I think the point is that they're playing their best players and they're not good enough. They're not going to be able to add new players until the offseason. Your principle would apply if they came back next season with the same players and expected new results.

I happen to agree with his sentiment, Edwards is adjusting scheme to the talent or lack thereof on the defensive side of the ball. Seems as though the switch to the 4-3 is an abandonment of the pass rush, because the current players have no hope of producing one. He can't magically make the players better. The key pass rushing position in a 3-4 is the OLBs of which he has Chris Kelsay and Reggie Torbor, two well below average players.
