Thread for intelligent football dicussion
metzelaars_lives replied to metzelaars_lives's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Thank you. That's all I'm trying to say. And to take it one tiny step further, I don't think Fitz is putrid enough to bring someone else in unless they're a surefire bet at being an upgrade day one. -

Huge difference- these teams were dead in the water on offense before they took over. Bills are not. The Bills would not be higher than 14th this year on offense, which last I checked they are, with either of those two guys playing QB. In fact, they'd be lower. And the Dolphins wouldn't be any better or worse with Matt Moore at QB this year. -

Do they though? Teams don't trade or otherwise make available franchise QB's. The only way we're ever getting THE GUY is the through the draft. Buddy Nix is not going to take a middle-of-the-road QB prospect just to appease the fanbase. We need three starting LB's. -

metzelaars_lives replied to metzelaars_lives's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Sadly, everyone missed the point of my thread. Let me make a few things clear: 1. RYAN FITZPATRICK IS NOT THE LONG-TERM ANSWER AT QB. I never said he was. Here's what I believe may be the case however: 2. There may be enough talent on this football team that it may not be worth taking two steps back by drafting a Ryan Tannehill/Christian Ponder/Blaine Gabbert type of QB just for the sake of drafting a QB. A middle of the first round/top of the second round QB will NOT be better than Ryan Fitzpatrick next season. And if you do draft one of those guys and he takes a year and "grooms" behind Fitzpatrick, well then, you just took a year in Spiller/Wood/Levitre/Stevie Johnson/Byrd/Dareus/Mario Williams, etc's prime where you could have instead drafted a linebacker who could start and make an impact NOW and make yourself that much closer to contending for a playoff spot, which I still believe they're not all that far away from with any sort of defense whatsoever. Most importantly however: 3. If there is a LEGIT franchise QB in the first round, you take him. Period end of story. 4. I'm just not so sure there will be. -
The Final Play in Foxborough
metzelaars_lives replied to 1B4IDie's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Precisely. The more I watch this thing, the only guy who WASN'T open besides Graham is Chandler. Stevie Johnson, Donald Jones and- I'm sorry at that point going to CJ Spiller is never a bad option, I don't care what the situation is- Spiller are all wide open. -
Bills Have Top 5 NFL Offensive Line
metzelaars_lives replied to Boludo's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You beat me to it. If you actually looked at the numbers, the Bills are the only team in the NFL to be top 5 in both pass protection and run blocking. They very well may be the best OL in the league. They were already top 5 last year, but the majority of people on this website refused to believe it. And for the guy who asked, great, we have a good OL and where has it gotten us? Well we have a middle of the road offense with Fitzpatrick as our QB and Donald Jones as our #2 WR. You think we'd score as many points as we do without the OL we have? Think again. -
The only conclusion that can be drawn

You hype up your return with this thread? I feel the same way I did after I watched Donald Trump's "major announcement" a couple weeks ago. -
Ahh look who it is. So I'm assuming we win that game with Tebow yesterday, right? He would have willed the game into a low-scoring affair with his passion and heart, right? Or if it turned out to be a QB duel after all, he would've been able to make all the throws that Fitzpatrick made, right? Either way, I'm sure we would've won. I mean, Tebow looked stellar the two times he played New England last year.

I am the OP and intelligent discussions do not involve time travel. -
I love how people on this thread are like, "Yeah that was great that Fitz got back in Spikes' face. That'll get us in the playoffs." You're talking about two totally different things. People like the guy Fitz and the emotion he showed in that moment irrespective of his play. Which was pretty damn good today. Would you rather he told Spikes, "Nice hit man?" So because you don't like his quarterback play, there is nothing he can do in life that you can't circle back to his quarterback play and critique him for that? That's like if I told the people posting that, "I'm really proud of you that you painted your garage this weekend. Awesome. Did you get laid?"

After that game, I am not 100% certain that drafting a QB in the 1st round is an absolute slam dunk, lay-up, no-brainer. I was prior to the game, but after watching Fitzpatrick not only play a pretty close to perfect game until the pick- which yes, his clutch abilities are extremely suspect- but also to tell Spikes "F*** you man," that was freaking awesome. I STILL BELIEVE that drafting a QB in the 1st round is probably the conservative thing to do, but man, if they had any kind of defense whatsoever, they win that game going away. If they do in fact draft a QB in the ist round and pass up on a stud LB, does that make them a better team next season? I think the answer to that questikon is very simple: if it's the guy you think will be the franchise guy for the next ten years, then it doesn't matter. You take him. But if not? Buddy Nix is too smart to draft a QB for the sake of drafting a QB. Just playing devil's advocate, I think there is still an argument to be made that you can wing it with Fitz for one more season and see if you can't get a new defensive coordinator, draft a Teo and see what happens. We'll see how the rest of the season plays out.

Great thread.

Disagree. Tirico is solid but Gruden is way cheesy. Not saying I wouldn't take him over Chan Gailey as a coach but as a color man, I think he's kind of ridiculous. The nicknames he comes up with for guys? I call this guy "the sheriff;" I call that guy "hit and run." Michaels and Collinsworth may in fact be the best team in any sport in my lifetime, with the possible exception of Bob Cole and Harry Neale.

