Is it physical or mental with the guards?

Allow me to elaborate Things weren't looking so good at the end of last year, as those two both played in 2013 under Marrone. Both players were cast offs from other teams for a reason, and the Bills didn't pick them up and they suddenly became good players. The entire time both players have been with Buffalo they were nothing more then band-aids for those positions. They might have been adequate at times in Chan Gailey's short, quick passing offense, as they were able to hold a block for 2.5 to 3 seconds. Even in the run game Spiller excelled in under Gailey didn't call for big time drive blocking, as it was mostly the RB breaking the first tackle and off to the races because the O line was so spread out in that 4-5 WR shotgun spread offense. Plus, the opposing defense was usually expecting the pass. In 2012 Defenses figured out if they stacked the box, and jammed the WR's (Stevie) at the line they could shut down Gailey's one dimensional offensive deficiencies. There is a solid reason that Gailey always passed on third and short, and why the Bills haven't been successful in getting first downs by running for years. The same can be said about the red zone offense, and the team having great trouble punching into the end zone with the run game. A very weak run blocking offensive line. Last year under Marrone the Bills were #2 in rushing, and #1 in rushing attempts, and yet couldn't get a first down rushing when needed. They were also one of the worst teams in time of possession, and 3 down and out percentage. There is a real reason the team tried to address the RT position in the 2014 NFL draft 2x with both T Cyrus Kouandjio in the 2nd and T Sheantrel Henderson in the 7th, and the OG position with Cryil Richardson in the 5th Every time the Bills played a good team like the New England Patriots the last 4 years those two would always grade in the red. What the F**K good is a player if he can't elevate his game for the teams biggest division rival? There is a solid reason the team has been 6-10 for so long, and its not always been because of the defense as last year under Pettine showed. Don't get me wrong here as even Andy Levitre excelled at pass blocking under Gailey, and he wasn't all that good at run blocking as he graded slightly in the red at RBing. Physical: This team has recently been looking to build the O line with massive players usually over 6'5'', 330 lbs with the thinking that bigger is better. Only Cujo at 322 Pears at 316, Urbik at 324 are under 330 lbs. So huge that they have difficulty in getting out of their own way. I'll take athletic over bloated masses any day. Now look at both the Dallas Cowboys & Denver Broncos lines, and nobody is over 325, as most are around 315. Dallas even has a 290 LT. These Bills don't look like they have been hitting that 1000lb blocking sled at all. Mental: Way, way to many penalties on this team, and that comes down to coaching. Then there is the problem of not being able to properly pick up stunts, physical - mental, and coaching. Bottom line: Talent can't be taught! This O line still needs an influx of talent, and better coaching. Hopefully this all gets fixed next year. -
Seriously, whats not to love about Orton so far? 3 game starts, and two wins with last min drive heroics. The guy is winning games despite the horrible play of the O line, and the bad play calls. The guy is experienced enough to read a defense, and make a play call change into a play that will actually work. Orton is making up for the Bills coaching ineptitude, and their lack of experience. Can't Hackett going pass happy with 256 pass attempts vs 175 rushes... even the Broncos have more rushing attempts 253 pass vs 189 rushes This is not EJ's fault that he is not experienced enough to know how to get himself out of trouble on the field like Orton can. I'm glad Orton is out there playing behind that almost complete crap line, and making it work. EJ fans should be rejoicing that Kyle Orton saving him from serious injury, or concussions like Trent Edwards and Kevin Kolb have suffered from. So, there is still a chance he can be developed. No matter what happens this season, just be content to know that drastic change for the good is on the horizon with new ownership.

Just take a deep breath Gabe, as some just won't ever get the point. That the Bills let Levitre go, and then tried to replace him with utter garbage for two years now!. Here it will be going on 3 off seasons later, and we still don't know if this regime would ever replace him properly. Just look at the talent the Bills have used top draft picks on only to let them leave for one reason or another or traded them away. for Byrd, Levitre, Poz, Whitner, Lynch, and over the years it goes even further in Pat Williams, Nate Clements, Antoine Winfield. The idea that the Bills tried to trade up in the 2nd round Carlos Hyde tells me that Spiller was a gonner if they make that move. Who cares how or why they left, it just diminishes the team when you let a player go and don't immediately replace them with equal talent. Jason Peters is another example, as the team pulls off a miracle to find an all pro LT out of a free agent TE. Then trades him away, and then takes years to replace him with viable talent. That's the bad news. That storied history could very be on the verge of being just that, history! A complete reversal with new ownership that doesn't need the team to make a profit is on the horizon for next year, and the years of incompetence in so many aspects should be changing. Imagine if you will, an historically bad team like Buffalo turning into playoff team like the Broncos. It all starts at the top! This is an exciting time to be a Buffalo Bills fan.

