Matt Cassel re-signed, will be #2 QB
metzelaars_lives replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Your post makes zero sense. Zero. I didn't say anything about EJ Manuel. I said that W-L record is an overrated way to judge a QB's performance. I think Tyrod Taylor is going to have a better record this season than Matt Ryan, Cam Newton, Drew Brees, Philip Rivers and Eli Manning. That doesn't mean I think he's a better QB. I have no idea what you're talking about with respect to EJ. -

a) tell me one thing I've ever said to contradict myself. 6) OK I think he CAN be a starter in this league too. I think there's a less than 50% chance that he develops into a franchise QB- like a multiple consecutive year reliable starter for a team. Do you still think there's a better than 50% chance? What is ironic about me saying that W-L record is not always the most pertinent way to gauge a QB's performance? -

People who cite QB's W-L records as a be-all-end-all in a debate about how good a QB is are not worth debating with. -

I've never flip flopped once, nor do I have a cause. I have maintained the following things all along: 1.Going into this offseason, I thought it was less than likely that EJ developed into a franchise QB. 2. I think yes, throughout all of last offseason (which everyone forgot about last year but loves to talk about his preseason this year) and his last two games, he COMPLETELY sucked. That does not mean I necessarily wrote him off, I just disagreed with the idea presented by many, most notably OC in Buffalo, that I wasn't allowed to have an opinion on him yet. 3. I initially dismissed the coaching excuse but after seeing his improvement this preseason, I am inclined to think I may have been wrong about that. I think the previous regime may have hindered his development and I think the current one may help it. 4. He had two fair to good but much overhyped preseason games, followed by an amazing preseason game. 5. This move does not shock me. All of the "lamestream" media types who told us for weeks that EJ was a distant third in camp had no reason to lie to us. There was no anti-EJ agenda. There was an open competition between three guys. All of the EJ guys said, "hey if he can't beat out 'Meh' Cassel then the writing is on the wall." He finished third. That's it. 6. I still find it less than likely that EJ Manuel develops into a franchise QB in this league. How about you? -

Nope, never said that. -

Matt Cassel is the Bills backup QB. He's a perfectly good backup QB. In fact, I would even go so far as to say that he is a prototypical backup QB. Are the Packers counting on Scott Tolzien to take them to the promised land this season? -

Do you disagree with that statement? -

Listen guy, there were two threads concerning Cassel's release. The other one was entitled "who's gonna pick up Cassel now" or something. I posted throughout that thread. Feel free to read. I stated on numerous occasions in that very thread that I think Cassel sucks. He is not "my guy." But I think this move makes sense (see my post above). That being said, I do find this very amusing for a guy like Ryan L Billz who was all "haha good luck in the arena league Cassel" and had declared some sort of victory for EJ after Cassel was released. I will certainly admit that. -

Look Matt Cassel sucks. But there is something to be said for having a guy in the QB room who's been around the block a few times. I was surprised they were prepared to go into a season with a guy who had never started an NFL game and a guy who completely sucked the last time he played in NFL games as their only two QB's on their roster. I wouldn't even be surprised if Taylor got hurt, if they had EJ start and Cassel back him up. I just think for right now, you need a veteran presence in that room. -

Hahaha no I wasn't. I've been on here. Sorry, I had some friends in town, went to a bunch of phish shows and had my fantasy draft last night. I'm back. Anything you care to ask me? And yeah keep perpetuating this myth that I hate EJ and love Cassel. I have said that I thought EJ did enough to earn the #2 job but I would've kept Cassel as a #3, ideally at a reduced salary. In fact, thinking EJ had earned the #2 spot is the first thing I've been wrong about in quite some time. -

I don't have time to page through this entire thread but there's gotta be some gems in here, right? Are there any pages that anyone would care to recommend I check out? So the EJ guys went from being upset about him not winning the starting job, even though it was clear to many that he deserved to have won it, to getting a consolation prize in the Bills seemingly declaring that Manuel was good enough to be the lone #2 by cutting every EJ guys' arch nemesis and then throwing an internet parade by mocking him to no end, to re-signing said arch nemesis only to demote EJ to #3. The roller coaster of emotions must be unbearable for some of you. Also Ryan L Billz, I told you he would sign with someone within a week as a clear cut #2 and you insisted he would end up in the arena league. So yeah. -
Umm, fellas...Shady's healthy

