Is the Flutie Curse over with?
Garranimal replied to Jerry Jabber's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
i am not a rocket surgerist, but i think he means the stats from Dude in the titans playoff game vs the stats from Flutes in the dolphin playoff game. Or perhaps we could compile their stats quarter by quarter and look for trends.....not trends edwards. -
There is no downside to cheating
Garranimal replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think the reverse could be equally as true. As mentioned, the Seahawks defensive backfield basically cheats on every play which causes the officiating to shift in their favor because no official is willing to call interference/holding/illegal use of hands on every single pass play. But the issue here is that Pete Carroll and his defensive staff are coaching to push/bend/break the rules. It is clearly a conscious decision and intended to fly in the face of the rules. Teams grow the grass on the field a little longer to slow down speedy teams, raise the temperature of the ice for the same reasons, baseball stadiums are designed for competitive advantage....these examples are not necessarily rule infractions but they skirt the spirit of honest competition. Do I think the Patriots broke a rule and should be punished? Absolutely and the rule book states the penalty is a fine...so a fine should be levied. If the league feels that any team or player has done something that effects the integrity of the league (on and off the field), then they should take action. I don't ever hear much about the fact that kickers continue to manipulate the balls for more distance......is that any different, really? But what bothers me the most is if the air pressure is so crucial and so vital to the integrity of the game, then game balls should all be the same...kickers too, prepped and controlled by the league just like the game balls are in basically every other sport in the world. -
Is Jameis Winston really worth 1st pick overall?

Well, that didn't take long for the babysitting at the pro-level to begin. -
Is Jameis Winston really worth 1st pick overall?
Garranimal replied to Cold Front's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Its a fair comparison, so if you actually compare the two....big ben had much better stats and only threw 34 total interceptions in 3 years and trended up in nearly every catagory year over year, while Winston threw 28 ints last year alone and trended decidedly downward year over year. FSU kept winning which caused everyone to overlook the actual play on the field. Then when it was time to play against elite talent, Jameis completely imploded in every way possible.....performance, poise, composure and sportsmanship. -
Corrected for accuracy. Rex is 46 and 50 as a HC.

EJ worked out with former NFL QB Steve DeBerg

See this makes sense now. I thought he was working out with CHRIS deBURGH.... -

Certainly anyone can have a field day with his off the field stuff....or completely makes excuses for it. I would be more concerned with the on the field issues that were never discussed because FSU was beating up on the weak sisters on their schedule. If you want to talk comparisons to Andrew Luck, JW threw 18 picks last season alone, while Luck threw 22 in three full years at Stanford. Statistically, Luck threw increasingly more TDs each season, JW fell off a cliff in his second year. His actual performance last year was rarely talked about because FSU kept winning. But when you look at the teams they beat (like Notre Dame, who ended up being terrible), there wasn't much competition until there was....and then they got blown out and Jameis looked average at best. Admittedly, i am lazy....but aren't there three starters in the NFL right now from NC State? -
Rule passed banning (Pats*) use of ineligible receivers
Garranimal replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
NO NO NO. Brady is the anti-christ, Hernandez is the spawn of Satan (this is likely true) but some here would draft Jameis Winston if possible. <Insert Kramer from Seinfeld double take reaction here> -

Try "ceiling" or "upside". -
Is Jameis Winston really worth 1st pick overall?
Garranimal replied to Cold Front's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
i have to agree, the ACC was better, and JW was considerably worse than the year before. The toughest defense (second toughest maybe) was Florida and he threw 4 picks in that game. And while Florida had a good defense, probably not more than 4 of those guys go on to play on Sunday and certainly not all 4 of the guys in the secondary. And in the grand scheme of things.....Matt Ryan has certainly had an above average (maybe, if you trend against all QBs, ever) career, he has also had an ELITE (almost?) set of receivers and TE. Meaning.....he might be intelligent but he ain't very smart. -

Apparently that perfect spot is often (alarmingly) occupied by a defensive back or the air behind him. But, I must agree he does throw ints effortlessly. -

I think Winston is beyond Manning. Peyton was only accused of getting a little "handsy" with a female trainer in college, what an amatuer. -
Rule passed banning (Pats*) use of ineligible receivers
Garranimal replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
And the refs had any/every opportunity to penalize the Pats on that play. That they did not is on the refs, not the Pats. -
Rule passed banning (Pats*) use of ineligible receivers
Garranimal replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Should the refs throw a pink flag for "spirit of the rules" violations? Spirit of the rule is opinion, letter of the rule is fact...which is why it is written, reviewed and approved. If the rule needs further clarification, it will be rewritten as it has been. But you can't penalize for "you know what I meant to say". -
Rule passed banning (Pats*) use of ineligible receivers
Garranimal replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Bolded - Completely agree. The difference is I interpret what took place as being astute and using the rule book as a guide to what "can be" done rather than "what can't be" done. Anyone who has ever filed a tax return using an accountant or a tax attorney has done the same exact thing! -
I don't have a single issue with any of your stats except that you fail to mention that the "With Roman Years" are also the same as "With Jim Harbaugh Years".....so the data has more than one changing/influencing variable.

