Kyle "Rolling Ball of Butcher Knives" Williams
vincec replied to cale's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That's what I saw too. The DE's losing contain and the linebackers over-pursuing. There were a couple of straight ahead dives off tackle, but very little between the tackles. For the Bills to improve against the run, not only do they need better linebackers, but they need better DEs also. -
Suh will be #1 or #2 overall, so I doubt that the Bills will have a shot at him. Buffalo had better not take a QB either, unless they want another one to get his butt kicked and lose his confidence behind a poor OL. The pick HAS to be OL. From what I read, the best is OT Russell Okung from OK State. Several preliminary mock drafts have TB taking him, if they finish worse than the Bills, but he would be the guy to target even if Buffalo has to move up a spot or two. BTW- If the Bills finish so badly that they draft #1 or #2 and Suh is available, they should absolutely take him. Take the best available player in the #1 or #2 spots regardless of position and Suh is the guy.

Where is Joe Namath on these lists? He was better than half the guys being talked about (like Bradshaw). I doubt that many QBs could've played in Namath's his era and put up the numbers he did. Also, Montana was great but he is the #1 beneficiary of the changes in passing rules and Bill Walsh's "west coast offense". If Dan Marino would've played for Walsh people would be talking about his records like they do about Gretzky's in hockey. As to the original question. I think Kelly was slightly better than Fouts. Fouts was a great passer, probably even better than Kelly, but he lacked Kelly's leadership skills. If I had to take one for a big game, it would be Kelly.

Yes. More than any other position in the No Fun League, the QB is developed by the pro staff. The pro passing game is very different from the college game. That is why coaches like Mike Holmgren or Mike Shanahan always seem to have all pro QBs while Dick Jauron's QBs always stink.

The problems against the run are the linebackers, IMO. The DL has been very good, especially Stroud and Williams. Just look at their tackle totals. They've also generated a decent pass rush, although the DL still needs to improve in this area. I'd be for picking up Seymour if he could replace Kelsay and DE. Otherwise, he would be a good rotational player for a year or two with Williams and his price tag is probably too high for that.

Head coach of the New England Patriots

Miami went from 1-15 to 11-5 in one year. It can be done.

I know that things look bleak right now, but after thinking about a healthy Bills roster, I think that the Bills are one good draft and a new head coach away from turning things around. On offense we have two good running backs, a good interior OL, solid WRs and a good TE prospect. We need to draft a LT obviously. Given our record we should be able to get a very good one. If Brad Butler comes back, we may only need one new starter. We will also need another WR to replace TO. I think the key on offense will be a new coach and system to help TE. He is regressing every week but I think that he can be salvaged. Frankly, he was probably getting better coaching at Stanford than with the Bills. On defense we have a strong interior with good DTs and middle LB. We are deep at corner. We could use a bigger linebacker to play on the running downs and some future prospects at DE and DT but the rest is there. So... A new coach - the key. LT (starter) LB (starter) WR (prospect) DE (prospect) DT (prospect) We can do this next year.

What was the problem on defense? They allowed 6 points and 3 of them were a gift from our special teams unit. I'm sure we'll see Nic Harris now that everyone else is hurt. As for Steve Johnson... we could add Jerry Rice in his prime to the mix and he would probably not register a catch.

Folks, firing Jauron is not the answer

+ 3 wasted time outs, throwing a hail mary instead of trying a long field goal into the wind, absolutely no half time adjustments. -
Could this be the worst team ever?
vincec replied to Phil Hansen Forever's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It's definitely the worst offense ever... at least that I can remember, all the way back to 1979 or so. -
That was the worst football game I've ever seen... possibly the worst professional game ever played. Both offenses were utterly inept. Cleveland won even though their QB completed 2 passes all day. What was his QB rating? 4? It's not like the defenses were dominating. The Bills couldn't do anything because of atrocious offensive line play, a ridiculous number of penalties, poor decision making by the QB, wasted time outs and bad coaching. Cleveland was no better. Their receivers can't catch a cold and they couldn't even run it on a Bills team with only one starting linebacker left playing. What was Eric Mangini smiling about after the game? Isn't he supposed to be an offensive genius? This was truly painful to watch. It was like a blooper reel that lasted an entire game.

Do you blame Edwards for being shell-shocked?
vincec replied to LGB's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
How can you possibly judge any player who is being coached by Jauron accurately? DJ can turn a HOF wide receiver who has averaged over 1,000 yards and 10 tds per season over his career into a non-factor. If Edwards spent a couple of years playing for Mike Shanahan, I'll bet that he would start to look a lot better. -
Could be the last time we are favored to win

If Ralph fears for his own job...
vincec replied to Coach Klein's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
My thinking also. I think that Wilson believes he is too old to start over and that's the main reason he didn't dump Jauron last year. It was wishful thinking mostly. I think that he has other things on his mind these days besides the Bills. -
I know that this sentiment may not be shared by very many people here, but I want to say that I admire Dick Jauron's character. I watch his press conferences and I am struck by how candid he is under the worst possible conditions and how ready he is to take the blame for his players, even when some of them (like TE) deserve a lot more than he does. I've been there and it takes a tremendous amount of perspective on life and courage to behave the way he does. I knoe people here hate him for not blowing up like Jim Mora or Denny Green, but the fact is, he is a bigger man than them. Unfortunately, this does not change the fact that he has not gotten the job done and needs to go. He is accountable for his teams performance and he knows this better than anyone. I don't revel in this. I really wish that he had done better here.

Me too. Best available player at one of these positions.

whats up with Jauron and his sunglasses?
vincec replied to freester's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I believe the correct term would be "psychological victory". I don't see how anything that happens on the football field can represent a "moral victory" unless it's the forces of good versus evil or something. -
Was Josh Reed Down On Infamous 3rd Down?
vincec replied to truth on hold's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You shouldn't risk challenging that call because you need your time outs at the end of a close game that you are currently losing. You just need to go for it to try and light a charge under your team and stop playing Russian roulette with the Saints offense. I know, percentages, blah blah blah, but anyone with a feeling for the pulse of the game knew that we needed to go for that. -

Jauron: "... a disappointing loss, the guys really fought hard... I tip my hat to our efforts and our toughness." He tips his hat to our efforts????!!! Classic. He should really be wearing a bag over his head, not just the sun glasses. Maybe he's working his way up to it. -
Just got home from the game...this is how N.O. Stopped us.

I saw this too. It's surprisingly common. I saw the same the same thing with Indianapolis and the NY Giants. It's not always an audible from a pass to a run, it's often a called run where the QB decides where the play is going based on the defense that he sees and communicates this to the team at the line of scrimmage. It's pretty effective, especially if once in a while the audible is to a play action pass that goes over the top of a safety that is cheating up based on the audible. On another note... We make it way to easy for the defense to double team the guys they want to. TO and Evans are very easy to find. They are ALWAYS on opposite sides of the formation and ALWAYS the wide receivers. If they would line them up in the slot, in the backfield, as a wing-back, on the same side, etc. then it wouldn't be so easy.
