  1. My Great Uncle is very old, he's in his 90s and he's lived a full, active and successful life. He owns my favorite house in the world - a beautiful mansion south of Buffalo. There are only about 30 of its kind. It was once one of the very best of its kind, but recently it has fallen into disrepair. My family and I visit the house every fall weekend, but the last few years' visits have not been nearly as enjoyable given the condition of the place. Nothing would make me happier than to see the house restored to its glory. I know that with the proper caretaker, it could be done. The problem is my Great Uncle - he won't ever hire the proper caretaker. He doesn't want to spend the money for the best caretakers, and even if he did, they wouldn't want to put up with his meddlesome ways. And so the house continues to languish, and my family cannot enjoy it any longer.

And because of this, I have bad thoughts. Not all the time, just some times. But more often lately. Those thoughts are these: I sometimes wish my Great Uncle would pass over into the next life already, so that we could celebrate his memory by restoring the house to its prior glory.

Am I a bad person? I guess so. What do you think? I'm torn. I love my Great Uncle, but I also love the house, and I want my children to be able to enjoy the house like I did when I was a youth.

I think you need to call Dr. Laura, and hope Uncle Russ tells Uncle Ralph to spare no expense in fixing his house!

  2. Listening to Gil Brandt on Sirius NFL radio is becoming more and more like listening to Grandpa Simpson. He starts every call with a left field factoid leaving the caller dumbfounded. "Hey Bill from Buffalo, did you know that brown chickens lay brown eggs?" "Uhhhhhhh, yeah...about the Bills coaching search..."

    PTR

Another hilarious "PTR" quote! My fav is still the one where Ralph Wilson "traded for a cardboard cut-out of Peyton Manning!"

  3. I always thought that Wade got a screwed when he was fired, and the Bills have been collecting bad kharma every since. Too bad that I hate the Cowboys . . .

Ya, Wade was a good guy and still is. I can't believe the biggest criticism Bills fans had of him (other than his special teams coach, Ronnie Jones) was that he didn't wear a headset. Remember that?

Now, that seems so trivial, doesn't it?

  4. This is not good. If Holmgren didn't think he could get Cowher he would not get rid of Mangini, especially the way the Browns finished the year with four straight wins. Remember, Cowher played and coached for the Browns before going to Pittsburgh, and would be a natural fit in that town.

I'm sure Holmgren already has a coach in mind - and it is likely not Cowher.

  5. He was hired by Butler in 1993, so probably didn't play much of a role in the 1993 draft. Still, I'm including it, but I'm not attaching comments. Here's a look at the SEC guys they drafted along with guys from that general region (who he presumably scouted for Butler).

    1993:

    Thomas Smith (rd 1, UNC)

    Russell Copeland (rd 3, Memphis)

Sebastian Savage (rd 5, NC State)

Willie Harris (rd 7, Miss. State)

    1994:

Bucky Brooks (rd 2, UNC) - may well have been a very good player if not for a devastating knee injury

Friggin' Lonnie (rd 2, second pick, FSU) - not a complete bust, but not certainly not a great pick

Marlo Perry (rd 3, Jackson State) - decent but certainly not great production for a 3rd rounder

Courey Louchiey (rd 4, South Carolina) - basically sucked, but all fourth rounders are reaches at some level

Sean Crocker (rd 4, UNC) - who?

Anthony Abrams (rd 6, Clark Atlanta)

    Kevin Knox (rd 6, FSU)

    1995:

Damien Covington (rd 3, NC State) - good pick; played like a demon before a career ending injury

Ken Irvin (rd 4, Memphis) - good pick

    1996:

Eric Moulds (rd 1, Miss. State) - home run

Gabe Northern (rd 2, LSU) - ground out

Matt Stevens (rd 3, Appalachian State) - all in all, a good pick; played a number of years in the league; bad luck w/injuries

    1997:

(Note: I'm not sure if he was involved with the U of Houston program - Antowain Smith [rd 1] and Marcus Spriggs [rd 6]. I'm guessing not.)

