  1. Difference between Jerry Jones and Ralph - or most owners for that matter - is that Ralph's team is in fact taking taxpayer money for the improvements to the stadium, and plenty of teams hold their communities hostage in this way. I can't champion the great entrepreneur when he's just using the powers of wealth, influence and leverage to extort money from taxpayers. If more of that money goes to players instead of to people who are beyond wealthy, I have zero problem with it, and I can't call the player greedy if greed is the foundation for some of these owners.

The question here is not about greed. It's about what Byrd's market rate is. That will be established this spring.

At the same time I recognize the value of a good attitude and my favorite players are the ones who let the business side of it take care of itself. FWIW.

We seem to forget that private ventures outside of sports get tax benefits all the time. We hear far more whining for those benefits about sports franchise but if Xerox, IBM, or Wind stream want tax breaks to setup shop there are very few vocal critics. There is a double standard and I am not sure why that is.

  2. with regards to the nfl and social issues -- they are also threatening to pull the super bowl from arizona next year due to the discrimination legislation. wouldnt happen, but its still getting involved in social issues.

Why wouldn't it happen? They have done it before ... not sure why you you think they wouldn't do it again.

  3. The Bills finally build that O line thru the draft by taking an OT, OG, TE with the first three picks, in any order.

They sign Dexter McCluster away from the Chiefs, and he, Spiller, Jackson terrorize opponents. Spiller has a breakout year and rushes for 1800+ yards

EJ starts to develop into a franchise QB, and throws for 3000+ yards.

( one bold prediction) Thus, with a new solid O line the Bills sweep the Patriots, Jets, Dolphins and win the division, and make the playoffs. :D

So that is their yearly 6 wins? :flirt:

They have to win a few more for your prediction to come true

  4. You are generalizing without knowing what held things back. The big reason was the NFTA which for some reason controlled all the Buffalo waterfront. What changed is NFTA giving up control to the city. That, plus Brian Higgins got things moving. Mayor Brown did a lot to clear a path, but the A-numero-uno reason is Terry "Daddy Warbucks" Pegula. You need a billionaire patron and Buffalo has one now.

The group you are referring to is sort of an outlier. It's not government stopping them. Even the Bills are not interested in what that group is saying. And don't kid yourself. NOTHING gets done privately without government being involved at some level.

    PTR

One has to wonder why that is. I someone else builds a stadium and they can play there why would the Bills or any other team with the a similar option turn that down.

  5. Hope the series goes deep six, from the article;

"Brandon provided an update on another front. Without going into detail, he said he's had discussions with Rogers Communications regarding the team's concerns about its annual "Bills In Toronto" series.

Brandon questioned the benefits of the series following a 34-31 overtime loss to Atlanta at Toronto on Dec. 1. He wondered about the Bills possibly giving away a home-field edge by playing indoors.

Brandon has not ruled out the possibility of the Bills pulling out of the remaining four years of the series. "

I wonder if they will just open the roof and see how that plays out. I am pretty sure the Rogers Center has a retractable roof ... doesn't it?

I don't think Byrd wants to stay and I believe that the Bills, Rogers Communication, & NFL will come to a compromise agreement that will allow the Bills to fulfill their contract with the following changes:

    1. The Toronto game will no longer be a home game for the Bills.

    2. The opponent will not be a divisional team.

    3. The game will be a regular scheduled away game for both teams played at a neutral site.

I thought that this was a good compromise but again one of the reasons of the deal gave buffalo the rights to Toronto ... so making it a neutral site may not be what the Bills want.

  6. http://blogs.buffalo...fensive-scheme/

Pettine made the best use of the personnel on hand to make his scheme fit. I believe Schwartz will do the same.

Gailey wanted to make the defense into a 3-4 when he was first hired, when it wasn't suited for it. That bad memory is still fresh in a lot of people's minds.

This is one of the biggest issues in hiring new HC in my opinion. I know that a HC wants total control but when a certain segment of the team works well the GM should tell a new hire: "Hey, the Defense(or Offense) is the best performing segment of our team, We are keeping all the coaches and the players. Your job is to keep that going and fix the Offense(or Defense)."

The defense was good and just on the field too long in the Jauron era and the special teams was also good. Had we kept Fewell and April just imagine how much better those year would have been.

  7. Difference being of course is that Wade has been is one of the best DCs in the game over the last 20 years and would `be hired for that position, while Marv was brought in for a spot he's never done before, while being totally out of touch with the league for the previous decade.

I believe he was the GM in the CFL.

  8. Doesn't anyone remember what happened when Wade was fired from Buffalo? First of all he had taken the Bills to the playoffs, losing to the Titans on that botched call. Then he refused to fire his assistant coach and then HE was fired for what Ralph called insubordination, and Ralph tried to get out of paying Wade for the remaining years of his contract, which goes against all normal NFL practice. Eventually

Ralph backed down and paid Wade, but the damage to the Bills' reputation around the league was done. That, and firing Polian and Butler. We have never been taken seriously again, for good reason considering Jeff Littman is still counting Ralph's beans and preventing spending the money needed to build a strong team.

Wade might come back to a city he enjoyed, but I doubt he'd come back to Ralph's organization. Ralph might be a good guy, but he's got real jerks working for him, and a lot of good coaches and execs won't consider working in Buffalo until ownership changes hands.

I am not sure that is true ... I have heard Polian say he loved it in Buffalo and might consider returning, if the opportunity presented itself. Chan basically wanted to stay and would probably return too but it would be awkward at the moment. I think fans might make more of the bad blood then people around the NFL. The only person I think may really not like Buffalo is Donahue.

  9. It's not like he's applying for the assistant manager job at Domino's. He's interviewing to be the head coach of an NFL football team. You don't roll up and demand a multi-million $$ contract and free reign over a billion $ organization just so a bunch of dissaffected pissants posting on message boards will think you don't look "weak." This could be the opportunity of a lifetime for him and no one that matters is looking at the situation through the same prism you are.

No you are suppose to do your due diligence before you fire your head coach. That is why every other team has already hired coaches. The FO should have a list of names and have the vetted even before the first interview. I do not disagree with you that this is a lifetime opportunity, however, that does not make the coaching search look any less bush league when compared the how other teams perform coaching searching. This issue goes back to last year when they did the same sort of search and ended with Chud.

  10. Just reading some "insider" comments under a recent article on cleveland.com, and some are convinced Quinn is clearly the #1 target and has been all along...

Gase was their #1 target, and probably McDaniel second. At the moment it may be who they are hoping for but that doesn't make him there #1 target from the beginning.

Also, this seems basically like what played out last year with Chud, they waited so long that every other candidate was chosen our refused an interview. I really don't know how anyone would want that job unless they were desperate or with a clause that states if I get fired after one year I get a x amount bonus of the staff and myself(above what is left on my contract).

  11. I would say Kelly gets unfairly downgraded here because of fears that we are "homers," and elsewhere because he never won a Super Bowl. But because he started the "hurry up" offense that is used by everyone now, I think he belongs in the conversation. Also, any other QB get to 4 straight Super Bowls. NOPE. Winning a conference is very hard to do, I think that gets overlooked when discussing Kelly.

Kelly: Inventor of the hurry-up offense. Great under pressure. Perhaps the toughest QB to ever play the game. He often blocked for the RB's. And clutch at the end of the game.

    This not true.
