in pain when on ground. trying to find out more but heading out for dinner with my wife. no, Bell not back at practice, but Jauron said he's feeling better but uncertain whether he'll play Saturday. ... of course, GG, you could read the story i filed today -- in which most of this was included -- and save me the work of have to condense it into this note. ... jw (once again begin a smartass). ADDS (Jackson)
  14. thanks bladiebla. you may not know it, but i do go by the handle of "Bastard." it's the name of my hockey fantasy pool team, "The Bastards," which is actually short for "Bastards of Young," the anthemic cult hit produced by my favorite band, The 'Mats, which of course is short for "The Replacement." sorry, couldn't help but get in that plug. jw
  15. got tied up with a few things today, so haven't been able to log in. as noted in story, this is preseason and i still think T.O. being on the field makes a big difference in opening up attack. from looks of it, Owens may not play until at least preseason finale at the earliest. i think Fred's injury is worrisome, though we might not know how bad/good? until we get an update tomorrow. jw
  16. yes, in fact. my stories can be found on the interwebs and the newspapers. did forget a few diversions though on this thread: aside from the Hugh Hefner and Hunter S. Thompson references, one key highlight was rginal (he/she did wonder what the big deal was in regards to "d" and "e") suggesting that most of the posters here were "half-drunk," to which someone (Dean? i think) questioned who wasn't giving 110 percent. that was an absolute nutblast hoot. thanks, rginal for providing so many of with so little to do with amusement. jw
  17. you're technically correct on this point, Lori. but i think we've got lost on what the original poster's initial point ... that Etukeren has better numbers than Maybin and should be in the Hall of Fame or something ahead of Bruce, but only if I drink at JoJos or Thirsty's, while spelling doesn't count and GG made a veiled penetrating reference and .... periods. jw
  18. and those are the only plays we know he was out there for ... but quit citing facts. they don't work. the only statistics that count are Etukeren's speed in relation to Maybin, which the point of this original post the the barrel of monkey's circus act that's followed. jw
  19. i go to neither. ... and no, that's not a place. jw
  20. i wrote what i implied. i wrote series. i didn't write plays because i didn't care if he was on the field if when the touchdown was scored. i write in specifics ....... periods. jw
  21. forget embarrassment, it's the Donte Whitner/Sammy Morris thing that's got me confused now. how's this got anything to do with No. 71? was it an embarrassment that Chris Neil knocked out Chris Drury? what the? and by the way, that was, by my count 4 periods leading up to the period followed by the period, which actually adds up to 6. source: TBD. (the funny thread.)
  22. for "rginal" (see other thread): it would be No. 71. jw
