It's tough to have it both ways. The penchant for "coach speak" after a tough loss is somewhat universally detested. I heard that criticism of Flores' comments about how they all have to be better and it's on all of them, etc. Then a coach speaks frankly about his team's shortcomings and he can criticized for that too. He could throw in a blunder or two that was on him to make it seem like he was being real.

PFF really hates Josh Allen
JESSEFEFFER replied to PirateHookerMD's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Comments from a writer slanted toward Fantasy Football should not be the same as those of graders who actually watch the plays but I suspect those will not be flattering either. As for me, I am ok with how he played for most of the nearly 70 plays he ran. -
THE ROCKPILE REVIEW - Winning the Fourth Quarter
JESSEFEFFER replied to Shaw66's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The first half turnovers were not evidence of bad QB play to me. The strip/sack/fumble was the result of a whiff by Dawkins and Josh deciding to protect himself/the ball with a stiff arm. That is instinctual, he has an effective one and has probably thinking stiff arm, pivot and escape but usng his free hand to cover the ball when he is not on the move and so vulnerable would be the better play. When going late to an underneath receiver on a hook route, a low throw is usually a safer option to get 5 yards and protects the receiver from a big hit. The ball getting tipped up instead of down is not a normal outcome. The bad snap exchange looks bad as a 4th down play, it was no different than a failed sneak. Fumble or turnover on downs is not of much consequence other than the ugly factor. It looked like Morse was going to have trouble with Q. Williams anyhow. The one tipped pass which resulted in an int is the only time Josh seemed confused after the play but the TV shot of him staring off with a dazed look was actually him looking for the replay on the Jumbotron to see why the play failed. I think the Bills D tipped 6 passes but w/o an int. They were credited with 5 pbu's but one of the tips was completed to an o-lineman which maybe means it can't be credited as a pbu. Over the years I have come to believe that what happens after a tipped ball is totally random. So that was one tipped ball by the Jets converted to an int and six by the Bills but with no turnover. That all seems rather random to me. So, at halftime, my comments on the first half were that despite the somewhat disastrous plays, the score was not a disaster, the Bills looked like the better team and that they had a good chance in the second half. -
O-line concerns alleviated...

CBS did not give good coverage on the play but I think the Feliciano false start was on Morse. It looked like Josh wanted the ball and the rest of the offense was ready to go but Morse forgot the snap count. The penalty on Philips was not covered well either but he was likely tripped or pushed into a stumbling, low hit. -

Fixing the o-line was priority #1A for Beane. It looked fixed. Nice pocket most plays, some nasty finishes, athletic movement on outside runs. The whiff by Dawkins may have been because he was gassed by the pace and number of plays. That is a thing for 300+ lb. players. The penalties were nearly nonexistant. The Jets o-line did not give Darnold the same benefit and it showed. -
Depends on what your plan for having fun is and how fast you need to exit. For instance, ECC lots have lots of green space in surrounding areas that can be used for fun and games. Parking is $25 there. The further away you are willing to be, the cheaper the price and the quicker the exit. The New Era Field House is great for pregame activities and is underutilized, imo. It's free to enter and offers plenty to do. There are usually many kid friendly activities, free group photos and Bills alumni brought in to sign autographs. I park at Bert's Bikes on Southwestern Drive for $15 and the walk through the ECC lots to my seat is about 3/4 of a mile. There is a traffic light there and I can easily head south from there. If you want to tailgate before and after then all options are ok. If you are headed north and are in a hurry you need to listen to someone else's advice.

