I am still having a problem with Dick Jauron
thewildrabbit replied to DIE HARD 1967's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It wasn't Idiocy,go look at the season ticket sales the last few years that Marv levy managed to generate, what is idiocy is keeping Jauron. Though I can almost understand Ralph Wilson keeping him considering the way the economy is in its current state. There is almost enough talent on this current Bills team to win if the team can make some correct moves in the off season and change the offensive philosophy from constant shotgun to play action passing and run to set up the pass. -
I'd say yes to hire him, but I doubt he would want to get paid in Chuckie Cheese tokens the Bills would offer him

Not for nothing, but I don't blame Jauron for stacking the secondary with Tom Brady and Randy Moss in the AFC East. I know its been mentioned already but Jauron is probably still shell shocked from all the Injuries last season, the Bills actually had walkons off the street on the field at times they were so desperate. -

What I was saying is that the Bills forced the QB to throw the ball against defenses that KNEW they were going to pass, thus making it easier for the defense to defend the pass and step up the pass rush on the QB. If the Bills were to use play action passing more often it would have kept opposing defenses guessing as to what play the Bills were about use and make it more difficult to defend. -
Mike Martz and his offense

Did any of you actually read what I posted? I was stating that Martz and his system sucks and the Bills need to run to set up the pass rather then just try and throw it all over. -

If your a defensive player on the field against the Buffalo Bills and they run a shotgun formation, what are you thinking? If you think pass, you would be correct about 95% of the time as the Bills rarely handed off in the shotgun and I don't recall ever seeing them direct snap it to the RB.When the opposing defense knows exactly what your going to do it makes it much easier to defend. It's basically why Lynch did so well against the 49ers, they didn't even try to stack the box, they just dropped into pass coverage and took away the passing game. Did the Bills coaches respond by running the ball more, hell no.They didn't give the ball to Lynch but one single time in the 4th quarter in that niner game. Instead the Bills OC forced the back up QB to throw the ball into a defense stacked to stop the pass. You can blame the QB's all you want but its the Bills coaching that's lacking the talent. I'd bet that if you swapped offenses with the Patriots even up the Bills running backs would each have over 1000 yards rushing because Belichick would see he doesn't have Wes Welker and Randy Moss and some decent tight ends so he would utilize what he does have and he would pound the rock all day setting up the pass. I'll even bet that he could make JP Losman look good. -
IF the Bills were to trade the Browns for a player I would rather see the Bills go after Braylon Edwards rather then Winslow.

I'm kinda surprised nobody has posted stating they want the Bills to hire Mike Martz. That Mike Martz Ram team was known as "the greatest show on turf", but I think somewhere along the lines he had forgotten who the real catalyst was for that high powered offense. It wasn't just Kurt Warner, it wasn't just that dominant offensive line, it wasn't just Issac Bruce and Tory Holt, it was those three plus the addition of Marshall Faulk. It was Faulk who really made that offense work with a balanced running and passing game. Anyone else notice that once Martz was promoted to head coach he started moving away from running the ball and started throwing it more often? Granted the Rams were still very successful from 2000-2001 as long as Marshall Faulk was healthy. With the Bills, my take is, it isn't the QB that sucks in the Mike Martz offensive scheme, it’s the scheme and the guy calling plays. If you noticed the Bills QB's were in the shotgun formation and throwing the ball constantly this past season. That formation might work for Drew Brees, but the Bills have 2 young QB's. Not to defend Losman but the guy has been in several systems with several different play callers, no continuity whatsoever. He does still suck at this point but I think its more of the play caller's fault for putting him in situations to fail, like the SF game when Lynch had 136 yards rushing after 3 quarters and he touched the ball once in the 4th QTR, why should the 49ers even try and defend the run when they know if they drop in coverage and stop the passing game they win, they were right. So everyone blames the QB for not winning that game when in reality had the Bills used Lynch more in that 4th qtr they might have won. The shotgun play was designed to give the QB the ability to view the opposing defensive scheme while in a passing situation, like 3rd and long. Much too often this season the Bills OC would call shotgun and passing plays constantly irregardless of down and distance, even many many times in 3rd and short situations. The guy didn't start to work the running game until late in the season and even then he still would ignore it and go pass happy with the back up QB in the game. The Bills constantly in the shotgun are basically saying to opposing teams we are going to pass, try and stop us,most teams were able to. If the Bills had used play action instead it would keep the defense guessing and alleviate some of the pressure on the QB. Mike Martz was fired in St Louis, fired in Detroit and now just fired in San Francisco ... Anyone else notice a trend here? The Bills hired Steve Fairchild from St Louis who had worked under Martz for 3 years and he quit last year to become a collage HC. Good thing, because I think most Bills fans wanted him gone anyway, his offense stunk. So what do the Bills do? They promote someone from an offensive system that didn't work very well. If the Bills offense showed any progression statistically from last year to this year it’s mostly because Trent Edwards played well in a crappy system. Instead of trying to make this current Bills offensive scheme work I would really hope that the Bills switch to a ball control offense or at least a more balanced attack. Look at all the teams in the playoffs and what offensive scheme they utilize. Almost all of them have really a good rushing attack that starts with play action.