One of the reasons Bill Cowher stated he wouldn't take certain head coaching jobs was he needed to know that ownership was 100% committed to winning, and Broncos owner Pat Bowlen is every bit of that! It also helps to have Stanford Grad & SB winning QB John Elway as president of football operations to lure you to the team.
-
Yea, no kidding. They are a dime a dozen...they can be easily found in the later rounds...never draft a guard in the first round...you can always move a tackle to guard. I want to hire Marv Levy to punch Buddy Nix in the face. I think that goober is still on the payroll as an adviser, and still giving bad advice! EDIT: well, to be honest there are still some gray matter lacking individuals pushing that same agenda.... The 6-1 Dallas Cowboys are loving their first round OG, and this year have a brutal ground game. Plus, look to be protecting QB Tony Romo so much better this year. Then there are the San Diego Chargers who made the playoffs last year with their 2013 first round pick at OG. Oh, and the Colts drafted O line in the 2nd round this year because they traded away that first for Richardson, and they are doing so much better on offense this year. Oh, and just because other teams draft bad O line players in the first round doesn't mean its not smart to do so. All it means is their talent evaluators aren't very good.
-
It all starts at the top! In 2011 the Broncos hire John Elway to run the football side of the operation, and things took off from there. Man 0 man he knows his stuff. Elway hired a defensive minded HC John Fox, and Fox assembled a very talented coaching staff. They already lost their first OC in Mike McCoy to San Diego, and he is now their HC. McCoy built a playoff team in his first year! They lose Elvis Dumervil and end up getting Andre Ware. They let Decker go and bring in Sanders. Bringing in Peyton Manning in 2012, after they booted Tim Tebow. The Denver Broncos have talented people everywhere in that org, players, coaches, trainers, doctors. Hopefully this is what the Buffalo Bills will look like next year. C'mon man, it shouldn't take three off seasons to replace an average offensive guard or two. This team would be a playoff team with a top O line.

After 7 games the Bills offense still among the worst in the league. From ESPN: http://espn.go.com/blog/buffalo-bills/post/_/id/14586/stat-check-bills-offense-still-among-worst POINTS SCORED Patriots: 7th (26.7) Dolphins: 11th (24.5) Bills: 27th (19.3) Jets: tied-28th (17.3) THIRD-DOWN OFFENSE Jets: 18th (41-of-101, 40.6 percent) Patriots: 21st (40-of-102, 39.2 percent) Dolphins: 23rd (29-of-76, 38.2 percent) Bills: 25th (37-of-100, 37 percent) RED ZONE OFFENSE (based on TD percentage) Patriots: 19th (13-of-24, 54.2 percent) Dolphins: 20th (15-of-28, 53.6 percent) Bills: 28th (10-of-24, 41.7 percent) Jets: tied-30th (9-of-22, 40.9 percent) I gotta admit I love Orton and his two game last minute drive heroics, (Detroit & Minnesota) and against the Vikings it was a TD pass with one second on the clock. Alas, Kyle Orton has been sacked 13 times in 3 games, and 6 of those were in the last game at home against Minnesota. 5 came against New England at home. Alarming huh? How long does he survive this season? Now the Bills go to NY where the Jets sacked EJ 8 times last year, yikes! The Bills are finally benching LG Cyril Richardson for Kraig Urbik. Yet Pears still stays at RG, and Henderson at RT. No idea why Chis Hairston hasn't gotten a look, as he graded in the green at his last stint as starting RT. I liken Doug Marrone in keeping Nathaniel Hackett as his OC again this year to Gailey keeping George Edwards as his DC after his failed first year. This year the Bills started out running more then passing against Chicago, Miami, and winning both. Then inexplicably started throwing it 40 times a game the last 5 games, and lost 3 of 5. All this passing started against the Chargers, and nearly got EJ killed against Houston. I sure hope the Bills change their tactics back to more runs then passes against the Jets. Then perhaps Orton might just live thru the game. GO Boobie! Go Buffalo!

He was just benched for 6th round pick Zach Mettenburger. http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/9379/zach-mettenberger The thing with Buffalo they didn't even try and draft a QB in the first round since Jim Kelly, and EJ was graded a developmental QB that should have been brought along slowly. If the reason that Locker was benched was because he never attained the proper accuracy to compete in the NFL. Where does that leave EJ ?
-
Yea, I've been saying all year that he is a perfect fit to Can't Hackett's up the gut play calling with that 6'1'' 230lbs. He did a great job against Chicago in that first game, and enough so it made the Bears worry more about the run game. Alas, I have no idea why this stupido OC hasn't used him more since then. Well, perhaps its because he prefers to throw it 40 times a game.

