  1. The Bills may have a coach but the rumors aren't stopping. ESPN.com's Tim Graham is reporting that Marty Schottenheimer wanted the job badly but Ralph Wilson didn't want him as the next head coach. Publicly Schottenheimer stated he wasn't interested in returning to coaching but people close to him told ESPN that he wanted the job. It would have reunited him with his good friend Buddy Nix and you would think Nix would have given him the job if Wilson signed off on it. No word on why Wilson didn't want Schottenheimer to coach. This could also explain why is son Brian wouldn't interview for the job.

    rip van winkle bobcat ??

  2. Frankly the Bills are more likely to move to Toronto than LA. Even then I can see the NFL insist that some games still be played in Buffalo. The economy sucks but the fan base doesn't deserve to lose it's team so that may be the compromise.

    PTR

again, i agree with you......toronto is now part of the bills market......the nfl and any future owner would be foolish to give that up......as long as we continue sellouts we keep the team......i do see the NFL going to an 18 game seasson with less pre season games. thats 9 home games.......i could easily see 2-3 home games in toronto, eventually.

  3. Don't forget the Chargers started in Los Angeles. They want a new stadium but aren't getting one from the taxpayers. Move them 80 miles north and call them the SoCal Chargers. Would it suck for SD fans? Sure, but at least they could still drive 90 minutes and follow their team.

    PTR

yours is the most likely scenario. then one of the Oak/SF teams, Jax, STL & Min. the bills would NEVER move while Ralph is alive.

  4. Do you know that nevergiveup works for the Bills? You know something the rest of us don't? You can't just assume he/she does because of this accurate information -- lots of ways for information to slip.

what is your point...where are you going with this ??..

nevergiveup tells us a few hours ahead of anyone else that the bills will name Nix GM ?........how does he benefit from that?? (other than gaining street cred on a message board ??)

  5. Hmmm, and just WHO, NeverGiveUp, might be one to leak information prematurely?!! Seems YOU had some recent "inside info" on the Nix hire and on the Gailey hire. Wouldn't you call THAT a premature release of information? I only hope you don't have a fiduciary relationship with the team. Of course, I'm not sure which is worse -- someone on the inside leaking information prematurely or someone on the outside finding out so easily.

organizations (someone on the inside) intentionally "leak" (premature release) information all the time for various reasons, it's normal practice. they obviously have a fiduciary relationship, they work there.

those who receive these tips, never reveal their source or it would be cut off.

  6. This.

As for the timing of the release, it should be blatantly obvious by now that just like the New Year's Eve-afternoon PC to introduce Nix and the scant advance notice given when Fewell was named the interim HC (Jauron "officially" fired at 3pm, Fewell promotion not announced until almost 7pm for an 8:30pm PC when several of the beat guys have an hour-plus commute to the stadium), someone in the PR dept. is deliberately trying to manipulate coverage.

Unless they're either being told to do so by someone further up the chain of command, or merely incompetent.

If I had written that blog post re:the midnight massacre, I wouldn't have been nearly as polite.

"someone in the PR dept. is deliberately trying to manipulate coverage."...

(my guess Scott Berchtold, with buddy's approval)....i agree with you, something is up, there is no doubt.....but to me, it appears to be directed at the bills preventing the "local" media from scooping or getting the jump on the national media. eventually the news is what it is.....it will get sliced and diced no matter what time it comes out....just like this John Guy story. the bills do seem to have their favorites (Murphy & Gaughn locally, Berman & Carucci nationally to name a few). probably those who have been kinder and gentler.

  7. Interesting osbservation...I am located in VA and I have worked with Southern based companies and I have found all types of people with southern accents. Some are extremely intelligent and some are aren't. I have notice one thing, people with various accents are often poked fun at. When people poke fun at Al Davis' New York accent do you assume they are unintelligent...probably not. When you here people poke fun at the New England accent do you assume they are unintelligent....probably not. I do notice that people from the south tend to be more self conscious about it than others.

One assumption that I made when watching the conference is that we have an "old boy" network at work here and I am not sure how a Leslie Frazier would have fit in no matter how good he is. When Marv Levy was GM he no doubt picked Dick Jauron based on the intellectually stimulating conversations they have had about books that Oprah's book of the month club have recommended. Both GM's brought in people that they could relate to on a personal level. I think this more than often can deter people from making the best decision. Lets not ignore the obvious but lets not assume the negative toward Nix and Gailey or the people that may poke fun at them.

