Curiously, after the 2010 season. Andy Reid fired Sean McDermott from his Eagles staff. Did he perceive some fundamental flaw in Sean's philosophy or actions that he concluded could not be fixed? Or maybe he was just dissatisfied with his DC's performance. It would be nice to know his reasoning at the time. I find that if you have to shout to get people to listen and get your point across then they're not interested in hearing what you're saying. These douches should just shut up and meet for coffee at the abortion clinic.

Well, when you lose any game by definition you come up short on scoring. Its just as valid to point out they gave up 4 points too many. What it comes down to is this. They can focus on marginally improving the offense to get another 20 or 30 yards a game and maybe 3 or 5 points a game during the regular season. But with a defense that sucks in the playoffs you're not sniffing the Super Bowl regardless of expending a lot of resources "bullet proofing" the offense. And we'll all be having the exact same conversation next January about how the Chiefs, or the Ravens, or maybe the Texans, beat the Bills by 4 points, something like 35 to 31 because the offense didn't score enough. Here's a fun fact: By my count, if KC's opponents would have scored 29 points in every game during the regular season they would have finished the season at 3-14.

I think a fallacy in the argument is that it will take more resources to take the offense from an A- to an A+ than it would to improve the defense from a D+ to a B-. Because its easier to improve something that's bad to average than it is to improve something that's excellent to close to perfection.

There's a few ways to look at this but the way I see it is this. I think they play a low risk, ball control type of game because our defense isn't very good. And against the good play off teams the margin of error is basically zero. The way I look at the game on Sunday was even if Kincaid caught that ball and the Bills scored a TD to end that drive, the defense would have rolled over and played dead one more time to allow the Chiefs to march down the field in 5 or 6 plays with a minute or so and score a game winning TD. They play ball control to keep the D off the field. If the D was top 5 they'd open it up and put more stress on the other team's D and their offense to keep up.

I think its an unrealistic expectation that you're going to build an offense that is so dominant that it doesn't punt in a conference final playoff game against what is usually the better defenses and coaches. It would be more effective to add a genuine WR1 to the offense and then focus on the defense to add a few difference makers that can pressure the QB, stop the run, actually cover a receiver (or at least be in the TV picture when the receiver catches the ball) to produce a defense that can hold the opposition to around 20 points and force them to punt more than twice. And not give up 19 plays of 10 or more yards in a conference championship game. I'd like to stop watching Bills games and praying in front of the screen that the defense can actually make a big stop or big play against a team like the Chiefs or Ravens without having to depend on a turnover or the other guy screwing something up. This defense is the problem, it has been, and it we'll be the reason this team fails to advance in the 2025 post season unless Beane and McDermott fix the problem this off season.

This for me, is the team's biggest problem. I'll say I don't care if the go WR, DT, DE, Safety, or whatever position with the picks. The guy just needs to perform at a high level. I think Beane sees himself as some sort of contrarian thinker. Always trying to prove the consensus wrong. A guy that sees things that others miss. He's like the stock market experts that's telling you the market is going to crash while its going up 10,000 points over a period of a couple years. That's part of the reason we got Josh Allen. The Bills didn't out-maneuver other teams to get Josh. A lot of "experts" saw him as a bust. The consensus was he was wildly inaccurate and might be a serviceable starter. Josh was a contrarian pick. With the Allen pick Beane has proved most of the other experts wrong. But lots of his other picks just turned out to be bad choices. What Beane and McDermott need to do is start listening to the consensus for the draft. If 100 other experts say player A is the pick and they think its B then they're probably wrong.

A common theme in these playoff match ups is the KC defense makes life more difficult for the Buffalo offense to score and move the ball than does the Buffalo defense for the KC offense to score and move the ball. As you point out, the Bills scored more than 28 points in both games this season. And while we here, me included, point out the end of game failures of the offense because its the thing that ends the chance of winning, its the defense that is the weak link here. And what if by some chance the defense had an opportunity to hold the Chiefs to 3 and out (and likely kick a FG) after the failed 4th down pass to Kincaid and give the offense one more chance with the ball to win? Well the did, and they failed. What it comes down to is we need a few better players on defense to get over the hump here. The front 4 and the secondary, particularly the safety positions. That's all on the GM to address. Unfortunately, its been the same script here for 3 or 4 seasons. The OP says the Chiefs are one step ahead but I think the problem is the Bills are one step behind.