Seriously, what does everyone expect from a 5th round draft pick, and a not very good RT moved inside to RG? When was the last time a 5th rounder became a starter, and made an impact...uh huh, thought so. Erik Pears was a Buddy Nix waiver wire pick up after his failure with FA RT Cornell Green, and Urbik was also plucked off the wiver wire around that same time. Both Pears & Urbik were always a stop gap, band-aid at best players who both worked sorta decently in that quick strike Gailey offense. Now that those players are being tasked with doing some actual real time NFL pass / run blocking things aren't looking so good. Gailey at least had the intelligence to see he needed to run a quick strike offense to offset the liability of his O line players. I still don't get why its going to take 3 off seasons to replace an average OG. Like I said, this team needs an influx of talent and coaching....and perhaps some serious oversight above the GM. Next year man, next year! -
Yea, well I was just hoping that Schwartz would make Bridgewater look like EJ did against Houston, and not need to have last second heroics from Orton to Sammy for the game winning TD with one second on the clock.
-
I don't believe I never said he never blitzes, and I do believe I did say he made the rookie QB look brilliant "at times". How about the non blitzes at times. 7:34 in the 2nd quarter, on 3rd, and 7. The Bills only rushed 4 which resulted in a completed pass for 38 yards to the Bills 18 yard line. The result of that drive was a TD. Wouldn't it make more sense to blitz on 3rd and long is all I'm saying.

The Lions ran Schwartz's "wide 9" defense in Detroit in 2013, and with not so great results, as they were 15th in points allowed, 16th in yards allowed. Now with basically the exact same players the Lions this year are #2 in points allowed, #1 in yards allowed. This year the Lions are in 4th place for sacks, and tied for 3rd with Buffalo in INT's. Quite a drastic improvement from what I see as last year the Lions were 28th in sacks with 33, 17th in INTs with 15. This year the Bills are currently 11th in total defense, 19th in pass defense, 11th in run defense. #1 in sacks with 24, #3 in INTs, #2 in tackles. The funny thing is that this year the Bills sack leader is Marcel Dareus with 7 sacks, Hughes & Williams each with 5. Last year it was Super Mario with 13, Kyle Williams with 10.5, Jerry Hughes with 10.0, Marcel Dareus with 7.5. So, it wasn't like Pettine was sending a LBer, Safety every other play. The frustration I am talking about was so clearly evident against Houston in letting Ryan Fitzpatrick back into the game in the second half by not getting enough pressure on him. The same can be said against the Chargers, and even more so against the Patriots in knowing their O line was very suspect. We all saw what Brady looked like at KC & Miami when he was rattled, and under a lot of pressure. While Mario & Hughes did each manage a sack on Brady I think most of us were expecting to see a rush like the one the Patriots had for Orton, and the 5 sacks on him. 2 sacks against Chicago* 4 sacks against Miami* 2 sacks against San Diego 3 sacks against Houston 6 sacks against Detroit* 2 sacks against New England 5 sacks against Minnesota* The teams with an asterisk are wins, and you can see a direct correlation that wins seem to come with more sacks. Besides that Schwartz had absolutely no answer for TE Rob Gronkowski, so he had coverage's slide to cover Gronk, and because of that Brady was able to light up the bills D with 4 TD's to other receivers. Those other receivers were the unexpected kind to the 2nd string & 4th string WR's, 3rd string TE. Bottom line: I know I would like to see more pressure on the QB then rushing just the front four all game, and when those front four don't get to the QB the result is the secondary getting ripped a new one. The Bills might have two top 11 draft picks at CB, but they don't play like it at times. I loved Schwartz the first few games, and now I like him less, and less after watching QB's getting so much time in the pocket to complete passes. I shudder to think what Peyton Manning is going to do to Buffalo in Denver. What he said.
-
Who on earth is Jerick McKinnon... oh yea, he is that Vikings RB who had 19 carries for 103 yards against the Bills. Meanwhile with Schwartz only rushing the front four against the Vikes it made a rookie QB look brilliant at times. The Jets RB Chris Ivory is a bulldozer, and should the Jets grow a brain to keep pounding the rock with Ivory. It might just be a very long day for Buffalo. Lets not forget that this NY Jets team gave the Broncos & Patriots all they could handle! Big Mouth Rex is 1-6, and wants to rip someone apart. On a better note Urbik will replace Richardson at LG, on a bad note Pears is still at RG. I hate these games where the Bills are supposed to win because they are playing a bad team on the road. Exactly how well did that turn out last year @ Tampa, @ Pittsburgh, @ NY Jets, and even Atlanta at home. For some reason under Marrone the team seems to "play down" to its competition. As was the case against the Minnesota Vikings. A team they should have destroyed at home, and instead almost lost to. I'm hoping the Bills stop using Sammy as a decoy, and start getting him involved in every aspect of the offense. It should be a win, but who knows with this team.