Rule passed banning (Pats*) use of ineligible receivers
Garranimal replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
So in "the comeback" game against Houston, when the Bills scored after the receiver (Reed or Beebe) was ineligible for stepping out of and back in bounds, was that cheating? Should we as Bills fans and the Bills organization be labeled cheaters for a call that wasn't made correctly by the refs? Cheating (holding, pushing off, picking) happens on nearly every single play.....it is all cheating. Or should they divide the rule book in infraction severity catagories.....oh wait, they already did! For the record, Homerun Throwback was not only trickery, it was illegal! -
This video still cracks me up.....kinda like the Jameis Winston and the Wrestler one! What makes me uncomfortable is that this is the guy that our new HC was "all in" with! There is a lot to be excited about this off-season.....but also a lot to be concerned with.

Every "look at Alex Smith" comment can be countered with "look at Colin Kapernick". I don't know much about Greg Roman, but I am hesitant to hitch my wagon-load off hopes to him. In this argument, and many like it, I think a coach can look like a complete genius if he starts with a QB who is smart, reads the field and is accurate. Put any system around a guy like that (run and shoot, K-Gun, west coast, greatest show on turf, anything Brady runs) and you have a decent chance at success. But when you start out with a guy who doesn't excel in reading the field and who isn't accurate......no matter the system, the results seem to trend toward the same results.

3-20 Rex Ryan interview on WGR
Garranimal replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Did Ryan indicate which O-Lineman on the Bills was going to run the Butt-Fumble? I am guessing that it has to be (preferrably) someone with a big yet cushy ass. -
Tim Tebow Working Out With Eagles
Garranimal replied to The Real Buffalo Joe's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Do you have a single instance where Tebow has been involved in any action that demonstrates hate? The pope has very similar beliefs and makes a general habit out or promoting those beliefs, but I can't recall anyone accusing him of being hateful. -
Tim Tebow Working Out With Eagles
Garranimal replied to The Real Buffalo Joe's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
From a statistical stand-point.....measurements that change dramatically under similar conditions are significant. I know that is sooooo hard to grasp, but it really is very simple. It is no different than monitoring a process that consistently produces the same results (in this case, poor results) and then you change a variable and get a completely different result that is repeatable.... it is then significant. Your problem is that you act like I have said his 4th qtr QBR in one game is significant (that would actually be an outlier). I am not, his 4th qtr QBR for an entire season (11 games) is the stat I have mentioned and it clearly has significance. Considering that ALL QBs are graded using the same QBR parameters (whether you think it sucks or not) suggests that the evaluation does have some degree of intuitive results. Not sure that I can distill that any further. Come to think of it, since you made the comment....besides completion percentage what other statistical indicator are you referring to? YPA? YPC? TD/INT ratio? NFL passing records? Now do you want to continue coming after me specifically? -
Tim Tebow Working Out With Eagles
Garranimal replied to The Real Buffalo Joe's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I would suggest he go meet the man in person, it isn't that hard to do. Tim is neither arrogant or a fraud in any way, shape or form. I am impressed that Gug seems to know what Tebow is thinking. Don Quixote's got nothing on Gugny! http://www.foxsports.com/ufc/haymaker/how-tim-tebow-almost-made-ufc-heavyweight-brendan-schaub-cry-031715 -
Chris Borland retiring after rookie season with SF
Garranimal replied to frogger's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The reality is, I am completely on board with him making the decision that is right for him. Football is a rough sport, wrought with potential danger and typically carries a long term toll. That being said, players are paid very well (vs median incomes) to compensate for that risk. So, like military contractors who receive high(er) salaries to work in hostile environments, there is an upfront (not hidden) trade off. There is a reason that librarians and meter maids don't get 5-year, 25 million dollar contracts. But at the end of the day, it is his decision and I have no problem with his. As far as playing for free in college, i have to disagree with that statement despite pop-culture belief to the contrary. Have you ever looked into the cost of sending your child to USC or OSU. If $160k to $250k over 4 years is free, I would like to work and go to school for "free". (by the way, that number is for a normal student....it does not include all of the private tutoring, nutritionist, trainers, and future life contacts that your typical scholly football athlete receives) I simply feel that the education and opportunities given to a college athlete has real value. A guy who gets paid to play for 4 years in the minors (baseball or hockey) doesn't get near the compensation nor the advantages given to a college athlete. It isn't even a fair comparison.
