  1. It's some highlights of the Denver game and focuses on Dareus on and off the field. I love how Florence was talking some smack with him at the end.

    Linky

This was great to see. Thanks for posting. I've always been big on Dareus and I think even with Super Mario, he'll be our best defensive player next year and years to come. Reminds me of Warren Sapp.

  2. Graham won't start this year. He is raw. Nelson is a slot and is too slow to be starting receiver in the nfl. Easley, Hagan or Jones will battle it out. Jones might have failed to impress last year but it was his first year as a starter and he's very early in his career. Easley showed flashes in pre season and no one knows exactly what he will bring. Hagan did a solid job when he was given the opportunity.

Either one of those three can be serviceable but my hope is that Easley takes this job and runs with it.

  3. I know I'll get flamed for this, but I think Derek Hagan is going to start until Marcus Easley is ready. If he can stay healthy, he's the #2.

Let's put it this way. If I had to pick a #2 not including Easley it would be Hagan. He has good speed and he was the 3rd best receiver on the team last year imo. I think it comes down between Hagan and Easley for #2. Graham is way too raw. He'll be the 4th receiver and 3rd receiver in certain packages.

  4. In order

    1) Thurman Thomas (Best player we've had since I've been a fan)

    2) Jim Kelly (The leader during the glory years)

    3) Bruce Smith (How many times did he get that sack on 3rd down when we really needed it)

    4) Eric Moulds (A prototype receiver who would have been a hof on a different team)

    5) Antoine Winfield (Tackling machine with very good cover skills and tremendous heart)

    Least Favorite In Order

    1) Ledois Mckelvin (Bone head play after bone head play; still steaming over that fumble to the Patriots)

    2) Lee Evans (good one dimensional player but complained way too much)

    3) Whoever played corner back opposite Nate Odoms (Nothing but bums opposite him)

    4) Mike Mularkey (quit on us. And you were not as good as advertised)

    5) Tom Donahoe (whatever you did to old man Ralph, sent us to a decade of cheap spending and marketing guys running the team)

    Favorite Current bills

    1) Stevie Johnson - The only reason why we even get mentioned on Espn or nfl net. Plus a very solid #1 receiver

    2) Marcel Dareus - The best defensive football player we have

    3) George Wilson - In spirts he showed game changing elite level safety play on par with any of the current greats. Hard to believe he was a bench warming wideout.

    4) Ryan Fitzpatrick - I like the swag, the beard and has the best nickname in the biz "The Omish Riffle"

    5) Chan Gailey - A breath of fresh air after the other goons we had. Seeing him with those glasses holding that sheet calling out plays makes me feel that we are headed in the right direction. I just hope we diversify from all the short stuff and I hope we establish the run a little more out of 2 back sets.

  5. 1 -- The importance of a Left Tackle is highly exaggerated by fans and media. NFL coaches will often refer to "tackles" being important. Not just the left tackle. It wasn't until the mid 90's that the Left Tackle position became glorified and sought over exclusively. The LT is seen as more important because he protects the majority of QB's blindside, and as a result many of the better defensive athletes start their DE career at RDE (from college up to pro).

As far as skill set goes, a good LT is presumed to have good footwork. Their backpedal is smooth, their stance is wide but strong, and they are able to chop their feet and swivel their hips in an arc like motion while maintaining upper body strength and a strong platform with their legs. However, a good RT has much of the same attributes. A large arm span is also a notable attribute, as it is reasonable to assume that the larger your arm span, the longer your arms are. With the long arms and a strong upper body, you can "chuck" and keep the defender further away from your body and therefore further away from your QB.

    2 -- Levitre's arm span is 32.5 inches.

    3 -- N/A

4 -- OLB's is a 3-4 are glorified DE's. In fact, if you look at an ALL-22 field camera for a majority of 3-4 plays, you will notice that the OLB's are in nearly the same position and stance as a 4-3 DE.

5 -- A good backup player is a player with the skill set and drive to play at a level that is reasonably sufficient to the demands of the team for that particular position. A good backup does not have to play similarly in style or level to the starter. He simply has to play at a level that gives the team a reasonable chance to win a game without the starter in play.

Great post. I learned alot. Great thread also. Many of the questions I wondered about but never thought of asking.

  6. How exactly is Cousins going to improve his value on that team over the next 2-3 years? Showing how well he holds a clipboard? He doesn't even have a veteran starter to learn under.