Which left me wondering why the official with the better view the ball didn't overrule the official with no view of the ball.

Watching the game and then re-watching parts of it the day after I came away with thinking the deciding difference between the two teams is the Bills had to fight for every inch of ground on offense while the Chiefs moved the ball with relative ease with the exception of a few drives. Even on the drives where they scored the Bills faced critical 3rd and 4th down situations. By my count the Chiefs had 19 offensive plays that gained 10 yards or more. I don't think focusing on the Bills offensive shortcomings against the Chiefs is the right place to put the blame and attention. Because the Bills offense is already better than the Chiefs offense. They're losing these game because the gap between the Bills defense and the Chiefs defense is very large. To beat the Chiefs in the playoffs the Bills brass needs to marginally improve the talent level on the defense. That means adding players that can get more pressure on the QB and a secondary that can actually cover the receivers. I'd like to get a true WR1 too but that might not matter as much.

There's no prize for 3rd place here. I think the owners would vote against the idea but if it passed and the Bills were the conference final loser I'd hope Pegula would forfeit the game.

You have a valid point but the premise behind the order is to dismantle the practice of providing these grants and awards which are part of a political patronage system that rewards political supporters of one party or both while providing little to nothing to the taxpayers. I'm not clear what products or services the government is procuring from these groups or what benefit there is from these programs to the taxpayers. For the most part this vast array of public-funded political patronage is outside the view of the voters and I suspect citizens of all political affiliations would be hard pressed to support such spending if they were aware of the amount of money that gets spent each year. I'll wager there's a lot of mid-6 figure salaries of people living off the work of the taxpayers while running these programs and basically doing nothing.

Sure Congress authorizes budgeting of funds but the Executive branch presides over the disbursement and procedures of spending. I expect these bills passed by the House and Senate do not mention each and every group and organization by name that should receive funding. As for a crisis, that word wasn't used when Biden ignored the SCOTUS ruling that the President lacks the authority to forgive student loan debt. He did it anyway while pointing a big middle finger at the court.

Joe's analysis and retrospective of the game is spot on but given how this front office and coaching staff operate I can see us having the same conversation in January 2026. Because I have no confidence they're going to do anything fundamentally different when it comes to the draft, free agency, scheme, and other aspects of the game.

I think you've identified the biggest problem. Personnel decisions at the GM level. Seems like every off season, regardless of how it ends this team has some major hole or need to fill. Our biggest competitors at this point, the Chiefs and Ravens, have superior personnel systems. I'm not clear what major gaps in personnel the Ravens or Chiefs need to fill in this years draft? The Bills still need a WR1, something we've been talking to death for forever, and a defense that needs help at all 3 levels. For starters I think Beane needs to stop trying to demonstrate his draft skills and go more with the consensus BPA or need when the Bills are on the clock. Even with all that, the Bills are fractions of a second or a play or two from beating the Chiefs in the playoffs. I think all that's due to Josh Allen. Without him, this team wins maybe 6 to 8 games. That's why I think he's better than Mahomes. While I won't dispute that Patrick is one of the all time greats he's blessed with playing for an organization that has built a solid offense and defense around him that has an effective personnel system in place to keep the team stocked with talent at almost every position on the field. Mahomes uses the talent around him to perform at a higher level while Allen compensates for the lack of it around him. The Bills might have viewed picking Worthy as a guy that can't be a #1 the Chiefs didn't care about a #1. They saw a player with a specific skill set that can be used under specific circumstances. I suspect they'll continue to use him in this way and when his rookie contract is over they'll let him walk, maybe get a compensatory pick if somebody signs him for big money, and the year before he departs they'll draft another player with similar traits to fill the roll. The good news is that even with all these problems, the Bills are right on the Chiefs ass every season. Which means just a marginal improvement in making maybe one or two better decisions is all they need. But the window won't last forever.