OK but come on, the Bills offense is middle of the road if not a little bit above average with Donald Jones as our second receiver. We are where we are because of our defense. Please don't insinuate that Andrew Luck would be unsuccessful in a Bills uniform in 2012. And not to beat a dead horse but the Trent Edwards thing wouldn't have worked on any team in any era, ever. I don't know that Trent Edwards in his prime wins that Super Bowl that Trent Dilfer won for the Ravens.

I wouldn't. Funny you bring that up, me and my brother were having this exact same conversation this past weekend. Who's a better QB today? Probably Andy Dalton, but by a pretty slim margin. But I'd rather have the excitement that we very may well draft a real blue-chipper next year in the top ten picks than let the next 5-6 years play out before realizing that Andy Dalton is really just a slightly above average QB, which I believe he will be. Just my opinion. In fact, I believe Andy Dalton to be the classic example of drafting a QB for the sake of drafting a QB that has been alluded to on this thread. I don't want a 2nd rounder. I want a Matt Barkley or a Geno Smith, period (and please don't critique those two specific guys, I'm talking about top ten talent by the time next April hits and who is considered a top ten pick by that point may change). You're smarter than this man. The Colts have some chunky backup coach to a first year coach. The point of this thread is that Andrew Luck is freaking sick, which he is. Please don't compare him to Trent Edwards, EVER AGAIN. He would be successful this season as a rookie on every NFL team and in fact, he'd probably be even better on the Bills because we have an excellent offensive line, so don't give me that.

I remember watching Losman in a preseason game against Denver at home I believe in '04 before he got hurt and I was convinced he was gonna be sick. And yes I remember (barely) the feeling of what it was like to root for a young highly-touted QB with potential. I gotta be honest with you though, I always saw Edwards as a game manager at best. I'll disagree with you on him in fact- were you ever more excited about Edwards than you were about Fitzpatrick after the Raiders and New England games last year? The San Diego home game when the power went out MAYBE. That was the peak of Edwards' career. But he was never slinging it downfield the way Fitzpatrick was at the beginning of last year. Unfortunately, Fitz has regressed since the contract was signed.

No I'm calling you a moron for being paranoid about Obama coming to get your guns when he's never even mentioned it. And also, owning guns is not your "God given right." That is one of the stupidest thing I've ever heard in my entire life. And why would I call you a racist for owning guns? And why am I even responding to you right now? I'm hanging up on you- prank caller, prank caller. -

Racist rednecks who are still birthers and think Obama's coming for their guns voted for Obama at a 100% clip. And that's a big chunk of people right there. -

I wasn't respopnding to anything you said. In fact, I refused to even open this thread until this morning. But just based on what you said, I have a guess as to where you were going. And I will tell you that for every minority who voted for Obama mostly or even just because he's black, there are two rednecks who never graduated high school, still think he wasn't born here, probably think he's a Muslim, think he's trying to take their guns away, etc., etc. So believe me, it all balances out. Have you ever driven through a really rural part of the country with giant crosses on the side of the highway? People that have never really left the northeast don't realize just how much of this country is full of people I just described. They're the reason Romney, probably a moderate, had to cater so far to the right during the primaries. -

Last night in the presidential election, there were eight states that voted for Mitt Romney at over a 60% clip, as opposed to six for President Obama (Hawaii, Vermont, New York, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Maryland). So, using simple logic that you are presumably taught in high school (if a -> b), is it fair to deduce that if you are/were an adamant Mitt Romney supporter, you would assert that the most informed, well-researched, knowledgeable, educated voters in the country reside in Utah, Oklahoma, Wyoming, Idaho, West Virginia, Kentucky, Nebraska and Alabama? Again, legitimate question. -
Nix and Gailey Approval Poll
metzelaars_lives replied to Jerry Jabber's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You act like he had a lot of options to choose from. Nix brought in Chandler, Pears, Urbik, Rinehart and Kyle Moore all off the scrap heap. We now have one of the better offensive lines in the league thanks in large part to Nix. We're sitting at 5-3 if our defense wasn't so inexplicably god awful. You can't tell me that falls on Nix. That falls on Wannstedt. Whether they make it or not, Dareus, Williams, Sheppard, Gilmore and Glenn were all the right picks at the time. Previous regimes would've gotten cute and not drafted Cordy Glenn. There is an element of luck involved with which players pan out too. I think Nix knows he needs a franchise QB and will take one next year even if it means trading up. He has been nothing but honest and forthright with the fans and I absolutely endorse Buddy Nix on this election day. But unfortunately, I had to go with "no" on Gailey. -

Assuming a loss to the Pats.....

Is that Nix's MO? Taking running backs and cornerbacks? Let's look at the first 3 rounds of his 3 drafts w/ us, shall we? 2010: RB/DT/DE, 2011: DT/CB/LB, 2012: CB/OT/WR. I was cool with every pick of the last 2 years (at the time- I don't think it's happening for Aaron Williams or Kelvin Sheppard but everyone was psyched about both of them), but I'll never get over taking Torell Troup the pick before Rob Gronkowski. Never. And did you disagreed with them taking Gilmore this year? Are you disappointed in CJ Spiller's play?