Why on earth would any team want that guy now? Jerry Jones hired a staff to watch him 24/7 and what did he do, started drinking and fought with the people that were getting paid to keep him out of trouble. He is one screw up away from being perma-banned from the NFL, and with his track record that will happen very soon. Hey,perhaps the Bills should pursue Lawrence Phillips also...

He probably hit the proverbial wall if Polian wants to get rid of him.

Although I can't stand what this team has become,a shotgun pass happy ...throw on third and one...fling it all over...forget the run... make the back up QB try and win the game offense. Turk Schonert is a rookie OC and since it looks like Jauron will keep him (because he is most likely working for peanuts) I'd hope that with any rookie that makes a mistake, the HC will sit him down and go over it so it doesn't happen again. Lord knows I can't stand that shotgun play calling bastage but some thing will definitely happen next season, either he will have learned from his mistakes and correct them and the Bills start winning games or he will continue to screw up and he will get fired, to me its a win-win situation. What really bothers me though is the fact that he was a back up QB in the league for 10 years, then another ten years as an assistant coach in the NFL,so 20 years of experience and he still doesn't know enough to not call a running play with 22 seconds on the clock and no time outs? Although I'm not happy with that call or the Jets called roll out pass,I'm simply not going to keep complaining because those screw ups were after the Bills were out of the playoff hunt and the Bills got the # 11 pick in a very talent rich draft with all the underclassmen that are declaring. I'm not saying the Bills coaching staff called those idiotic plays on purpose to lose those games and get a better position in the draft,I'm just hoping maybe they did -
From what I've read about the Jets this past year is that their OC calls the plays and Farve can audible out if needed, but mostly they stick to whats called. If you go back and watch the highlights or games you see Farve in shotgun formation as often as Trent Edwards was. The Jet fans were complaining about the OC calling a shotgun on 3 down and one and actually had Farve throw it and it went incomplete, which reminded me of the Bills at Pats where Schonert did the same thing three times.none made a first down. The Jet fans were also complaining that Jones and Washington didn't see the ball very often, sound familiar?

As much as I am disgusted by this owner for keeping Jauron and his staff there is a glimmer of hope for this team next year. First of all this team has an excellent pair of running backs in Lynch and Jackson, who were greatly underused for most of the season. Also, the team needs a dominating fullback which they didn't have. Two should be on the FA market this year in Loranzo Neal and Tony Richardson. They also need a really decent TE,they may have one in Fine already but I'd rather see them acquire someone like Bo Scaife from Tenn. They need to also address the center position because when Kris Jenkins is fully healthy,Duke Preston can't handle him,for that matter in the first Jets game 3 Bills couldn't handle him. Next they need to change up the game plans and play calling to favor a power running game, one that actually works. Take some hard looks at the counter run style of the Atlanta offense and the Raven's unbalanced line offense and steal some of their plays, they worked and helped keep opposing defenses from always going all out after the QB. The OC, Turk Schonert needs to consult with someone like Steve Mariucci who uses play charts that will greatly help in certain down and distance and give you the best play with the highest percentage for whatever situation your in. That way stupid calls like running the ball with 22 seconds left on the clock and no time outs won't happen again. When it gets close like that send in two plays, both passes, with no time outs you cannot afford to gamble trying to get the ball centered for the kicker. The Bills need to focus on a pass rushing LB or DE in this up coming draft, opposing QB's had way to much time to throw against the Bills. To be honest I can't stand the Tampa 2 defense, the only guy who can run it properly is the guy who invented it and that's Monte Kiffen.Unless the Bills can find another Bob Sanders for safety I really wish they would rethink that defense. If Jauron can understand he doesn't have Payton Manning or Drew Brees as his QB and run the ball more effectively at the beginning of the season the bills might actually win some games this year, maybe even beat Belichick if they can keep the ball away from Brady or Cassel by running it.You know, kinda the like way the NY Giants did in super bowl 25

Considering the WR plight the Seahawk's faced this past season I don't see them passing up Crabtree.

