  1. Real neat story. Robb is one of my all time favorites. Lots of NFL players in his family and ryan would be of the next generation. Robb played bigger than he was and punished his would be tacklers. It took him a long time to actually start playing as he was stashed on IR for multiple years which was common back then. He was drafted out of Millersville and seeing him at Fredonia and preseason games, I thought he might make a good pro so I felt vindicated when he eventually did so. I saw a similar style with James Conner of the Steelers coming out of Pitt but at 230+ lbs. Both grinding out the tough yards on every play, not a whole lot of dancing, and making defenders pay a price for the tackle. Being a ready, willing and able blocker made him an effective 3rd down back. He had a great over the pile leap and his skill set made him a very good goal line/short yardage back. I find it strange that I have not heard much about him all these years. I hope he has fared well but given how he played, I fear he may be a candidate for the CTE issues we have all been hearing about.
  2. NBA long had a thing about being "posterized", that you didn't want to be the photo prop in someone else's superhuman performance deemed poster worthy. I think Barr hit the trifecta, "The Pylon Dive", "The Hurdle" and The Stiff Arm" for good measure. This particular one is the best with the American flag, the field level to roof crowd backdrop, the goal post at the far end, the helpless defender and the face shot being so clear. It's almost perfect.
  3. The player has possession with his arms down and the ball tucked. The contact was initially shoulder to shoulder then slightly shoulder to helmet after the whiplash action of the initial hit. The catch was right at the stick and its a first down if the receiver is allowed to just lunge forward as he would have done if he had a little more time. Tre did everything he needed to do to prevent the first down. Receivers that leap and do not catch the ball were always the textbook definition of defenseless. I think of the Tatum hit on Darryl Stingley. In those days DBs looked to make those hits just to send a message and plant the element of fear in a WR's heart. The NFL needed to get those kinds of hits out of the game. Receivers with the ball tucked and trying to get a first down are not any kind of defenseless. Sorry to see defenders getting penalized and fined for doing their job well. Unnecessary roughness vs.necessary roughness as was stated earlier.
  4. I was most interested in the Army game later this month. The game time is still TBD so I haven't committed to it yet. Must be a TV schedule issue, maybe to do the the CBS Sports Network? They have or had the rights to service academy games in prior years.
  5. IMO, he has stayed in the league so long because of his bold style of play. Even though it often backfires, he will constantly feed the ball to the players he trusts even when he shouldn't. The players around him appreciate that because it will get them better contracts. The list is a long one of guys who produced more with Fitz pulling the trigger than otherwise. Throwing blocks, taking hits in the pocket and diving head first for extra yardage, first downs and touchdowns goes a long way in building credibility within the locker room.
  6. Improve the quality of practices? I'd think the PS QB would run the scout team. It would be tough for QB #2 to focus on both his own plays in the gameplan for the next week and learn those of the next opponents' offense well enough to do a great job with both when needed.
  7. December 14, 2014: while visiting Charlotte, my wife and I spent most of the day at the Tavern on the Tracks and watched that great win over the Packers with a bar full of relocated WNYers. Awesome place to watch a game. I can't think there could be too many Bills Backer chapters any better.
  8. Beane was not here for the 2017 draft. Repeat, Beane was not here yet when they took Zay. This is a recording..........
  9. It could be that the best talent pool to do an 0-line upgrade will become available a week from now.
  10. Prior to Ol' Miss there was lots of trouble. Once he got there, I think Hugh Freeze got to him in a good way. The stuff after was minor, imo. Seeking to protect his brother in a HS game melee, messaging a porn star, being at a dorm room poker party with marijuana is the extent of it as far as I remember. The 5 month timeline of knee injury --> surgery --> no Senior Bowl -->Combine invite rescinded--> Pro Day wrist injury --> wrist surgery was a train ride of bad news that ended with becoming Mr. Irrelevant. Since then he's done everything he needed to do. Getting that title may have helped the turnaround. I think John Elway went dumpster diving and may have found something of extreme value to his franchise. He's got top echelon arm talent, both strength (210+ ft throw at pp&k as a 15 yr old which is still their record ) and accuracy; a decisive, play making style; and a fear none attitude that mixes well with having more athleticism that what his uncle had. That package can work well for him. He may have finally matured beyond his high strung temper and disrespectful attitude toward anyone that challenges him. Maybe he has figured out that an attitude like that is a losing one that is bound to wreck his future. Authority always wins so there is no use fighting it. Chad Kelly is writing his own redemption story and one can be skeptical of it, but also should acknowledge that it might be taking place. If you know the Dirty Dozen, I think he is way more like Victor Franko than AJ Maggot which makes me think he could be a good team leader in the NFL if he is within the right structure. I doubt that he has reached his ceiling.
  11. Not sure if anyone agrees, and they only showed the replay once without any comment on the Bills broadcast but I thought Kyle was a victim of an egregious, unpenalyzed chop block. It would be a shame to have a career like his to end on a play like that.
  12. Nate Peterman ran a really fun offense at Pitt. Their upset win in Clemson and Deshaun Watson, the soon to be NCAA Champs, was epic. I think his personality fits that of a #2 more than #1. He seems to be a "walk the walk" Christian and the Bills coaches seem to think highly of him. This does not make him trash. Frank Reich had a nice career at Maryland. He came off the bench to lead them in their epic 2nd half comeback to upset the Bernie Kosar led Miami Hurricanes, the NCAA Champs from the previous season. He was a great #2 to Jim Kelly and his personality fit that role perfectly. Early in his NFL career he rarely looked good in preseason games and most fans questioned why the coaching staff thought so highly of him and believed the team would be in big trouble if he were ever called upon in a tough spot.
