What we didn't know about Bill Cowher????
rpcolosi replied to ottawabills's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
most certainly is interesting. i think it funny all the "experts" and media forget such things... -
cheers to that. this kid has a bright future, I just hope he can come back to form in 2 years, not necessarily this year. thats got to take some time to recover from mentally in addition to physically.

this discusses why mid aged coaches on their second go around as a HC generally are the most successful (see bellicheck, wade, norv, levy, vermeil, etc.) i'm not saying Chan fits in all these categories, but he does fit the "been a coach on teams winning at least 50 games in the nfl" as well as having 11+ years of NFL coaching experience. hes not marty mornwehig, but i like it. http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/insider/news/story?id=4797666

both the cowboys and bills were fading fast talent wise. Free Agency had cleaned them both out. Gailey was canned more so because of 2 straight playoff blow outs and not the 8-8 season. in addition, JJ knew they needed to rebuild, and when he went with campo, they clearly went into full rebuild mold until PArcells/Bum took over. the bills went through rebuild mode 3 times. once to clean out butlers mess of contracts and dead cap space he left, second to clean up donahoe's shoe string talent, and now 3rd to clean up Marv and Russ' disaster of a train wreck. Gailey was an OC in the NFL this past year with old school philosiphies like RUNNING THE FOOTBALL. this is in stark contrast to Haley, who is a pass whacky architect. the NFL is a cyclic league - with the 3-4 at an all time high, the best way to beat it is with a solid running game, and the best way to be a 4-3 is with a great intermediary passing game and one that utilizes the middle of the field. if we run the football like he has with his past teams (350ish carries for the RB, or split 200/200 with Lynch and FJ) we will be able to control the clock and grind down a lot of the d-linemen in 3-4s. nose tackles have a tough time chasing running backs all game and are better suited for a pass rush where tehy attack instead of run defense where they pursue. so lets all get off our horses and let it play out....

yes and the US government intentionally blew up the WTC to go back into iraq...

here let me help you clarify if you can get beyond name recognition: Gaily has had multiple offenses in the top 10 in the league with QBs like Mike Tomczak and Jay Fiedler. Outside of Billick having culpepper to moss he has never had such luck. So with far less talent Gailey has done FAR more. and Thats with a banged up and washed up Aikman as well on a cowboys team that was on the down slope (just like the late 90s bills)... if people are too stupid to understand the media, then so be it. the Media loves to build their own agenda and lists of hot candidates. Gailey was one such guy in 2006 for the Steelers and Dolphins. However, they love billick because he is a loud mouth and makes good quotes and such. GAiley is a football guy. he runs the football and wants to stop the run. this is what wins games. He was at a second rate SEC school and was pretty damn good at GT. he won't wow anyone, but neither did norv turner in SD or wade in Dallas or Vermiel in KC. I certainly put Gailey in their class. Lets not jump off the edge and see what he can do, because this bills team has more talent then those former dolphins teams of 01 and 02... and he sure used bettis a lot in Pittsburgh. it be nice to see Lynch and FJ run for 30-40 times a game consistently, cause that's where our talent is... GO BILLS!
-
DUDE Aikman was a concussed mess at this point. you must be 16 if you don't remember. the guy had nothing left, and Gailey had the lovely job of telling him that his career was over. get a grip. its NOT Jauron. this guy has a winning record incollege and the NFL and knows offenses (see the steelers mid 90s and dolphins). he will RUN THE FOOTBALL...
-
with the receivers teh cheifs had, would you?
-
don t be shocked if he helps us draft a good OL and gets Trent worked out... I know its crazy talk but he has done more with a lot less - see jay fiedler...
-
except Gailey has a winning NFL record (unlike Kiffin or Jauron), he has been to the NFL playoffs twice (unlike any coach we've had since wade) and he was a winning head coach in college (unliek kiffin). other then those difference's you are right on.... you should be thankful our GM 1.) did all his business in the dark without hte media hovering around (hence why they give us sh(t) 2.) he actually interviewed a list of candidates and from at least one candidate he was "extremely thorough" 3.) he stuck to his word.... this will get lost on people but he committed to what he wanted. I just hope he has a good strength and conditioning coach.