There is a big difference from punting inside your own 20 versus punting near midfield. I'd need to see the advance metrics for NFL punters and I doubt they exist. The goal in those situations is very different. Trying to flip the field vs. avoiding a touchback while trying to pin them near the goal line . A shanked kick looks bad but they rarely get returned so they don't necessarily hurt as much as a long kick with poor hangtime down the middle of the field. Also, I'd like to know about how good of an athlete they might be. When disaster strikes can they make a tackle, retrieve a poor snap and get the punt off or run for a first down? Do they have a variety of kick options for different weather or game situations? Corey might have some upside that we have yet to see. I hope so. -
The Bills need to keep Duke Williams
JESSEFEFFER replied to transplantbillsfan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I would think that the WR position is even less likely to move. Not only do teams value their guys, they would value their guys that know their playbook and WR have more to learn. I doubt a PS WR gets any reps during the week in the 11/11 time running the plays in their teams' gameplan. -

I am making a case that saying that WRs of that type no longer have a place in the NFL and that it's been decades since they did is wrong. The trend favoring separation over catch radius is just that, a trend. Whatever type of receiver a player may be, they still need to run good routes, be strong on the ball and make the catch. As for the 9 ypc average, catching 2 balls in the endzone sort of skews that number lower, wouldn't you agree? It was mentioned by many over the last eight months that there was a distinct lack of great catches by any Bills WR last year. Josh is supposed to be historically inaccurate so where are were all the fantastic, Sports Center worthy catches last year? I do not think there would be enough of a compilation to make an even 1 minute highlight video. -

It wasn't too long ago when Buddy Nix said the Bills needed a receiver who can be open even when he wasn't. Strange, but he never succeeded in that quest. That was not in the 80's/90's. It was two years ago when the Bills signed Anquan Boldin to be that fill that role. Kelvin Benjamin was on the team last year to be that and he failed because he was not strong at the catch point, imo. -

There has to be a place in the game for a WR who is bigger and stronger on the ball and more intense that his defenders. Has to be. -

Interesting yellow splotch in SE Wyoming, Cheyenne/Laramie area. -
Not super big, I agree. He is a shade under 6'2" but seems to be 220+ which is pretty solid. I am curious about what you base the athletic and arm talent evaluations on. The lack of a combine invite gives you some cover but there is plently of other evidence to suggest otherwise. The Sports Science piece, dual threat status in the SEC, the 4X pp&K championships. He was throwing 70+ yds. as a 15 year old.

I'll bring up Jameis Winston for the counterpoint to all the white privilege talk. I think a credible allegation of rape trumps anything Chad has done (that we know of) and he still got taken #1 overall. There are a bunch of other lesser instances involving Jameis prior to and since that draft so there is a patttern of bad behaviour related to him. Imo, Chad is a better athlete than Jameis (or Jim) and he is 2 for 2 in ascending training camp rosters the last two years which is about all he could have proven in those circumstances. When he gets a chance to compete on the field, he shows well, in almost every football related situation. I do not agree about the mediocre talent and field reads. He knows where to go with the ball and his accuracy and arm are elite, not mediocre. He will attempt risky throws as those with elite arm talent are prone to do. If he ever gets a legit chance I think he'll prove that to be the case. He has rehabbed from 3 major injuries and he works hard at his craft by all accounts. The wrist tendon injury he got was liklely due to his overworking in preparation for his Pro Day. The off field stuff is unnecessarily messy and he seems to have been working at cleaning it up. We can't know now how successful he will be with that.

Colts Extend Brissett
JESSEFEFFER replied to EmotionallyUnstable's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He would have been a free agent after this year with the potential that they could head into an uncertain 2020 offseason. This is a Rob Johnson/Ryan Fitzpatrick sort of deal that does not keep them from moving on if they see fit. Reich has been talking him up all summer, calling him a top 20 QB. There is a legit scenario where this works out well for them but I would not say it's more than 50/50. -

JESSEFEFFER replied to EmotionallyUnstable's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The crappy career w/l record and lack of dynamic playmaking do not inspire confidence but I think there is a good chance that Brissett in year 4, under Frank Reich's coaching staff, looks way better than previous versions. -
My long held opinion about football at most levels is that the two most important position groups to be at least competent in are the o-line and d-backfield. The offense can't bank on anything working with a line that can't function and a defense fails when it can't get off the field enough with blown or poor coverage and missed tackles. Weakness at those position groups are problems that can't be hidden for an entire game. I keep hearing the Jets described that way.

Make eye contact, press conference body language 101. It's like Gase is trying to shade his eyes so no one can actually see them doing goofy things again.

Hand under the ball, it does not move, therefore it's a catch. Duke strong on the ball again. KB would have had it ripped out.