Jamie Nails (rd 4, Florida A & M) - typical Bills OT pick in the 90s (big and slow), but lasted long enough to justify his pick

Sean Woodson (rd 5, Jackson State)

    1998:

Sam Cowart (rd 2, FSU) - home run; as good as Ray Lewis before the injury

Robert Hicks (rd 3, Ole Miss) - a bust, more or less; typical Bills OT pick - huge guy w/out much mobility

Jonathan Linton (rd 5, UNC) - not great, but not horrible production for a fifth rounder. He led the Bills in rushing in 2000.

    1999:

Peerless Price (rd 2, Tennessee) - good pick

Shawn Bryson (rd 3, Tennessee) - good pick; possibly a home run if not for the injuries. That guy was a talent.

Keith Newman (rd 4, UNC) - good pick

Bobby Collins (rd 4, N. Alabama) - not what we had hoped (he allegedly was talented)

    2000:

Travares Tillman (rd 2, Georgia Tech) - bad pick, but I don't blame Nix. The Bills desperately needed a safety and reached after Deon Grant (Tennessee) went the pick before Tillman. They really, really wanted Mike Brown, but he went earlier that round. After that, they wanted Grant, but lost out. They settled for Tillman, which was a bad move in the end.

Corey Moore (rd 3, Virginia Tech) - not a good pick; small and quick guy who couldn't play LB

Avion Black (rd 4, Tennessee State) - amounted to nothing

Instead of comparing Nix's Bills drafts to Chargers drafts, we should compare both of those groups to the Bills' 2001-2008 drafts.

  6. Schopp frequently gets under people's skin (which ultimately is at least part of his job) because he's short with people who - for whatever reason - don't come off sounding very intelligent on the radio. I listen fairly regularly, and I can't remember too many cases (if any) where an intelligent-sounding caller was treated poorly or in a condescening manner. The guys that fail with Schopp are the cliche repeaters.

I like that he has opinions and that a lot of his opinions are objectively defensible (such as by use of actual data), and often diametrically opposed to the boring, old (and frequently wrong) football cliches.

His chip-on-the-shoulder about insufficient media access from One Bills Drive isn't really all that revealing, nor particularly unique. He's far from the only media member with that complaint.

True, good points. However, you'd think that the afternoon drive host in an NFL town (and NHL) would have a host who at least was interested in football and cared somewhat about the team. How many times has Schlepp complained that he's not a fan of football, but rather, tennis? He should work for Sirius ATP Radio.. oh, wait, they don't have a Tennis channel.

  7. The media needs the Bills much more than they need the media. Maybe if they put thier ego's aside for 2 minutes they might be able to build a relationship over there. Schopp is a complete joke as a broadcaster. Sirius radio is a great thing.

I agree with you 100%. When Schlepp goes on the air, I tune my Sirius to NFL Radio. I also prefer listening to Cowherd than Rome.

Both ESPN and Sirius NFL Radio are much more respectful of their callers than Mike Schlepp ever has been. He's a complete buffoon.

  8. I cant believe i never heard of this till just now

    http://www.nytimes.com/1998/02/11/sports/p...r-contract.html

whats interesting is that if he had played out the contract he would have easily started over Dilfer and got his revenge on the Giants in SB XXXV

Kelly wanted to play for Marchibroda. But, mainly due to his son's health at the time, he thought it best to spend time with his family.... at least that's how I remember this played out.

  9. Is Demetrious Bell a little gunshy or disheartened? He should have returned to practice according to Bills trainers considering the injury he sustained. He should be at least practicing but for some unkown reason he says he can't go...why? Were the events of this year too much for him mentally or is he protecting himself? Unless his injury is more serious than reported he should either be back to work or on IR so we can pick up another practice squad scrub to replace him. My guess would be a little lack of heart, cuz if he can go then he should. Granted he should have been no more than a swing tackle for us this year and an emergency starter for a game or two only, he is in way over his head this year. If he continues to hold himself out of practice and games then put him on IR or kick his ass back onto the field, becasue we need the bodies. Nobody is at 100% this time of the year so suck it up and play like a warrior.

Seriously, at this point, who cares? My guess would be he's dying to get back on the field, but his injury is bad enough to prevent him to.