  13. 1) This is a rather cynical take unless you have personal dealings with him. Arrogant, self absorbed teenagers do sometimes mature into better people, especially after fate has dealt them a few band hands. You could make the case that he has behaved pretty well since he entered Ol' Miss. He may have figured out that he can't behave that way and thrive. Rebel teammates, coaches and fans seem to have his back. 2) This would have been a horrible place for him to be and try to succeed. QB politics in Denver have been rough. Multiply that by 2 if he were here. He could have a nice career anywhere else but here with no feelings of regret from me. It may have been a disaster here. Josh Allen is here so the point is moot.
  14. Over the span of 5 months leading up to the 2017 draft, Chad tore an ACL and lateral meniscus in his knee, had his combine invite rescinded in an unprecedented move by the NFL, and blew out a ligament in his throwing wrist at his "all in" Pro Day. These were epic setbacks of a Roy Hobbsian scale. I think getting the label of Mr. Irrelevant began his turnaround. He embraced the title and made it work for him and his career resurrection. Seems like he has listened to the good advice he was getting, attacked his rehab, kept his nose in the playbook and the rest of himself out-of-trouble. Throughout training camp he has been the first on the field and the last to leave. Broncos fans have noticed. There is nothing like seeing visions of losing your dream to force a reckoning. It is a future he has to work for and was no longer entitled to. Working his way to 2nd team is huge compared to where he was a little over a year ago even if the Broncos decide to bring in another vet QB. Congratulations to him. Many in WNY are watching and pulling for him.
  15. Turn over via an interception or turnover on downs, not much different in my mind. At least before the snap and the play blew up I was thinking "no matter what, do not take a sack, take a chance." Well that could have been a pick six due to how badly things were executed. It's odd to see the QB roll to the same side as the play fake. The defender did not have to make a choice on the angle to the ball and was in position to defend both the RB or the rollout. Something wasn't right from the get go.
  16. It revealed something different to me. It showed how a below average completion % and ypa can be totally unrelated to having an inherent accuracy issue. Just miss on two deep shots, throw one away, make a desperation heave on a blown up play, have two dropped and have two throws that were not matched up with the routes that were run. I did not see a QB with an inherent accuracy problem in those attempts he made. Quite the contrary.

  18. Hey Promo I see your point. I am an Oriole fan and OPACY is a top notch venue. But with ~80 home dates spread out over the six best weather months it serves an economic niche in ways that a football stadium never can. Nothing wrong with the current stadium in terms of watching a football game or the other game day rituals The renovations did improve the game day experience. The AdPro Fieldhouse is an under utilized, fan friendly, game day destination. I wonder by what measures Arrowhead has aged well by the previous statements while Rich/RW/New Era has not. New stadium = higher ticket prices = more shared revenue is the only point the NFL can see. Soaking the taxpayers and ticket buyers is not worth it for a roof and a cup holder for, at most, the 3 or 4 home dates when you might really appreciate them. The only other NFL stadium I have been to is Cleveland's. I would not trade ours for theirs strait up.
  19. "Predator" seems fitting. Freakishly large for the position but somewhat invisible too as QBs are not "seeing" him well. His range of coverage in the middle of secondary is not something that QBs have been trained to deal with. DROY looking possible for that reason alone. He could get enough pics to really standout amongst the typical DE and CB candidates.
  20. I suspect most of the "if his last name weren't Kelly" crowd are not from WNY. Because if he were from anywhere else, no one would be paying attention either. As a matter of fact, if he had stayed at Red Lion, not many would have followed his collegiate career either. But he came back, did well at SJCI, became a 4* recruit to Clemson, and got himself in one mess after another, all of which made the local news because his last name is Kelly. I did not want him on the Bills, too much politics even if he behaved himself. I do think he will have an NFL career because he can play the game at warp speed and seems to want it bad enough to keep out of trouble. When the practice games start, I think he will show exactly that. A talented and ultra competitive playmaker that will do whatever it takes to succeed. I, for one, would think poorly of a person who would sit and watch his brother get buried under a swarm of hostility because taking action would be a bad career move. He did well at Ole Miss and their fans seem to think highly of him.
  21. Don't know who Albright is but his tweet has no context. For a series? For this practice? For the entire training camp? There have been some good reports as well so i suspect it may be all about today's practice. It's tough to know until they actually play some football even if it's only the preseason type.
  22. If a RB is a rare do everything well type in all types of situations, short yardage and big play runs, a down field threat in the passing game as well as behind the LOS, can stuff a LB on a blitz pickup and has shown that they can do this for an entire 16+ game schedule, they are well worth that kind of cap space, imo. In fact, you could argue that because of the physical pounding they are exposed to and the shorter careers that go with it, they should get more than other positions. Call it a hazard bonus for their most productive years.
  23. Flash forward to some point this Fall. I can see a color guard from Troop E, Zone 3, Bath Barracks participating in the pregame ceremony. There will be a gap in the line and the PA will state the reason why. My eyes will start leaking again.
  24. He has a red pinney #6 in the photo above. I wonder what his assigned number was. As a LB I'd expect it to be in the 50's or 90's. If someone can find his number, I will donate that amount.
  25. Here's a Youtube highlights. Kid was a DIII standout. Can't help but like the way he played. Our police respond to calls for help from the public and will often encounter people having the worst day of their lives. Maybe say a thankyou to the next officer or trooper you see.