Turk Schonert started out the year with constant passing plays, mostly out of the shotgun. He rarely called PA passing plays,It wasn't until week 11 that he started using play action passing plays more often. To me it almost seemed like a contest between Brian Schottenheimer the Jets OC, Josh McDaniels the Pats OC and Schonert on who could call more shotgun plays over the course of the season. I can understand the reasoning behind the Pats calling shotgun with the better O-line and their starting RB's on IR our out for weeks. However, I don't understand Schottenheimer and Schonert calling shotgun and passing plays so often. The Jets had one of the best ground games in the AFC and relied way to often on an older QB's arm, even at the end of the season when Farve was seriously hurting he still didn't let up on the passing and work that ground game, simply foolish. Stating that I'm hoping the NY Jets hire him for the HC job, they will be as bad off as the Bills per coaching. Conversely, the Bills had two young QB's still learning under a rookie OC and rookie QB coach. Schonert didn't start utilizing the running game to set up the passing game until very late in the season, even then he still tried to make the QB's win the game. Plus the fact that in critical game situations he called the most moronic plays,Jets-Pats, most notable. Its a copy cat league and I can only hope Schonert is watching the Baltimore Ravens and the success they are having with a rookie QB mostly because they work the ground game so well to set up the passing game. That unbalanced O-line they utilize is unreal and the pounding they put on opponents is simply amazing. Opposing teams are so worn down by the 4th quarter they just don't want to tackle anyone. Schonert promised to bring back the fullback and use them more often which he didn't do enough of IMO. Again,I'm hoping the bills go after a really good FA FB like L. Neal or T. Richardson and work him like the Ravens are doing.

From what i read at PFW the highest rated senior is at 6.75 out of a grade to 9.0,thats some pretty sad draft choices all in all, and is probably why you heard this years class one of the weakest . Once you add all the underclassman that will declare because of the CBA ending and a rookie cap imposed then things change drastically.

Buffalo Bills: Everette Brown, DE, Florida State After such a hot start, who would have thought that the Bills would once again end up with the No. 11 pick? It's not a good time to be a Buffalo fan right now. One of the team's huge weaknesses this year was its lacking pass rush. Buffalo finished with 24 sacks on the year, and no player had more than four. I know Aaron Schobel missed most of the year, but they had similar problems even when he was in the lineup. http://www.walterfootball.com/draft2009.php --------------------- 11 C, Alex Mack, California Center, guard, plug him into the interior of your line and you will have a pro bowler for years to come. Mack (6' 4" 308 lbs) is one of the best centers to enter the draft in a number of years. http://www.nfldraftdog.com/Mock_Drafts/200..._mock_draft.htm ---------------------- I'd rather see the bills draft for a bigger need then tight end and go DE or C and then go hard for Tenn TE, Bo Scaife in free agency

Stats that tell the story....
thewildrabbit replied to Steve In Atlanta 2008's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The owners blew up their teams in Atlanta,Baltimore and Miami and it helped tremendously as all three are in the playoffs this season. The big difference is Miami and Atlanta is that they changed their front office structure in Thomas Dimitroff and Bill Parcells,Dimitroff was scouting director for the Patriots the year before. With the Ravens it was fairly clear that Brian Billick had lost the team with the horrid performance they displayed last year and the only change needed was head coach. The Ravens were reported to be thinking of replacing Billick the year earlier even after they had made the playoffs and went 13-3, the Ravens owner demands success. The problem with the Bills is swapping a 1.5 mil a year coach for another 1.5 mill a year coach probably won't mean an increase in wins as very few decent head coaches will work that cheaply. All three of the above teams mentioned are paying their head coaches 2x as much as Jauron is getting paid.Jauron is making less then some coordinators Also, as long as the Bills have no real GM and the owner is the acting president I don't see them improving over the past few years in any way shape or form irregardless of who is coaching the team. So the Bills are stuck with mediocrity! Just remember that in life, you get what you pay for. -

Did Kelly Retire too soon?
thewildrabbit replied to Arkady Renko's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If I recall correctly Jim Kelly wanted to keep playing somewhere other then buffalo when he wasn't going to be resigned and was looking at all sorts of teams. Marv levy talked him out of going elsewhere with the thought that he was a shoo in for the HoF and playing elsewhere would just delay his induction and / or perhaps hurt his stats for eligibility,so he retired a Buffalo Bill -
Another Jauron/Wilson column...

Ralph Wilson,does he care?
thewildrabbit replied to thewildrabbit's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I understand the reasons as to why his franchise makes money,he is floating a team in a very small market, your not telling me anything new. He is also saving a ton by not hiring a GM and keeping himself as president of the team. As for the mortgage part,if he didn't want to borrow against the team he could start by selling part of the team to Jim Kelly and the real Thurman Thomas. People who have stated that they will keep the team in Buffalo. Rather then if he suddenly dies and they cannot raise the money quickly enough and the team goes elsewhere, like LA. He could also sell the naming rights to the stadium to an outside source for millions a season, that would offset some costs to absorb bringing in new coaches, players and FO personnel. What I don't get and never will is, given the probable short window on his lifespan can you honestly tell me that he is "satisfied" with the thought that Dick Jauron and his crew are going to get this team to a super bowl and win it?
