Not too stick up too hard for Rex because he really screwed the pooch here today, but the biggest difference between last years defense and this one is we had much better luck with injuries last year. Some people forget that Rivers and Brady marched up and down the field at will against last year's incredible Bills defense.

It is amazing to me how many successful college coaches don't understand that their "genius" is largely INSTITUTIONAL. I coach college athletics for a living. There are haves and have nots in every sport and every level. In my game, the perennial top NCAA teams are almost all (a) big state universities or (b) ELITE academic schools. If you are not one of those you'll have a hard time placing in the top 10-15 at NCAAs. It can be done, but it's harder. Mine is not either, but we hang in there. There are a few schools that I'd love to have a crack at coaching, because I know the talent in my pool of prospects would increase dramatically. BUT, there are MANY MANY more where it would decrease (for reasons I won't bother with here), and I'd have very little chance to match the level of success we're accustomed to. So most people would consider my school to be on of the "haves" at my sport and level. So when we do well, am I good, or just lucky? Well, I'd rather be lucky than good anyway, so I'll just say I'm happy I have a job I love. Things that vary widely that affect your ceiling as a college program are not only facilities and financial resources, but location, tradition, what majors are on offer and the general academic prestige of the school. Cost is a huge one for the overwhelming majority of NCAA athletes who receive little or no athletic scholarship money. Obviously the factors that influence the ceiling in big time college football are different than for other sports/levels. My point is that a coach who lands in a spot that already has it's institutional <ahem> ducks in a row, can look like a SUPER GENIUS, when in fact they're just another good coach at a school who's trying harder to win. Coaching matters, obviously, but there are more competent coaches than there are high-potential programs for them all. Getting the head job at The University Of Nike is 80% of Kelly's genius. The other 20% was his own innovation and creativity, which he deserves credit for, of course. But for some reason, a lot of successful college coaches (all sports and levels) don't seem to have the self-awareness to realize that their own super genius was not the biggest reason they excelled. In college football, they get to the NFL where the playing field is MUCH more even and it's a different story. Kelly's moves seem to indicate he thinks he knows something no one else knows...which can only be called arrogant. Chip Kelly is a very talented coach and if he chooses to stay in the NFL (in a quality organization with a competent QB, of course) he'll do well. But it looks like he needs to eat some humble pie. One reason I love Rex is that when he makes a mistake, he stands up in front of the worlds and admits it. One thing I've learned being a coach is that you're better off when you're honest with yourself and others about your mistakes. Kelly is sharp enough that if he can become good at this he can be an excellent NFL coach. Even in Philly. I do love it when the Eagles suck, though. So I'm in no hurry for the light bulb to go on!

I wasn't impressed with TTs game last night, but it seemed to me the turning point in the game was Miller going out. Taylor looked a lot worse after that then he did before. Their defense just smothered us. Sammy was blanketed every time they showed him. Tyrods biggest sin last night was not being Brady. Switch QBs and I think we all know how that game ends. But he's a #15-20 QB which is what a lot of us thought would be good enough and is a huge step up from last year.

i get that, but let's give it a few weeks? i am as underwhelmed with the start of the season as anyone, but I would like to see how the coaching staff adjusts to recent developments before i declare them incompetent. Their losses are to 2 QBs with 6 rings combined and another who has torn the Bills up every time he's played them and put his team in the playoffs every year of his career. people love to bash Dalton, but they also conveniently ignore how bad the Bengals were before they drafted him. everyone's pining away for the return of Jim Scwartz, but his defenses sucked the hog against Rivers and Brady early last season. Or have you forgotten? and sorry, the idea that an owner shouldn't be allowed to hire his own head coach is laughable....no matter what you think of whaley's judgment (which I admit I'm suspicious of).

all artificial playing surfaces are a scourge on humanity. this might sound silly, but i really feel bad for high school kids who hardly ever get to play on dirt/grass. When I think about playing high school football, i can still smell the grass, mud on our practice field. where i live, most of the fields are made of this awful awful stuff. yes, they are slippery as hell when moisture hits them. if there is any sun the field turns to an oven. and who hasn't had the pleasure of picking those stupid rubber slivers out of clothes, ears, eyes, mouth, etc.? i am not the least bit surprised they are suspected of increasing injury and i hope the Bills have a grass field again one day. of course it can be done...if they do it in Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Green Bay.

I am not a Whaley fan. The reasons why are stated well in this thread. I also realize it's not time to quit on the season after 3-3. But the way we got the **** beat out of us in those three losses tells me this team is a fraud. You can blame it on coaching, and it's clear Rex has made some mistakes. But I always have felt like Whaley is just making it up as he goes along. The Fred and Cassel moves are great examples. I know... Cassel sucks and Fred is old an injury prone, but there was no reason to fritter away our depth in those areas. EJ is just so terrible and he's going to get all our receivers killed soon if we don't get him back to the bench. Yet Whaley is doing everything he can to prove the world wrong about him...why? I know Cassel can only throw it about 4 yards but at least it's on time and accurate.

Oh my goodness...I just saw this. I am awfully sad to hear this, and I dearly hope for a fast and full recovery. It's been awhile since I have been to a game, but I used to go to a lot prior to 2010. Proud to say I shot the bull with Bill at the above mentioned pole 6 tailgate once or twice. And what a gracious, fun and friendly fellow he is! A real hoot and a sincere Bills brother. Bill, I'm looking forward to seeing you there again some time!