I'm obvious a Bills fan and will always be one and as Chan said winning will quiet the naysayers. I just hope they can take us to the playoffs and win the SB.

i used to travel alot....my customer in texas, all the butt of their jokes were to Louisiana. my customer in cincinnati oh, they picked on kentucky. my customer in alabama, they picked on folks from the north (yankees). whats my point?.....everyone pokes fun at someone.......doesn't make it right......it's just the way it is.

Gailey spent his first day on the job trying to put together a coaching staff. Chances are good that finding a defensive coordinator is at the top of his priority list.

The Denver Post reported the Bills requested permission from the Broncos to speak with Mike Nolan, but he agreed to become Miami's defensive guru before the Bills introduced Gailey as their new coach. The fact that the Bills reportedly were interested in Nolan is another indication that Gailey is serious about trying to switch to the 3-4 defense.

Clancy Pendergast ran the 3-4 in Kansas City, though he was recently demoted after just one year as defensive coordinator. Pendergast also ran a 3-4 part of the time in Arizona in 2008. He was a defensive assistant under Gailey in Dallas, and they worked together for eight months in Kansas City in 2009 before Gailey was fired by first-year head coach Todd Haley.

Another coordinator with 3-4 experience is Tim Lewis, currently the secondary coach in Seattle. Lewis was Bill Cowher's defensive coordinator in Pittsburgh from 2000 to '03 but was fired because, according to reports, his style was not aggressive enough for Cowher's liking.

Jim Bates was Gailey's defensive line coach in Dallas and was Miami's defensive coordinator when Gailey ran the Dolphins' offense. Bates, who has been unemployed since being fired in midseason by Tampa Bay, is a proven coach, but he only runs the 4-3 defense. Bates also is the opposite of Gailey in a key way. While Gailey tailors his offensive system to the talent available, Bates' style of defense is not as flexible. He tries to make the talent fit the scheme he runs.

Gailey's defensive coordinator when he was the Cowboys' head coach was Dave Campo. But like much of that staff, he was a holdover from the Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer regimes. Campo, who succeeded Gailey as head coach in Dallas and is currently its secondary coach, is from the 4-3 school like Bates.

Jon Tenuta served as Gailey's defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech. Tenuta's most recent job was as Charlie Weis' linebackers coach at Notre Dame. Tenuta has been mostly a 4-3 guy and has not worked in the NFL.

Another option could be Dean Pees, who stepped down last week as defensive coordinator in New England. He is being courted by Denver.

  9. wins = respect

it's that simple....we desrve all the negative comments we get.

however, the beauty of the NFL is that there are many, many examples of teams that turn around their fortunes in just one or two years.

there is hope in bills land:

the bills finally have a proven talent evaluator in Nix. they have alot of room under the salary cap to sign Free Agents. unlike perception, the bills are NOT cheap (they had the 12th highest salary last year) they just have not spent it wisely.

  10. Tim wouldn't have seen Murph's sportscast (at 11:25, not 11:00), because he's in New Jersey covering the Jets. His timeline is correct on the press release.

we all love Tim Graham and appreciate his contributions to this forum..

i'm confusing the point i was trying to make......let me take another stab at it....... this is much less about the exact time line and more about the shot he took at the bills for releasing the info so late, after the local late night TV news and buffalo news deadlines to include in early editions of their newspaper.

(PRO/Nuetral -bills) he could have simply said "Bills announced late wednesday night" (like most sources did).

(ANTI-bills) instead he comes out swinging by taking a shot at the bills by saying "The Buffalo Bills waited until the local news was off the air and the early editions of Thursday's newspaper had been put to bed before sending out a two-sentence press release at 11:37pm to announce they have fired vice president of pro personnel John Guy".

now, some folks will say, he's just doing his job, by pointing out that is an unusual time to release an important announcement (like PFT is doing). he initially released the anti-bills version......then later shortened it to what i call the pro-bill version. it just makes me wonder if he is pro, anti or nuetral towards the bills.

  11. You might be right that Florence will be on the bench when McKelvin is healthy. Unfortunate, only because Florence has proven that he can be a starter.

I still think Florence was a significant pick-up though.

    yes.......have to add the following.....

London Fletcher, Takeo Spikes, Sam Adams and Geoff Hangartner.

    Marcus Stroud thru trade.