I took McCoy at #16 last night myself. Pretty psyched, I went Luck, McCoy, Mike Evans, Amari Cooper, Greg Olsen, Carlos Hyde 1-6. Ten team league. Amari Cooper was kinda my guy I had to have this year. -
Dan Carpenter injury (update - put on notice)
metzelaars_lives replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
No he wasn't. Relative to era? Maybe. But it's impossible to compare kickers from 25 years ago to today. I remember when a 50+ yard field goal was a big deal. And a 40 yard field goal was far from automatic. -
Wow. I'm not sure if this is a serious post or not but it's sure full of conviction. Kujo "definitely a bust?" Hmm, not so sure about that. I sincerely hope you weren't one of the guys saying "we can't have an opinion on EJ yet, it's still way too early." So he couldn't beat out Henderson, OK. You do realize that Henderson was/is a FIRST ROUND talent who fell because of off the field issues, right? And even if he is a bust, how in God's name can you question the pick. It was a no-brainer pick at the time. In fact, it was the kind of obvious pick that past regimes passed on and made cutesy picks instead (Gronkowski/Troup, Graham/Wilson). In the last few years, we have taken the layup pick (Gilmore, Glenn, Woods and Kujo) and the Bills are better off for it. You're aware that not every pick works out, right? Mike Williams was the right pick at 4. Didn't work out. Ryan Leaf was the right pick at 2. Donte Whitner was a stretch at 8. Either way you need to relax man. The Bills are gonna be good this year.
-
Yes of course I meant as a backup as far as Cassel. And agreed completely that if Manuel has another preseason like he did this year that he'd be in line to start somewhere.
-
Really? I can't believe you think that. He was gift wrapped the starting job two years in a row without even having to beat anyone out. He's had every opportunity to prove himself. Did poor coaching contribute to his failures last year? Could be. That's an idea I've come around to a little bit.
-
Well if what you say is true, then he'll get his shot somewhere. The cream always finds a way to rise to the top.
-
Before this season he was worth a 6th round pick in a trade even at his salary. His stock couldn't possibly have gone down since then. He looked fine in camp and fine in the preseason. As long as he is willing to take a pay cut, he will be on a roster within a week.
-
Of course he gets to count the ones he already has.
-
That's hysterical. Somehow I got painted as an EJ hater because I thought/think it's less than likely that he develops into a franchise QB and now somehow I am a Cassel defender? Matt Cassel sucks. He is a backup QB in this league. But we might need one of those at some point. I just think it's hysterical how so many people on this website got/get so butt hurt at any criticism of EJ and play Twister in order to defend him but think it's funny to mock a guy to no end who has actually won games in this league, led a team to the playoffs and played in a Pro Bowl. I'll make a friendly bet with everyone on this board that EJ Manuel never throws 96 TD's in his NFL career. That's how many Matt Cassel has. So keep reveling in your EJ consolation prize that Cassel got released. And for the hundredth time, I thought EJ earned the #2 job and I really don't have that much of an issue cutting Cassel. I just wish the Bills had a little more experience in the QB room heading into this, of all, seasons.

2015 Bills vs. Last Year at this time ???
metzelaars_lives replied to CSBill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Is there a person on this board that has "every faith" in Tyrod Taylor? And also, did you know that it's OK to change your opinion on a player based on their performance? For instance, I have more faith in EJ now than I did before the preseason games. Wouldn't most people? I still think there is less than a 50% chance that he develops into a franchise QB. But his percentages have certainly gone up. You don't have to put "realists" in quotes either. If you think it's farfetched or unrealistic to have my opinion on EJ Manuel, I'm not sure what to tell you. I have the same opinion of him that most sane football fans and analysts on this planet have of him, save for about 10-15 people on this particular website. -
I wouldn't have kept Matt Cassel as my #3 if Andrew Luck was my #1 and Matt Hasselbeck was my #2. We are in a little bit of a different situation here. And I understand not keeping him because of his contract too. I guess in an ideal world, they would've negotiated his contract in half and they could've kept him. You realize when I say this that I'm talking about keeping him at the expense of a Matthew Mulligan or whoever the fifth tight end is. I sincerely hope this does not come back to bite them.