I'm going out on a limb here and suggest if you tush push left and they have that covered the first thing to do would be try going right. "The Process" needs to add a couple added steps and a few more decision diamonds. How about have one of the staff monitor the stadium wall during the game to get real time feedback from members of this message board. Many posters here are very smart and know football very well and can give lots of hints and advice. for some reason the staff can't "think on their feet" during the game. Here the HC figured out they should have tried something different soon after the game was over. Raise your hand if watching the game you said tush push to the right?

Moving on to a bigger and more physical front sounds like a good idea no matter the situation but that needs a change in approach from the front office and the defensive coaching staff. I'll be pleasantly surprised if they finally come to the same conclusion. Or will they stubbornly stick to their current scheme until they get it to work? Which looks like that might be never.

Then he should only cost a 5th or 6th and if it doesn't work out the cost is reasonable. His 3025 cap hit is listed at $3.77m. Otherwise, I can see it now. And if it happens I'll start myself on fire outside the stadium. Pickens goes to KC and costs the Chiefs next to nothing and has the season of his life in 2025.

His combine 40 time was 4.47 and his ball skills are good so maybe entertain moving him to big safety and bringing in some heavier and stronger LBs.

Playing the 1st place schedule and the Chiefs every year might be adding to the problem in the playoffs. I'm beginning to think it gives Reid and his staff a lot of valuable game experience in understanding and planning for what the Bills do and what weaknesses they can target. I mean did anyone see any major differences in what the Bills did vs. a couple months ago in the regular season?

We've experienced this undersized defenders craze in the not to distant past. I remember when Wade Phiiips was the HC and the Bills had the No. 1 defense in 1999 and No. 6 in 2000. A pretty physical group. Then came the Titans playoff loss, the Flutie/Johnson debate, and Wade got fired for not following Wilson's directive to fire the ST coach (I think). Then they hired Greg Williams and I think it was him that said "no fat guys" we're going with smaller, athletic players on D. It might have been him that let Pat Williams go and other defenders while Greg went on to post a 3 year record of 17-31. So Mr. Beane. Get some "fat guys". That can tie up blockers and push the pocket into the QBs face.

A couple weeks ago I was listening to WFAN in NY and they were talking about the Jets coaching search. The pro's and con's of going after an offensive guy vs. a defensive guy. Usually the callers are just there to moan and groan about one thing or another but this one caller spoke to something that resonated with me. His point was given a focus on offense its in your interest to hire an offensive head coach. Because if your offense is in the top 5 or so, your OC is always going to be a target every off season for other teams. And who wants to lose an OC every season and start over with a new guy, a potentially new approach, and go through the growing pains of all that almost every season. For the Bills this implies they're going to lose Brady, maybe next off season? I thought that was pretty insightful and its funny that the Jets being the Jets did the opposite. As for the Bills, I think they should kick McDermott upstairs to a more administrative and management position, promote Brady to HC/OC to ensure continuity during Allen's time with the Bills, and hire a DC with the best mind and record of success they can identify. Who that is I don't have a clue right now but it needs to be somebody that can work with most of the existing players because we need a re calibration or reload and not some rebuild scenario. The ST coach needs to be fired here. Is this a great idea? I don't know but its an idea.

McD is far from perfect but I lay a lot of the responsibility for the issues on the GM and his staff. If I'm being honest and objective, I need to say the Chiefs, Ravens, Eagles, Lions, and maybe Houston absent losing all their WRs during the season, and a couple other teams have more talented rosters than the Bills. If you look at this year's draft only Davis and Carter made significant contributions. If anyone wants to, we can throw Coleman into the mix with 29 receptions for 556 yards but those numbers are nothing special. You can use the excuse they're drafting at the back of the round the last 5 or 6 years but so is the competition, the Chiefs, and Ravens. And their GM and scouting departments are doing a superior job of identifying players and replenishing the roster with better talent. Everything they did was well scouted and predictable.