Coach Search Marketing Plan Was Read Wrong

can we delete this post alredy? -
i think nolan is a 4-3 guy and when chan was in miami they were 4-3. i dont see the bills changing over to 3-4 at this point simply from a personnel standpoint. it's not logical unless they fully commit to maybin as OLB. problem is, kelsay, denny and schobel are all way too small to play DE in a 3-4. stroud would be a good DE in a 3-4 with kyle williams in the middle. you want your fastest, strongest "big man" on teh edges. as much as I don't like the 4-3, it works. we just dont have the talent on the line or in the LB corps. if you look at what Frazier's been doing, its really impressive. and the 3-4 isn't invincible, just ask the Patsies. again, I actually really like this Chan Gaily hiring. i know most people may not and mortenson will have a dumbfounded look on his face, but its a smart choice. his offenses have historically been good, he was a winning head coach and knows how to be rough on players. I like it. we need this. now i'll be interested in who DC is - gunther cunnigham?
-
and when he left that team sucked pretty bad. he had no talent offensively to work with. that teams best players were thomas and taylor and their secondary. they had no one one O even worth mentioning.
-
all at the end of their careers. just like we lost with kelly, thurman and andre at the end of their careers.. call me crazy, but i really love this pic. im shocked his name was never brought up before.
-
but an offensive line with continuity sure would. It's amazing how simple it is. When watching old bill's highlights, the reason Reich was solid in relief was because of that O-line. They were always on the same page. The same is said for the Colts and Jets. Unlike most people here, I don't think Trent is done. I also don't think Brohm is done. I don't even think getting as sully puts it a "3rd tier coach" would ruin us. What matters more then anything is how in the world Nix addresses the O-line. If you have a solid O-line and any great college qb with decent weapons you will be in every game. If you look at the difference between the early years of Brees and the later years, OL was huge, huge imporvement. Sure having Gates is what people say helps, but that OL was insanely solid and consistent. Same's been true with Peyton and Saturdy, Ugoh. Why did Brady struggle this year? Because Matt Light is a shade of his former self and that OL is going down hill.. Rarely, rarely in the NFL will you see a team suck with a great offensive line. It is the reason that Polian is still successful to this day and why we were in the 90s. If Nix knows this, and I suspect we lucked out in that he does, then I trust, regardless of coach, Ralph's age, Jeff Littman, etc that we wil have a much improved product to come. OLs can absolutely RUIN great quarterbacks. but they can also make average QBs into "stars." so lets chill out on teh coaching search and all the negativity Sully is throwing around. shows like PTI and stuff actually still show us love and say its a great place to be. we will get a coach, and hopefully, draft a good tackle or two to help keep TE or Brohm up rightn and make room for fast freddie to get 1500...

except that it doesn't. but hey, take your fleeting fanhood and head to Jax....
-
No one has brought this up yet - but is it possible Schefter is right, we have a "hand shake" deal in place with Frazier, and part of the reason we are getting "turned down" is that other coaches know this? is it possible the only reason we are asking to interview guys is to be "thorough" and nothing more then that? I'd be shocked if they try to interview anyone else at this point. obviously Frazier was their top choice. I questions whether they actually offered it to Harbaugh or not. that seems like quite the stretch and NO one other then Casserly has reported it. I just simply think Frazier is and has been the guy. It makes sense as well in that he didnt want to interview with the Seahawks either... just my thought.

Cmon Buddy snatch up your old picks

trade marshawn, roscoe and a 6th, then swing a sign and trade for McNeil and LT... just a dream i know -
more then anything, that last win of the season seems ages ago. it was a fun game. it was fun seeing hte players enjoying themselves in the snow. it reminds you of what playoff football in buffalo is supposed to be like. We need help on offense big time. Frazier is fine, a dominant defense is nice, but in the end, we need a competent OC. Mularkey wasn't it, AVP wasn't, etc. There aren't many offensive minds out there, so Fassel or Martz for OC might be nice. I still like Trestmant as HC though.
-
this guy has had a pretty successful career on the offensive side of hte ball. at the VERY least he deserves a chance at NFL OC again but i think he should really be considered for HC. Marv has apparently been "mentoring" him as well, which isn't a bad thing. he seemed to have a big impact on kosar, was with the 49ers during SY's best years, helped SCOTT MITCHELL and Jake PLummer have good seasons. and he was the OC of those Super Bowl raiders in 2002. frankly, i think he could be the best "diamond in the rough" candidate out there. he has been an assistant HC at the NFL level and has prior head coaching experience, all be it, north of the border. in addition, it might help sell more tickets to loyal CFL fans who follow him and the alouettes. All i'm saying is we don't need the same thing again - another 4-3 defensive "guru." we need a shot in the arm. Montreal has helped us before (see polian and marv) and the CFL as a whole has (flutie).... so why are more of us not pushing for this? his resume, especially in the passing game, is much better then schott jrs... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marc_Trestman

Our own Tim Graham's take on Bills' search
rpcolosi replied to San Jose Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
nicely done sir.. -
little of both. the ones of sanchez were gifts to a degree. some of the others were excellent reads. the kids got a knack. 5+ INTS again next year and I'll be convinced he is a legit FS, the likes of which we haven't seen since Kelso...
