Bills rushing - yards before contact
JESSEFEFFER replied to BarleyNY's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Big improvement in the running stats in the last 9 vs. the first 7. Unsettled OL, Moss with turf toe and pass heavy play calls contributed to a slow start. I'd suspect these yards before contact numbers were really bad in the first 7 games. -
Hard Knox: Dawson Knox Watch

when he is making a tough, contested catch he has shown some talent. When he has attempted catches where he is unsure of where the defenders are he has shown lapses. I think that describes a big portion of his drops. -
I have heard this angle on his play, maybe by you, to which I have replied that Josh has shown a better performance over his career in road games. This may be slanted by few more extra windy games at home but at the very least it seems to say that Josh is a road warrior and a hostile crowd does not affect him in significant way. Think Vikings, Dolphins and Cowboys road games. I will say this about your point that when things seem to be slipping away he can go batshit crazy, desperately trying to make a play but usually that's more due to game circumstances created just as much by the team performance in general as by him. The Texans playoff game is often cited but there were plenty of instances where his teammates came up less than they needed to be. Now if you are talking more of an emotional state of being vs. the actual difficulties presented by operating with the added difficulties of being overwhelmed by crowd noise, then maybe that's something to look for and I will keep an open mind on it.

By most measures, Josh had a better 2020 than Mahomes did. He is ascending as you say and has yet to show a seasonal regression in performance.although maybe we'll see it this year. Mahomes was more what he is now right out of the box in a much better offense but he has not equaled the 2018 season in his last two. When your first full year as starter is an MVP performance, it's tough to see it go up from there. If you believe in trends and projections then Josh looks to be his equal over the next decade. He is our guy and we should be happy to ride with him and see where this thing goes.

Might have something to do with JC Tretter being the NFLPA President. Just a thought. -

Visions of Kyler Murray in your brain as you typed this? Reading a little further, I see that it was. That was the image that popped into my head too when reading your post. -
I can't help but think that the reason most think so little of our RB group is that none of them are great options in Fantasy football. The Bills offense is by design one that lacks the elements to feature one RB. In Reality football these guys can and do contribute to a dynamic, pass first, QB driven offense, Moss is a great pass protector and a good target. The QB rating throwing to him was 107. Josh takes goal-to-goal carries away from both of them. While I do like what Moss brings more than Singletary, it's pretty clear that the way Devin was used at FAU means he has more work to do as a pro to fit into the offense. Both are good at breaking tackles which is an under appreciated skill, contact balance is the new scoutspeak term. The home games vs. NE and LAC showed what these guys can do when the running game is more featured in their plan. , .

Toward the end of last season I wrote some lyrics to make a sort of Bills Mafia anthem parody. It was to the tune of, well you'll figure it out. The first verse was......... Cheer for Our Forces Well a fan posted on Two Bills Drive Said the Bills have been dissed and we ought to come alive Somebody has twisted the truth, somebody has mangled some math Somebody needs to feel some mafia wrath Yeah, Bills' Mafia wrath. -

There was that bad loss to the Jets last year in week 16. That was a head scratcher. -
My 2021-22 Bills Schedule Prediction

The Bills opened 2019 with two wins in NJ. The Jets and Giants won only two combined home games through October. That was a fun start. -
Josh has performed better on the road than at home. This may be more weather related but certainly it's not supportive of a "crowd noise" problem.

Pro Football Reference and NFL.com have him for zero fumbles. What's the 1 of which you mention?
-
I like them both and was pleased with what Moss showed his rookie year. His pass blocking was superb, his catch rate was solid and he had zero fumbles. Both break tackles well and that's more important to me. I thought that the Bills allowed too much penetration on their outside runs hence my willingness to accept scheme and poor run blocking as bigger parts of the problem. Moss had turf toe and Mongo had a torn pectoral which hurt the run game in various ways. I think the running game will be better this year.

I think this is a good call. It is a need, he'll keep an eye on the players he likes and when they are close to disappearing, he'll sense the need to move up. He did it with Knox and tried to do it to get Moss but was unsuccessful and got him anyway.

I think there will be a corner at 61 that they like, maybe Melifonwu or Joseph. Bigger guys that can make plays on the ball in coverage. I just have this picture of Levi Wallace in tight coverage on Gesecki or Landry vs. Browns in 2019 but he can't quite make the play. Get us a CB that can get to the ball. I see some that are down on Melifonwu without saying why but he is a huge CB with long arms and a great vertical.

Ok, I get it now. When I hear "......the best of all time" I cringe and feel the "now wait just a second! We'll just see about that!" feeling. That's "upstart" Duke beating UNLV in the 1991 Final Four. And, to add to that, I want to say that when said "best ever" flops or is proven to be not so, I am mostly pleased. But, watching Josh play QB, I see a Roy Hobbs quality about him, his background and the way he does football his way. The American version of a Greek Hero doing things I have never seen others do. I love this stuff and he is on our team. He is our guy, for once. Harriet Bird and Memo Paris stay away.
