I work with people who live there and have kids in school there. It’s very real. The school board and parents are in major conflict over several topics. its a moderate bedroom community with a very extreme liberal school board. All the dems can do is pretend it’s not happening. Of course Republicans are ceasing on it… still find it fascinating all the in person voting in Virginia was red and the historic mail ins were 2-1 blue. The Republicans became so unpopular they had to resort to nominating a sleazy con artist with a populist message. W and the gulf war was probably the last time conservatism really had any influence on culture… that is working hard is honorable, honor is something that matters, family values are important, a grounded sense of self importance and that the constitution was protection from authoritarians. Meanwhile, the democrats took what used to somewhat resemble a party that stood for righteous social issues and legitimately helping poor and those in need and became the party of wealthy elites sewing cultural discord and demise along with deliberately severing upward mobility, intent on building toward a socialist authoritarian government. The pandemic really helped accelerate the process too. Aside from ww2, and prior to the American revolution I cannot think of a time one central government had this much control over American’s every day lives.
