Tyler Bass, kicker, might be Bills' best pick
JESSEFEFFER replied to Inigo Montoya's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
There is not much patience for developing a kicker. They have little time to win the job and they better not cost their team any wins. One option is to transition with a kickoff/long fg specialist but using 2 roster spots on kickers is not popular either. -
Josh Allen 2019 Home/Road Split

Which game was it that the pregame fireworks generator blew over? Eagles maybe? I thought it might damage the turf. The next game they had it anchored with sandbags. -
Which running back do you hope the Bills draft and why?
JESSEFEFFER replied to Logic's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Nice call. I hope this is right. I was sleeping on him because he was not top 5 most places. Since he is now a Bill, I have learned that compared to JT he breaks more tackles, is more ball secure and is a better blocker and receiver in the passing game. That's my kind of RB. So the bolded statements seems to be in the astute category. Seems like the 40 times for Moss and Epenesa counted way to much. MathBomb RAS has Zack's Flying 20 top speed as 21.9 mph and Taylor at 22.4 mph. I do like Zack's total package of skills more. -
Buffalo Draft Grades From National News
JESSEFEFFER replied to Rigotz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yes. I knew this was true of their first two picks which should be the biggest part of any grade. The author is Jake Rill whose work I don't think I have read before. Some of these evaluations seem to weigh all the picks equally and ignore the significance of the Diggs trade. Both would be a poor way to look at it, in my opinion. It's all about using draft capital to upgrade roster talent whether it happens on 4/23 or in mid March. -
Buffalo Draft Grades From National News
JESSEFEFFER replied to Rigotz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
One of the network guys (Brooks? Riddick?) called backup QB a top 30 roster spot. I think this is true. If so, spending a 5th round pick in an attempt to upgrade the spot over the next 4 years seems ok. We know Frank Reich justified his draft spot #3-57. -
I went looking for the numbers based on a gut feeling about how Josh performed at home vs. road. I think it's interesting in that he was statistically much better on the road and one might wonder what it's tied to. If he has an entire 2020 season that is as good as his 2019 road games, I think we'd be pretty happy with the progress. 1) Basically he was a road warrior. It's tough to win on the road in the NFL is an old cliche. Imo, it's very encouraging that he can lead them to big road wins so early in his career. 2) A big chunk of the difference might be the the result of the home and away games vs. NE which might tend to say that it's an aberration. 3) Some of the difference is likely due to the 4 extra windy home games at New Era that are tough on QB stats/passing games for either team.

RD 3, Pick 86: RB Zach Moss, University of Utah
JESSEFEFFER replied to SDS's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Comparing him to Jonathan Taylor he is better in pass protection, has done more as a receiver, breaks more tackles and has shown better ball security. These are qualities that sustain offense. I think we will all enjoy watching him play. -
RD 2, Pick 54: DE AJ Epenesa, University of Iowa

I like the way he attacks the ball before the hit. The impact usually displaces the QB from his spot with certainty except for that tfl on Josh where he wrapped him up and wrestled him down. -

It's like they forgot who their audience is and why we're watching on a Saturday afternoon. -
I don't know if there is a decent athletic test to simulate contact balance and vision which are way more important than straight line speed. It's tough to imagine that making tacklers miss and knocking them on their butt is a different kind of athleticism that is not reflected in other measurements.

RD 3, Pick 86: RB Zach Moss, University of Utah

Yeldon is 6' 2" and easy to tackle. Those thick legged, squatty types with a low center of gravity give DBs cause to make a business decision every time he squares them up. -

Somehow we are being messed with. Here is the screenshot I made to post. Maybe the scores of a DE vs. a DT? -

One way to assess value is to quantify what anyone is willing to pay for it. The value of Diggs = #1, #5, #6 and future #4. You made the comparison. In today's NFL WR are more valuable, you said. Well, they paid 22, 155, 207 and ~140 (2021) which is about 48.3 on the Rich Hill chart. Picks 54 and 86 are 18.0 and 8.6 on the chart, respectively. Diggs will cost ~11 million in cap space and the hypothetical rookie at 54 or 86 is less than 1.5 million. So, the cost of acquisition is no where near equal. What is the same are the reasons for doing it. Adding elite offensive play making talent for the 2020 season which is in the window of a QB on his first contract. This has been a stated priority of Beane and McDermott all off season. Scoring more points in 2020. -

I left to look at the numbers. Jackson is 42 + 12 = 54. Josh is 30 + 17 = 47. I'll take lies told about Josh Allen for $800, Alex. -
2020 NFL Draft Round 2 and 3 Discussion.
JESSEFEFFER replied to MAJBobby's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I didn't say he would be. Just that all the reasons that made spending 1, 5 and 6 along with a 4 next year to get Diggs would apply to spending a 2 or 3 on a rb in this draft. See the inbalance in what would be spent to acquire them? Pretty much "nowhere near the value." -

JESSEFEFFER replied to MAJBobby's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
There are some who are very against a RB at 2 or 3. Let me make the case in a different way. The rationale for the Stefon Diggs trade was given as filling a roster need for WR1 with an established offensive playmaking talent ready to make an immediate impact on the 2020 season. If you accept that reasoning, it would all apply to a top RB talent in this draft. Rookie RBs are known to be early contributors as pros. Without otas, rookie minicamp and with a possibly shortened training camp, the chance for a rookie to make an impact at other positions would be even more diminished, relatively speaking. They want to add offensive playmaking talent to make the biggest bang for the buck impact starting in 2020. They want to gain the lead and burn the clock to close the deal. They want another option besides Josh to be a between the tackles power runner in short yardage situations. Passing game skills are huge as well and a RB with all-around potential would be great to combine with what Singletary offers. -

Dugger is 24 and Chinn is 22. That is a big consideration when comparing prospects in any sport. -
I think you make the wrong point about Gurley. He was probably their best offensive player in 2017 and 2018 when he scored 40 tds and had almost 4000 yds from scrimmage. His knee problems at the end of 2018 really hurt their Superbowl chances. If he had shared the load more those years maybe he doesn't break down at the end. He was a huge reason why they got there and their offense hasn't been the same since.

Beane has traded up 5 times in 2 drafts.
JESSEFEFFER replied to PIZ's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Edmunds was a top 5 pick on many boards and wasn't even 20 years old yet. So, the price to get him at 16 was a chance well taken. Acquire draft capital, properly assign value and recognize when that value far exceeds the draft position. That's the process. Trust that they can manage it well. When the history of this draft is written, it will probably be forgotten that the Diggs trade was essentially a trade up. So the trend has already continued as others have said.