I think you argue just to argue -- when you're a team that just came off a 5-11 season, you don't (or shouldn't) have the luxury of taking a "value pick" at a position you don't need, rather than continuing to fill holes on your roster.

To my original point -- what has Shanahan done to suggest he would have been the better choice in Buffalo, and which of these two teams is in a better position to become very good, soon?

Do you know what Matt Schaub, Rob Johnson, Matt Flynn, Matt Cassell, Kevin Kolb, etc etc all have in common? They WERE backups to established

quarterbacks that ended up being a starter elsewhere and given a big contract. Kirk Cousins will follow the same path.

  7. let's not over react because the skins used "a 4th round pick" on a qb. You all act like that 4th round pick would have netted them a pro bowler.

If kirk counsins is as good as advertised, the skins will get a 1st rounder when they trade him in 2 or 3 years.

To the point about Shanahan, they guy can coach offensive football. Say what you want about him being a head coach/gm but as far as offensive football the guy is up there with the best that are currently coaching. The way he would script the first 15 or so calls at the beginning of games during the 90s was good stuff.

When the Bills lost out on Shanny I was so upset. I remember when the Bills announced they were going to hire Gailey, I almost threw up. Then after a few days, I started to warm up to the idea a bit. The more and more I thought about it, the more I started to warm up to it. Seeing him on the sideline with the playchart and always talking to the qb made me feel comfortable compared to the hands off coaches we had in he past. I wouldnt trade Gailey for Shanney at all.

Keep this in mind though, Gailey is entering into the last year of his contract. He may very well be on the hot seat.

  8. There was/is only one position on the roster that we needed to draft a starter on day one. You know which one that is? A receiver. We have a legit #1 in Stevie. We have a strong number #3 in Nelson and then we have a bunch of fours and fives. We do not have a #2 receiver on this roster. Easley did look really good last year in pre season. I really feel like we messed up not getting Floyd. Or moving up on day 2 and getting quick out of appalachin state. That kid look like he would be the perfect fit in our system.

And as for Glynn. Sheesh. The stinch of Mike Williams is all over that pick. I am sure even Jamie Nails think this guy is too big and slow. I really hope they address the receiver void on this roster.

  9. This is the type of thread you get during the off season. It doesnt matter who the offensive coordinator is, as long as Chan Gailey is the HC, he is calling the plays. End of Story. Picking on Modkins??? Are you serious?? The guy has worked with Gailey for years and probably does a good job of emphasizing the things that are important to Gailey.

  10. I would rather see t.o. back but have no problems with Lee Evans coming back at a minimum salary and competing for a spot. Say what you want about Lee Evans but I bet you he is faster than any of the receivers on the Bills roster to this day (not counting Roscoe who isn't on our roster).

I tell you this though, Haggan to me is the best receiver on our roster outside of Stevie and D. nelson.

I would not mind entering the season with the following 6 receivers. (since we run so many 4 sets anyway) op S. Johnson, Easley, Parish, Nelson and Haggan and D. Jones. With the Bills system, rac guys are really valued.

Also, I would not mind seeing Maybin back at a low salary. He produced last year more than Merriman did in his last two years.

    Good thread!!

  11. RDE: Williams

    DT: Williams

    DT: Dareus (3 technique)

    LDE: Kelsay

    WLB: Merriman

    ILB: Shepard

    SLB: Barnett

    CB: McGee

    CB: Williams

    FS: Byrd

    SS: Wilson

3rd/Nickel is Florence although Williams will play actual nickle spot

I expect Bills to draft melvin ingram in 1st round

  12. I agree with your entire post. On O, WR is a critical priority and I wouldn't mind acquiring two. While I think a speed guy is important, I have to agree that Fitz is not the best QB to take advantage of that skill set as his accuracy downfield plain sucks.

Lets see who we get but even if we get one of the remaining WRs, I wouldnt put it past the FO to not further address that position in the draft.

What about T.O. or Lee Evans???

I know I'll get flamed but 2 seasons ago. When he had a receiving core which featured S. Johnson, L. Evans, R. Parish and D. Nelson they were moving the ball up and down the field.

  13. Nix tied up millions in Shawne Merriman, who aside from selling some jerseys, has done jack and squat now in the 15 months he's been on Buffalo's roster.

As for cap space, all it takes is a signed letter from the owner to get another 21M on top of the reportedly 20-22M (before any roster cuts) to work with.

Buddy tied up millions in Merriman?? I don't think so.
